pclayton
Its near the end of the session of the NAOP qualifying. You are having a really crappy game and there is some definite issues about getting past this stage. Its been heat 3 all day. You feel like a hold em player that has throw away hands as the button passes you for the 3rd time when you pick up: [hv=d=n&v=e&s=s8hakqj62dj96c743]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv] You need a little something good to happen in the last two rounds. Pass by Brian and RHO opens 1♠. Your opps this round are one of the few "B" pairs in the room that have a rather inflated opinion of their own ability. For better or worse, they are a little intimidated by Brian and yours truly. Any creative ideas?
Fluffy
Seems we wanna play 3NT ;), but how to reach.... maybe just bidding them, ,or bidding only 1NT, that sounds better, partner will raise to 3 with the correct hand
mike777
Pass is as creative as I can think of ...those that bid 3s and get to 3nt winning are too good.
Guest Jlall
4H, but only if I was really sure I needed a swing.
whereagles
I'll settle for a quiet 2♥.
cherdano
How about 3♠?

Gerben42
Not even threatened with eternal horror I would bid 1NT here. The choice is between a normal 2♥, a swingy 4♥, and a "they will bid 4♠ anyway" 5♥. At the given conditions I'll bid 5♥!
pclayton
You know, I never considered 3♠, but its an interesting call. I tried 1N. My goal on this hand is to slow 'em down. We are never outbidding them if they think I'm weak, but maybe we can buy this silly thing if they think I've got a good hand. 2♠ to my left and a slam double by pard. Not unexpected. 3♥ by me and a 4♥ raise. I buy: [hv=d=n&v=e&s=saxxh9xxxdk754ck3]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv] I get a small spade lead. Ruff a spade (yes, I couldn't resist the comment, "Sorry Brian, my spade stopper is a little weak", 2 trumps and a club up. LHO ducks club, wins the 2nd, taps me with a spade. I ruff a club and a diamond off the board, small, Jack, Queen. LHO is endplayed with QTx of diamonds. +420 for a shared top. 4♠x'd is -1. So we Q'd but we had better play better at District in December!
Gerben42
Good luck in December! ;) It was clear my bid would not work since they never do. This is why I try to leave non-standard bids to my partner. But you gave me the conditions to try for a swing and I did so.
