How do you play this double?

Penalties. Very, very rare after I have opened 1D because I will often be better off defending 1NT; more likely after opening 1M.

The auction I have explicitly discussed more often is

1D P P 1NT

x

This is "penalties" but generally based on a good diamond suit. A balanced 18/19 count usually passes.

I expect this one to be the same.

At matchpoints it is also possible to play double as 18-19 balanced(ish), effectively inviting partner to bid on a 5-card suit to compete the partial. But you can't then double on a 1264 20-count as well.

Partner didn't GF, nor double showing an invitational hand, nor bid 2? showing a weak hand with a long suit, so what has he got? A weak balanced hand. I should think that even tho the double must be penalty oriented, (some nice hand that knows it has at least 6 tricks on defense no matter what lead) responder should pull with less than one trick to supply to the defense, no?

We had this situation last Monday:

MP's

S/NS

P-(1C)-P-P

1NT-(DBL)-2C-All Pass

My hand (South) was something like:

KJxx

Qxx

Qxx

QJx

DBL by West was showing a good hand 18-19 pts. My partner did have 6 pts and did bid 2C as 'takeout'. He wanted me to bid my longest suit. I didn't understand it like that because I think he could have REDBL'ed for that. Anyway, after my 1NT we were headed for a bad result. Playing MP's, it was just too difficult to pass 1C. I would ceratinly not do it again when VUL. Probably only when all green.

1 1NT pass pass

double

How do you play this double?

OK my 2¢ worth

1. Assuming the 1NT overcall means 15-18 (and WE are playing SAYC or 2/1)I would ONLY double if I had a hand which would have bid 1 1X 2NT(showing 18-19 I believe??)

AND after this type of auction I rely on PARTNER to play me for a STRONG NT and transfer me with a REALLY weak hand unsuitable to defend 1NTX (using whatever system we had agreed over a 'normal' 1NT opener)

penalty but there was an article in the bridge world about playing this as takeout for clubs.

Do you mean takeout of clubs (takeout for clubs would just bid 2C I'd think)?

Andy

yes meant takeout of clubs sorry.
