Meaning of 5 in an agreed major?

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

What is the common sense meaning of 5 in a major in the following situations?

a.)

1 pass 4 pass

5?

b.)

1 pass 2NT pass

5?

c.)

1m pass 1 pass

5?

In all cases -> Partner shall bid 6 with good spades (2 of 3 honours)?

d.)

In a contested auction:

1 (4) 5?

Partner shall bid 6 with a -control?

e.)

1 (2x) 3x* (pass)

5?

*inviting(+) with support

Are there other situations where 5 in a major trumpsuit has a conventional meaning?

Ty!

Caren

a.)

1♠ pass 4♠ pass

5♠?

As you say, asks partner to bid 6 with 2 out of top 3 honors, 7 with all 3 (seems impossible here).

b.)

1♠ pass 2NT pass

5♠?

Same, also very rare.

c.)

1m pass 1♥ pass

5♥?

Same.

d.)

In a contested auction:

1♠ (4♥) 5♠?

Partner shall bid 6 with a ♥-control?

Partner should BID with a heart control. (don't bid 6S with 1st round control)

e.)

1♠ (2x) 3x* (pass)

5♠?

Same as (d). Shows a very good hand with probably two small in suit X.

Sometimes 5M is just an invite. Imagine an auction like 1H-1S-2D-3C-3H. Suppose responder has slam interest with 3 hearts but doesn't want to bid blackwood. 5H seems the only way to show this. If you think that this is an ugly auction, search for "new suit invitational" in this forum. :P :)

I always thought that 5NT was the GSF used after trump agreement and confirmation that all suits were 1st round controlled. It asks for 7 with 2 of the top 3 honours in the trump suit, otherwise just 6.

For the rest, aren't they often contextual, in the sense of "I want to be in slam, have a problem and if you (should) know what it is and have the answer, then please bid 6." Be it trump quality, control of opp's suit or of an unbid suit etc.

Sorry, Hannie, I don't understand that, especially the sentence in brackets:

d.)

In a contested auction:

1 (4) 5?

Partner shall bid 6 with a -control?

Partner should BID with a heart control. (don't bid 6S with 1st round control)

Maybe the difference is that you are on the way to 6 with 5 in the major, and on the way to a grand with 5NT...??

That was why I asked: how can I know what partner wants/needs? In this case I do not like to rely on intuition

A) - Bizzaro world. You have ten card suit. This bid appears to ask for slam with two of top three, but with Axxxx you should have a play unless suit is 3-0. So I would say this is bid slam with Axxxx or KQxxx. If opener needed just Ace or King (say he had the queen), then undoubtedly blackwood would have solved the problem.

B) - Bid on with two of top three spades (not sure of 10 card fit, so two honors needed.

C) and D) - Bid on with control in their suit.

42,

Partner asks you to bid slam with a heart control, suggesting that she has all suits under control but two quick losers in hearts. So if you have a void in hearts you are likely to make 7. I have no specific agreement about what to do but I'm sure good pairs do. I would cuebid 6H with a void, bid anything but 6S with an ace. 5S should show either the king or a singleton.

The difference between intuition and deduction. The context provides the clues as to what the only (or most likely) meaning of the bid can be.

btw sense is anything but common....lol
