No more tourneys

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have stopped running tournaments. I had another unpleasant encounter this time with a private club manager and one of the members over my apparent sabotage of their pay tourney. The pay TD’s and even the free TD’s who schedule regular tournaments are hostile to me when I schedule a tournament they see as competing with theirs.

Its just not fun anymore.

Many thanks to everyone who has helped with laws and psyches and all sorts of odd questions and problems, I think I have learned a lot.

So now I’m looking for more partners....... :)

Jilly, you have to do what seems right to you about directing, but as regards the incident with the pay directors, I think you are overreacting.

You are in the right, BBO admin has made that clear. I seem to recall uday saying that if they hassled you about such a thing, to just report them.

You are a good TD and have no reason to take them seriously. Whatever they said is their problem, not yours. If they can't attract players, it's certainly not because you can. Thicken up your skin a little, and if they bother you again, tell them to stick it, and then report the conversation to BBO.

I have been hassled by both pay and free directors about having a tournament near theirs, and I just tell them to take it up with BBO and don't bother me. Then I simply don't answer any more messages.

There's a lot of satisfaction in that approach :(

I understand your reaction, and I would have done the same thing. I actually did, and so did Booze, long time ago when we decided to quit as tournament organisers. Not so much because of other directors and their opinions, but because we were fed up with bad behaviour among the players.

Kathryn, you have done great, and you have always been willing to learn. Very commendable! However, I understand that you've had it. Enough is enough when you're a volunteer and unpaid director.

Let me just say I do report these incidents to BBO and they have been faultless in their support of ‘free’ TD’s and I assume taking any action they see necessary.

And I dont want to get thick skin!

Reward the good and punish the bad so that the bullies never win. BBO will be the poorer for your decision, may you be the richer.....

hi jilly kat... i don't like the fact that you were bullied, and i like even less the seeming fact that the bully(s) are getting away with it...

anyway, i hope you change your mind... if not, we'll play more often (that should be reason enough for you to change your mind )

Sorry to read this, I enjoyed your tournaments. I agree with the others in this thread.

Too bad it would be against the rules, but if it weren't, if someone falsely accused me of scheduling tournaments to sabotage their pay tournaments, that would annoy me enough to start sabotaging them by hosting free tournaments of exactly the same format a few minutes ahead of theirs on any and all occasions... :)

I feel diminished as a BBO member to hear of this development. "Beaner", as I call her, is one of the truly great people of my life.

There aren't many folks in this world more kind, generous, and loving to humanity as K. I had the immense pleasure of staying in her home with her hubby Bill and daughter Jennifer for a few days due to a tourney in town in Vancouver (I was living on Vancouver Island at the time). Never once was I made to feel as if I was a burden or a bother - truly a magnificient time I had.

To hear of someone stating that K would sabotage an event is frankly conduct unbecoming of the accuser.

What a loss.

Sad to hear that there will be even less free tournaments. B)

I remember the introduction of BBO dollars. Most of the administrators thought the $ wouldn't have much influence. Seems like some were wrong in the long run (at the beginning it was still ok). These days you can't get a decent free tourney anymore. I understand that people like to be payed for work, but imo the TD's of free tournaments should be protected. We now see that JB is being 'harmed' by people who do the same thing but need money for it. This is unacceptable! I don't know exactly what has been said or done, but I'll probably hear about it first time I say 'peep'. :) I'd just ignore them, but I can understand your decision.

I'm saddened by this as well. I hope some day you change your mind. I will attempt to make more frequent use of the privilege of creating tournaments in the hope I can keep you posted here in the event of marked improvement.

Regrettably, I have really not had the time to host lately so it's been a while since I have run a tournament. However, that will soon change with any luck.

Thank you for your contribution to BBO.

I have thick skin, free tourneys will continue on BBO so long as I draw breath. Mind you, with my dear friend Kathryn calling it a day, the standard of Directing may suffer a serious degradation :-)

Thanks jilly, come play with me anytime.

yes i have run into that, and I think that TD's running pay tourneys doing that should be reported to abuse! I have ready all the explanations (replies) so if that has been suggested before sorry about that! Maybe you should mark those TD's down as enemies and ignore their chat if that would help.

Everyone loves bridge! the more games the merrier, just tell the guy(TD) that you'll have Justin come over in his leather jacket and break his kneecaps ;)

Next time it happes just hit the printscrn key and copy and paste it in an email and sent it to RAIN at abuse@ :)

That is not the problem. Jilly has done all that. the problem is the climate on BBO and the freemarket principle.

I had MUCH rather pay $50 per annum to BBO, keep on running free tournaments and get rid of all those greedy payed TD's.

On the dutch payed website I payed full share and edited the monthly e magazine for free, which took about 15-20 hours each month. The policy of that website (going for a broad market without doing anything for the better players- result exit march of the top players) and the VU graph drove me to BBO.

At first BBO felt like a warm bath. Than the payed tournamenst came. ACBL no fun for europeans. The others ones hardened the athmosphere. Mirjam_3 died. Gweny stopped early fun fishy. JW_NL stopped with hobsons choice, also a result of bullying by another TD. TD's meetings, always very inspiring, stopped. Now Jillybean is bullied away.

It is fortunate I speak some french so I can participate in the French tournaments who are still free, with a very open sportive and funny athmosphere.

Isn't it time either to ask value for money for the payed tournaments (no postponemenst, reviews, and so on), or to ask money for participating in tournaments, the money goes to BBO, and the people wanting to run tournaments keep doing so for love of the game and for love of the great site BBO.

I would hate to write the great site BBO used to be

Free,

Ditto. Ditto. Ditto. Ditto. Ditto times the number of raindrops in the sky pouring down on me here in Maryland. Ditto.

If I had more time I'd run Future Stars and Strata A regularly. Problem is this concept called "work" and "bills".....

Sorry about that Jilly , Some part of these woudln't happen to me because I have some private club managers into the black list so I am simply unable to hear whatever they say :(.

Hey there...

I really wish that you would reconsider your decision. Your interest in learning more about the process of directing has impressed me enormously. I wish that other TDs shared your zeal.

On a more personal level, its very important that idiots don't get rewarded for bad behaviour. I understand that getting attacked can be distasteful. However, you can always judge a person by the quality of their enemies...

regards

richard
