Matchpoints opposite very cunning opps. NV vs NV you hold:

not a very inspiring collection, but you're about to be called to the most important decision of the hand.

LHO pard RHO you

1....2...4..pass

pass..4...5..pass

pass..dbl...pass..??

Pard's 2 was michaels. From what you know of RHO, he may be luring you into bidding, or he might have grossly underbid the round before.

Your choices are 5, pass and 6 = pass/correct. Your bid?

pass. I expect we will beat them and dont expect slam will make. Pards X is not "trumps" but it is "good defense and offense" with a strong hand. It basically says it is our deal.

Hello everyone

Pass. I hope to beat them and the LAW says that the tricks should not often be there.

Sometimes there are 22 tricks, however, pass goes with the odds. We have 9-10 turmps and they have at most 10 hearts.

Regards,

Robert

I don't think you can use the law at this level. I don't use the law ever but I'm sure it's much less accurate at the 5/6 level.

Thx all. I also passed at table, only to find out the full deal was:

[hv=d=w&v=n&n=saqxxxxhxdakqjxcx&w=skxxhakjxxdxxxxcx&e=sjxht9xxdcakqj9xx&s=sxxhqxxdtxxxctxxx]399|300|Scoring: MP

LHO pard RHO we

1 .. 2 .. 4 pass

pass .4 .. 5 pass

pass .. X (all pass)[/hv]

Declarer ruffed pard's A lead, finessed the J, cashed another trump and ran the clubs for 12 tricks :)

Before passing, I did a "Fought the Law" analysis and knew we probably weren't going to make 12 tricks. But perhaps passing was too much of a risk compared to the cheap insurance of bidding 6m.

I was about to say I would bid, but then the full hand was shown and now you'll just think I am resulting.

I was very close to bidding 5NT over 5H.

Perhaps the rest of you have a different idea to me of what partner's actions should mean on this auction.

hello everone

I pass, however, that decision would be made opposite what my partner would normally hold.

Doubling 5H with that example hand is 'not' my style. Not even close.

Opposite a partner that bid that way, I would tend to 'bid' higher.

I do not feel that 'pulling' the double is 'resulting' if partner is capable of making those bids with that hand.

His double suggests that he bids whenever it is his turn to call. Some players might find the pass card to be a highly unlikely choice.

Your partner has 2-3 tricks on defense and one opponent suggests a 'strange hand type'(void or double singleton perhaps?) by bidding at the five level. His guess for about 2 defensive tricks is the common result opposite most people 'who freely compete' at the five level.

Partner should pass and they can play 5H undoubled. He should have a 16+HCP hand to bid Michaels and 'bid again' in my style anyway.

Taking out cheap insurance at MPs is not often a good idea. A bottom is a bottom is a bottom. Even a shared bottom is no real prize.

At IMPs you might sometimes take out cheap insurance. Partner claimed to have the defensive values to play/defend at the 5 level. He came up short in my opinion.

Sometimes you find that strange layouts make a contract. Pass is the normal choice 'if' partner holds 'extra' defensive values.

Regards,

Robert
