pass...best way I know to miss a laydown grand. We could make 7, we could have no game...I don't know. Having only 3 hearts stops me from bidding, but anything could be right. It certainly feels wrong passing with about 9 points extra.

Given that at this vul the preemptor rates to have some values, estimated around 7-9 hcp, that leaves only about 8 unaccounted for points which expectancy would find divided 4/4. Think here you have to go with the averages and pass - either real right or real wrong but in the long run probably best.

4 spades but with no guarantees

could be slam hand, could have just gone from a plus to a minus.

catch 22: I'm either going to hear my P ask why I bid so much when P promised nothing, or will hear "how can you pass 4H with that moose?"

 Thank all of you for your input. It confirms that bidding on is a narrow choice. As partner, I held:

Q3

K9876

876

K109

and bid 6. The auction then turned comical when partner raised to 7. Down one.

By the way, the board was halved when the opponents declared six down one. Do you see how to play 6 to make? You hold the big hand, and a spade is led.

I vote for 4S.

I actually considered 5NT, pick a slam, but since that wasn't one of the options it must be a bad idea :).

Pass could easily be right but seems too pessimistic.

I would take 5NT as GSF actually.

With this hand I am tempted to pass but feel too strong, might bid 4 on a good day.

So many chances for a mix-up :)

4: can be taken as heart cue by pard. Not what we want because our fit for hearts is not ideal.

4NT: that should be RKCB for hearts. Possible, though not ideal. And if pard takes it "for the minors"...

5/5: who knows what pard will make of this.

5: can be taken as ask for spade control or ask for good trumps. Definitely a no-no.

5: oh-oh.. voidwood for hearts or pick-a-slam with 3-suiter?

5NT: pick-a-slam or grand slam try?

6: a shot, since pard will pass most of the time.

Better have all these meanings settled down if your partnership is steady. Opposite a casual player I'd probably try 5NT, intended as pick-a-slam and hoping pard'll understand I could have asked for his trumps with 4NT.
