Do we know what system the opponents are playing?

Assuming 1 is natural, does it show 2, 3 or 4 cards?

I'm asking as a displacement activity because it possibly should affect my bid. Right now passing looks a decent possibility, with 3NT a wild alternative.

Poll options are: Pass, 1, 2, dbl, ohter.

We can eliminate 2 as we play that as michaels. We can eliminate pass as hopes of a reopening double (partner really that short in without long in 's an no one else being long in for escaple? We can elimiante double because after partner bids in all club bids will be fit and force.

So that leaves 1 and other. Well, I overcall on four card suits all the time at the one level, so for me 1 is automatic. For other, I don't mind a off-beat 1NT overcall. I wouldn't make that bid, but it probably should be in the poll.

pass for me. When they open my suit, I pretty much just pass. Later bidding 3C will show a good hand (as I was obviously too strong to bid 3C over 1C). Not THIS good of a hand, but nothings perfect. X is not penalty so that isn't an option for me. 1H is possible, but if clubs aren't going to break well I won't like a 4-3 fit. If I hit a 4-4 then we'll probably have a game, and righty could just have 3 clubs.

Pass

I do not mind 4 card overcalls, but this hand is not about . Pass for now. Good advertisement for natural overcalls when they play this method (1 on 4=4=3=2 hands)

My hope is that I will get to bid later (after, say 1 p 1 p 2 now 3) or that I will be on lead against some number of notrump.

This brings up an interesting question: at what point does your hand become to good to venture a pass? Can we expect partner to balance on Jxxx, Kxxxx, xx, xx?

I bid 1H on this hand - unless partner shows a big heart fit I will be done after this, but I don't want to risk a pass.

As an aside, I play this a jump to 3 of opener's minor as natural with a hand too good to pass - rare usage but I don't see the point in separating Michael's either, so at least I have a bid when an aggressive opener bids 1C and I'm dealt:

Axx, AJ10, xx, AKQ109x

With my regular partner, I make a power double (X showing 15+ hcp usually balanced). This is available only because we play a special defense to "short" 1 or 1 openings.

If 1 was natural (3+) or playing with a partner without this agreement, I would pass. Yes, it's possible that the auction goes 1-All pass. However, both partner and LHO are likely to make light calls with short clubs, and with so many clubs in our hand one of them is likely to be short. Even if 1 does get passed out, we don't necessarily have a game here, and we will set 1 several tricks. +300 in 1-3 could be a decent result!

Most likely I will try to come in at second turn, either bidding clubs at the lowest level (natural) or doubling a spade call for takeout (dangerous in that partner might bid , but probably worthwhile to find the hearts).

Basically agree with Ben. 2 is out (which is michael). Double bid NT (if pd responds 1 or even 2)? What if pd responds 1/2? This hand is not as good as a typical 18-count hand: half of the strength is opp's opening suit, AKQ only worth (at most) 3 tricks. Pass? a little too shy and what would you do if pd balanced with 1? 1NT or 2NT? That leave 1 as the only choice.

I play power doubles, no problem here...  Dbl!

You have no problem.... yet

Lol, I'd like to see the full hand, so I can give you the next sequence of bids. :D You may well be right, but normally we have a good followup.

I voted Double - I like to double whenever I hold 16+, but with my reg partner(s) would pass - we play this as showing 12+
