Hi,

if I recall it correctly, the proper opening

bid in Acol is 1D.

The reason: If Partner responds 1S, you dont

have a decent rebid, with the actual hand you

could bid 1NT, but take away the Ace of hearts

and you see what I mean :P

I voted for other, intending to bid 3S, on reflection

I think 3D is better.

It gets the fit across and the power, and you still have

the chance to play NT.

With kind regards

Marlowe

PS: An open issue is, how likely is it, that partner

holds 4hearts, ... do you bid diamond for heart,

when you are 4-4?

Hi,

I know, the following is another minority view, but dbl

may also be a support double in the actual situation,

at least it fits the general definition of a support,

... if you play dbl as neg., i.e. you explicitly agreed,

that dbl shows hearts, thats fine, probably even superior,

... but personnaly I dont like exceptions.

With kind regards

Marlowe

No you couldn't, not with that distribution, which is why you open 1 :)

At this point I am happy and bid 2: Fit and strong.

According to the EBU homepage this is a 1 opening, just as in SAYC and Biedermeijer. Some acolists open 1 (I think Henderson's book recomends that) but 1 is strange.

If we play Walsh I would splinter 3 but in Acol I think responder can bid diamonds before a major with something like 8/9 HCPs, which means that dbl showing hearts would be convenient. But with 15-16 balanced without a spade guard you would like to double as well.

In this case, if pard has hearts it will follow:

1 1 (1)

3 3

4

:)

Your 3 bid there can be less than 4 cards in search of the 3NT contract !?

Alain

Of course it could also be a cue bid, in which

case we missed the chance to show our spade

control.

With kind regards

Marlowe

PS: If you bid 3D, you loose the chance to play in

hearts, thats a price I am willing to pay, but not everyone

will agree.

I'm supporting diamonds, but I rather like my hand, so I'll do it with 2 rather than 3.

Does 2S really promise support on this auction? Usually that is in a situation where 3D would be preemptive, but that doesn't make much sense on this auction. Of course, that isn't to say it is the wrong call...

I think a 1D opener is best, particularly if pard would bid 1D with 4-4 in the reds - if you raise you'll lose the hearts, if you bid hearts pard will never place you with 4 diamonds.

I'm an idiot and forgot that there's a 2 call available. So I think I go with 3.

But at any rate I want to show my support now.
