uday
No. Such a feature would be, imo, misused.
hrothgar
No. Such a feature would be, imo, misused. I think that it would be useful to distinquish between two different implementations of a group chat capability: Implementation 1 would allow individuals to create a list of players and broadcast a message to everyone on this list. I share Uday's concern with this implementation, fearing that the main use would be tournament SPAM. Implementation 2 is designed as an "opt in" service. Members have the ability to create chat channels. Once a channel has been created, anyone who wants can join said channel. Equally significant, anyone can quit a channel. The channel administrator has the ability to block individuals from joining or transmitting. I think that implementation 2 is immune to most of the "abuses" common to the first system. For what its worth, implementation 2 is widely used in Massively Multiplayer Online Games like World of Warcraft and Ultima Online... With this said and done, its unclear whether the value of such a system would be worth the implementation cost...
uday
FG claims he'll support chat channels for the next official client. Assuming we both remember :) I was thinking that this would be used more to filter out unwanted channels (ex. a channel for tourney subs) than to create targeted channels but I can see a lot of upside in the latter.
