puidedac
lets say for the past 8 months u had a decent connection to BBO.but the good times had past and now your ISP has a problem.first was only an hour a day then it became worse.now u start playing a turney and u so slow u ask to be replaced.later on you play and is just fine. then next couple of days happen to be a weekend when u try to play a bit more and u have few surprizes with your connection. but all the time u ask the TD to replace you when u realize what a pain is to be so slow. ok ideal would be u dont play but after u had few hours an ok connection is all about how lucky u are. should you have your turney rights suspended since u did not finish a number of turneys? uday
Yes. It does not matter why you abandon tourneys. What matters is that you do. As an example: someone, with the best of intentions and the worst of connections abandons every single tourney they play in. They do this every day for a year. At some point, we're doing the field a disservice by allowing this person to register Thus, imo, it is not a question of whether to suspend, only a question of when. inquiry
Uday is right. The reason the privilege to play in tourneys is suspended for people who disconnect too often is not to punish those who do, but rather to save the burden they cause to the other players (while waiting for a replacement), and the director (while finding a replacement). This is handled automatically by the software, without bias. If you have a bad connection, you can try to play in them if you like. Eventually the Software will suspend you for seven days. After that you can try again... hopefuly in the meanwhile, you will have gotten a better connection or your connection will have improved. luke warm
i used to have an excellent dsl connection, rarely if ever did it go down... now, since the hurricane, it's rare to even get online (except at work, shhhh)... we'll just have to wait for bellsouth to get around to fixing everything that's broken i guess... anyway, i wouldn't even attempt to play a tourney right now... pigpenz
and nothing worse than having a parnter that keeps going back and forth from red dot to playing to disconnection
shoeless
I would never disconnect a person who is obviously in and out of a state of frozeness who manages to ask at some point "Am I here" but then not another peep from them for some time. In all seriousness, I will wait forever for that person. And if you have to ask why then you likely wouldn't understand the answer.

We're talking about online bridge here, not some serious moral quandary in which one may agonize over whether a utilitarian approach is justified. Kicking out someone, as inquiry noted, is not punitive; it's remedial (purpose is not to punish someone with a bad connection, but to fix the situation for all others in the tournament or at the table, in the case of MBC). If I have a connection problem, intermittent or otherwise, and can't fix it, I WANT to be kicked out. For the benefit of others. I don't want my p or opps to have to deal with having to think and play too quickly or request adjustments on multiple boards because it takes me extra time to bid and play because of intermittent "redness". If I'm connected enough to send a message to the TD, of course I will do so.

I guess you only run unclocked tournaments for people with lots of time :P If its an indy I say sub with abandon, in pairs take much more care.
