Double again

Does it matter if it was

(1) 1 (1NT) P

(2) D

No, still take-out. A good rule of thumb is:

A double is for take-out if partner is a passed hand (or didn't bid yet), there are at least 2 unbid suits, and the level is not beyond 4.

Takeout. Generally five hearts, four spades, but could be five/six hearts, three spades. Also clealry a tolerance for clubs. I am somewhat less sure about the "extras" than Roland, but surely this is not minimum... but there is a difference in my mind between "extras" and "not minimum"....so sound minimum or better.

I don't entirely agree with Roland.

1D 1H 1NT P 2D x is take-out, yes, and typical shapes would be 4513 / 3613/ 3523.

However, I think 1D 1H 1NT P P x just shows a good hand, it doesn't have to be take-out shape. I would generally expect partner to pass and lead a heart unless he has suprising distribution or (possibly) extra values.

I play a style where something like Ax AKQxxx Kxx xx would overcall 1H on the first round. I'd double 1NT on that hand, and not be pleased if partner bid 2S.

I don't really expect to defend 1NTx because someone is likely to bid diamonds, but it's nice to get my strength over.

I wouldn't double with that hand, simply rebid hearts. Then double is always free to show take-out shape.
