How many clubs?

5 is obvious Matt :)

No, only joking. I'd probably compete at the 3-level like everyone else. But perhaps a more interesting question to ask is: "Please rate the bids 3, 4 and 5 out of 10. Now do the same if their overcall was described as (a ) weak, (b ) strong."

I am fond of pass on this hand. The heart king is not the hcp I desire when trying to declarer, and 5332 is well, not all that intriquing. Not that I object violently to 3, but pass seems just about right. And when partner balances, 3 will be fine.

Now if 2 was "strong", I would be bidding.

3C for me too, wonder what other call you had in mind Echo. Bit late to psyche on this hand, you already forgot to open 1S.

This was a hand part of a ruling and an appeal.

I bid the hand in the "knowledge" than RHO had a strong 2. I personally believe that there is a case for making a preemptive 5 over a strong 2, but not over any other strength overcall.

As for psyching, I think you have my online play for fun confused with my f2f play. ;) Actually, I never psyche in f2f unless I think my opponents should be able to handle it.

Echo, could you explain how and why this hand caused an appeal?

I didn't think that that you often psych when playing f2f, I was just kidding. However, your online style shows that you do like action at the table. Regarding your comment that you only psych if your opponents are able to handle it, I remember a hand you posted this summer where you or your partner made a bunny bashing bid of 3NT (one of the hands from Reno?). Seems to contradict this statement...

(not that I think that there is anything wrong with trying to beat weaker pairs as much as you can, and by any legal/ethical method available)

Reno was a sectional. Not sure I think there is such a thing as bunny bashing in a tournament. Also we were supposedly playing in the A section.

As per this hand, here was the full deal.

P - P - 1 - 2*

5 - All Pass[/hv]

* Explained as Strong 2 in hearts

After the auction, East says "should I say now that my bid was not strong?" Director called and West warned about UI on defense. Table result: 5-1.

Director called back at the end of the auction about the MI. Asks South what he would bid over an intermediate jump overcall and says 3. West says she would bid 3 over 3 and North 4 over 3. East is unsure what she would bid over 4. By the way, EW's cc says "ATV" which we use as according to vulnerability. EW say they recently switched from Strong to Intermediate (11-15 hcp). Director's ruling: 4 NS making. EW appeal.

During the appeal, East says she would bid 4 over 4 (note that she has now seen all the hands). Appeals committee agrees, but rules NS would compete to 5. Ruling: 5-1.

Note that both 4 and 5-1 were good scores for NS, obviously the former being better than the latter.
