What's it worth?

Okay.... the bidding has gone as shown and the maniac who bid 3N has realized the error of his ways and has called for help.

The Bidding Para-medics have been summoned. The patient's condition is critical, but not fatal.

After consultation with the Bridge Emergency Room Hotline, the paramedics recommend an immediate minor adjustment to the contract.

4.

The paramedics do not leave right away, since responder may be about to rupture a blood vessel :D

I agree that 3NT should show a solid minor suit and some outside stoppers (preferably not in spades). With only one king outside I would just rebid 3D, not 3NT. If you have discussed that this is the typical hand for this auction then you should pass, but I think that partner expects quite a bit more defense. So 4D.

Don't agree at all. That is an ad-hoc fix which will cause good 3NTs to rest in 3m.

As to the problem, I think 4 is fair. I know I have bid my hand on the previous round (even if 3NT shows at most 1 side king), but I do have one extra playing trick, and one which might very well be ruffed 1st round on defense. So I'm bidding one more for the road.

hello everyone

I used to list "Trust partner" on my Convention Card.

Solid suits are not that common. Partner is supposed to devalue his hand slightly when he has not fitting honor in your suit. He thinks that you have at least AKQxxxx of diamonds.

I think that the 3NT bid was somewhat reasonable gamble, however, a 3D bid is quite conservative.

Is the style here really that a jump to 3NT shows 'several side stoppers' in addition to a solid minor?

Before we ignore partner's double and bid 4D, perhaps we should ask ourselves 'if'

partner heard the previous bidding and 'still wanted' to double 4Cs 'in front of us?'

The paramedics might indeed be needed 'if' we pass 4CX. He thinks that you showed a seven card solid minor and a side card or two and he still freely doubled.

4Cs was bid and he choose to double 'in front of you.' That seems to be a fairly serious view that he is expressing. Unless he has a void(stiff?) in diamonds, he cannot be counting on more than one trick in diamonds and maybe a trick(or two?) on the side.

I would guess that partner has solid defensive values against 4Cs and a likely 'x' or void in diamonds. 4Ds may or may not make, 4CX is likely to go minus, perhaps even in a real bloodbath.

If you pull parnter's double when he was about to mangle the enemy 4C bid, he might just rupture a blood vessel.

Was he supposed to pass holding QJ109 of clubs plus A109x of hearts and either a stiff or void in diamonds? That is a very good defensive hand with only 7HCPs. He could have a bit more in HCP and somewhat less 'stuffing' in their suits.

When in doubt, trust your partner. You might lose your partner 'if' calling 4D is wrong.

Regards,

Robert
