Paying for Gibs

Recommended Posts

We'll see; we make a small habit of selling other people's stuff (for instance the Bridge Master deals, etc ) and taking a sales commission.

Let's hope it works to enough of an extent that the owners of GIB don't yank their product from the site :) I can think of a few things I could do on the server side with cheap GIBs...

Do you think there is any chance people will buy that ?

My guess is this wont work, and BBO found the wrong spot to look for money.

Will see if im right soon.

Got anything else you want to complain about? :-)

GIB has been remarkably well recieved, often with 100 tables using them, and routinely in the 60's or 70's tables at the same time. Right now there are 140 tables with one or more GIB's. And remember, the GIB tables you might see don't include the invisible ones.... (this total incuded all).

Will I pay for GIB? Probably not. But when I have only 15 mintues, a quick two boards with GIB is kind of fun. I hope it makes money for both Matt G and Fred G.

I don't see how you can reasonably speculate about this unless you know what the price will be.

I suspect there exists a price point at which the average member would feel it worth while to pay for GIB.

The prices we will start with are not firmly established yet and they could easily fall if the initial response is poor (we would then credit people who paid at the higher rate).

Gas is rather expensive these days ... :)

I'm scared as hell of Iran getting Nukes. :)

My order for Kelseys "Logical Bridge Play" by Hugh Kelsey wan cancelled by AMAZON after I've been waiting for 3 1/2 months! Yup thats right, I placed an order on May 28th and they just canceled it, and stiffed me out of a promotional certificate for $9.28. I asked them for a credit on another book instead and they said no. :)

While I personally don't really like the GIBs, I think its a terrific idea for BBO. It may turn out to be a big hit, or not. You can't tell without trying. No risk no gain, so I think it makes sense for BBO to try them out.

The bots on Yahoo are shall we say "not quite up to par", so there must be a market for better bots.

Perhaps its just me, but I didn't enjoy bidding with or playing with my GIB partner. They did erratic things. Also I got a bit annoyed at their occasional slow speed and set them to quickest response time. Maybe I need to set them to slow, and they will play better.

There are numerous free double-dummy solvers that could be used on the server side without the expense of a GIB license.

Which ones? I only found one the last time i looked ( cd-something )

The server would also like to have access to a decent single dummy engine

The Gibs are a hoot, and I might very well donate a little cash to keep them in oil or whatever they run on.

Last time I played S with Gibs N,E, and W I was running up a good score until I stretched for 4S, got dbld and my trusting Gib redbl. Dn 1. Next hand the opposing Gibs bid game, partner Gib dbld, opposing Gibs redbld and made. They may or not be good but they sure ain't chicken.

I plan to write in a Gib for president in 2008. And a Gib for VP. And Senator.

As a GIB owner and fairly regular user of stand alone GIB, the main thing I like nowadays is to compare against top class players eg to play Cap Gemini events where GIB will score you against the world class field. In BBO I might even pay to compare against the field of human players but NOT, as we have at present, against other Gibs. I think there is a much better chance of getting revenue if a way can be found to compare GIB score against the human field but not allow the GIB tables to affect those scores.

The other area where GIB and other bot programs are useful is to practice new systems. If BBO GIB were programmed to know systems like Precision, Polish Club etc, I think you would get some takers - but probably not enough to justify the effort involved.

Hi all,

At the risk of pushing the price higher, I will probably pay for the GIBs:

1) practicing against interference in the bidding room

2) at work when you have to leave for a while in the middle of the hand

3) GIB interface on the actual program, which I own, sucks compared to BBO

Thanks,

Dan

If I didn't actually own GIB for my PC I would probably pay for it.

question is would GIB pay to play with you?

Doubtful. It has a good partnership with it's twin. They never have any misunderstandings. I cannot live up to that.

Indeed I think they should be hit heavily with penalties for CPUs. This "Likely stop in ..." bit isn't fooling me anymore!

Pulling partner's double at high levels is one of GIB's many

idiosyncratic features

I don't have much experience with GIB, but based on my experience with Jack I guess it's because it has too much confidence in its opponents. Playing in the main room, you often get the opportunity to double some insane contracts. Maybe GIB doesn't appreciate that: when everybody bids to the 5-level it assumes that everybody actually has 8500-shapes.

Just a thought.

I think one large part is that people don't want to put GIB at the slowest setting.

Not going to happen. This is more complicated than you think! Its program DOES play Moscito though.
