MickyB
How do you play this double? I believe that it is standard for the double to be for penalties, as pard has shown the suit - same as if 3rd seat had bid 1S. My pard is advocating it being takeout - over here, 2♦ is normally forcing (GF opposite a strong NT), and the risk of being taken in by a diamond psyche seems much smaller. What do you all reckon? How might it affect other, similar auctions?
mike777
Based on all the 1h=x=2d bids I see here on BBO I much prefer to keep this in as a penalty.
awm
I thought the standard definition of 1♥-X-2♦ is non-forcing. Most convention cards I've seen have one-level bids forcing and two-level NF (else redouble). So it seems pretty reasonable to play double as penalty. I'm not convinced you really need a "takeout double" here from advancer -- just bid spades if you have them, and bid whatever you have otherwise. Guest Jlall
I don't think 2D is usually forcing, and still like penalty here.

MickyB
Yeah, think 2♦ being forcing is a regional thing, possibly connected to playing weak NT and 4 card majors. Thanks for the responses so far.
pclayton
I play it as penalty but I can see a lot of rationale for playing a double of a TWO level response as T.O., while keeping 1x - dbl - 1y - dbl as still penalty. I can't remember the last time I wanted to double 2♦ here, but have had a lof of hands with hands with 4 spades and 5 clubs where a TOx would be nice.
