and would you have bid any differently to this point (assume fairly standard methods)?

No, whilst I'm quite happy to raise on 3, I try to avoid it on 3 small unless I really have no alternative. Here I have quite a straight forward alternative (2C) and besides which, I have actually quite a nice hand, a partial fit, a singleton in an unbid suit and AAKK

Obvious 3.

Even if we are going to a slam (and at this point I definitely want to keep 4 in the picture), patterning out will almost certainly help partner more than a direct cuebid.

Why 3 and not 4 (cue bid) with as trump?

As Blofeld pointed out, patterning out will help partner more than anything. I do not even think 4C is a cue, to me it would also be patterning out. IMO controls are overrated, and pattern bidding is underrated. If 4C was a cue, it would not tell partner that the KQJ of spades are very good, while the KQJ of hearts are very bad. For the same reason that splinters are very good slam tools, 3S here will help partner.

Do you know pard has 5?

No, but he might.

Are you looking for 4?

Yes, 4S, 3N, 5D, and 6D are all still in play. While he may not have 5 spades, he might, or he might have a lot of heart wastage making 3N best. Again, 3S is just to describe our hand rather than necessarily "look for a fit." The better the description of our hand is to partner, the more likely he is to get us to the right contract.

What about a slam?

Unlikely, but certainly possibile. We will need no heart wastage if one exists, and 3S will clue partner into that.

I must disagree. I would bid the hand the same way, because it is too strong for 2. But make the diamonds KQxxx and the hand is a perfect 2.

Yep, that's what I thought when I read this too.

I agree with the 3S bid and the reasons for it.
