junyi_zhu
white/red imps. KQxx AQJTxxx x J. 1C to your right. Do you blast or use science? If you overcall 1H here is what happens in hidden text (don't cheat!) partner bids 2 forcing diamonds and the opps are silent. What now? I like 1H, when white vs red, my 4H is usually much lighter. Of course, you can have some science to play 4C to show a strong 4H or 4S.
whereagles
Always ask yourself - what and whom are you preempting? We have the spades, so I'm not worried about the opps finding their fit there. pclayton, spades isn't the only suit that matters. Bidding a prosaic 1♥ gives opps plenty of room to find out of a minor suit sacrifice. If you bid 4♥.. 1. LHO might be tempted to try 4♠ and get doubled.2. LHO might bid 4NT hoping it's "for the minors" and end up in the wrong minor, doubled.3. LHO might chicken out and sell to 4♥ when 5m was a good save. Or even a make! You see, a lot of things might happen, and I consider 1♥ more "masterminding" than 4♥. Bidding 1♥ is gambling opps won't come together. Bidding 4♥ runs only one risk: we miss a spade slam. TheoKole
I double showing both majors then bid 4 hearts if partner doesn't show some signs of life. If LHO bids some number of ♣ or ♦ I will compete up until 4 hearts, bidding 3 ♥ first, to discribe my hand to partner, so that he can judge whether to double or not. I they bid 3 ♠ or 4 ♠ I will smack it with a X. Cheers. ;) Theo

Al_U_Card
How will pard feel about not being consulted? White vs Red, he could easily take a few bids to get you to the right strain and level. They won't preempt, but their defense will get more accurate the more you blab about to end in 4H anyway. If your methods for overcalls are good (even Michael's types) then start slow. If not, then blast away with apologies in hand.
