1S. I like to bid 2S sometimes with heavy hands in third seat, but this one offers too much game potential and is also risky to open 2S (given the poor suit) when you don't have to.

Interesting. Opposite what some of my partner's expect for a vul vs not weak 2, I am rather worried about them driving to game when it is hopeless. (I am exaggerating, but for me 2 is definitely not an underbid.)

I can't vote, you don't have enough options. I estimate I would open

1S 80% of the time

2S 18% of the time

Other (3S? Pass? 1H? 1NT?) 2% of the time

depending on my mood, the opposition, the general standard of event, my score so far....

Agree with Frances on this. Might bid either 1 or 2 depending on who am I playing, who is my partner, what heat I'm in, what heat partner is in, etc.

However I would more often than not open 2. I'm not worried about missing game since 2 at this vuln shows a good hand, 2 top honors and something on the side as well so partner can ask for singleton with maximum fitting passes.

I'm with Frances and Gerben on this one. For one thing, always bidding the same thing on this sort of hand is likely to make me too predictable for the opponents. I think I'd probably open 2 a little over half the time.

1 in first, second, third, fourth seat. This is a one spade opening hand, it is even better than minimum 1 opening, and opposite a fit/maxium pass, I can envision game. Opposite less (fit or otherwise), I hope my heart legnth/values and good spade suit will keep them from game.

Give partner something as pathetic as Kxxx Qxxx T9xxx x and you have good play for game, and clearly he can have more.

I'd open 2S in 4th seat the majority of the time. It shows a hand like this.

p.s. give partner something as pathetic as Kxxx Qxx 109xxx x (only 13 cards) and it doesn't matter if you open 1S, 2S or 3S you will reach game.

Predictable given that you have a partner is not a bad thing. He needs to know what to expect too.

A couple of years ago I experimented with opening 2M in 3rd seat on a very wide variety of hands: from 5332 to 6421 shape, from 3 points to 12. Sometimes the extra pressure did give us a good score, but more often (in my experience) we got bad scores because partner could not know whether to pass, raise or double when they competed. We would end up in 3S doubled on bad 5-3 fits or let them play in 3m undoubled when it was really our hand. And sometimes just playing in 2S undoubled was bad, let's not forget those hands.

I still open with 5431 shapes when white but when I'm vulnerable I always have a decent 6-carder. I never have a real opening hand (like here). The opponents probably have an easy time against old predictable me. Hopefully so does partner.

I posted this hand because I stopped opening weak 2's on hands like this about 5 years ago. Yesterday, it just felt right and tried it for 'old times sake' :P .

Pard had: Kxxx, xx, Txxx, AQx and we defended 4, barely beating it a trick when declarer misguessed trump (dummy had ATxx, she had Qxxx) reasonably playing my pard for the K.

4 is on a heart guess only, which you will get right on the auction. No one got to game amazingly - the +170's were ties for top. +50 was a 3/12 for us :) .
