Hello everyone

Is the 'end' of the 2D opening correct? "...with weak !cs"

Should this read something like, 'three suiter with 0-1 diamonds.' ?

I have played a lot of Precision and I would rather open 2D with 4315 or 3415 than than open 2Cs, unless in 3rd seat and just opening for a club 'directing lead.'

The 2D bid shows almost my whole hand in one bid. While a 2C opening may or may not be able to describe their 4M and 5C hand type 'if' the auction allows.

2C-(2D) overcall or 2C-(3D) overcall and partner needs to guess without much information.

2D- ? and partner has a very good idea of your general hand type.

The general trend is also towards opening 2Cs with 6+ Cs. Unless the 1D bid requires more than 2+ to open the bidding. I use a 2+ opening to allow my 2C opening to show 6+Cs.

Opening 2+ Ds also allows a 1D opening with 4135, 1435 2425 4225 hand types.

Opening 2Cs with weak clubs is not a good idea in general.

AJxx Qx Ax Jxxxx or Kxxx x AKx Qxxxx are not good 2C openers.

Robert

Robert: I think most people here would agree with you, but 2 with 5/4M or 6 is still what most people would assume if partner in an indy just says "Vanilla Precision, please". FWIW I agree with you.

Gerben: It should be 12+ through 15. (Whatever the "+" means  ) Personally I like opening four-card majors in 3rd/4th seat with 11-12 HCPs but we have not discussed this.

Hello everyone

The list appears to read 13-15HCP=1NT. That is what I would have guessed Vanilla Precision would play. I learned Precision from the early red cover hardback(70s ?) which used 13-15 1NT and 11-12HCP opened 1D and rebid 1NT.

Many modern versions of Precision use a 14-16 or 15-17 1NT range. 'Book' Precision used the

13-15HCP range.

The original CC Wei books played a 4+ diamond opening and 13-15HCP so there was no systemic bid for many 11-12 balanced hands with 2-3 diamonds.

4432 4423 4325 3425 4333 3433 3334 3325

Vanilla Precision should not move from the 13-15 range because it is going to confuse people that have read a basic outline of Precision.

The 1C-1D-2D does not show 4315, 3415 4414 or 4405 hands. It shows Ds

1C-2NT shows 11-13 or 16+(the 16+ version is left out of the notes)

The notes beside the 2C opening say 6+ clubs or 'good' 5Cs and 4M. If you play that method you would also play a 2+ diamond or many hands cannot be bid.

4225 and 2425 hands without 'good' clubs do not fit any of the opening bids, unless 1D=2+

Robert

Hi Robert,

Thanks for your review. I will check it through once again to remove the inconsistencies and unclear stuff.

The original CC Wei books played a 4+ diamond opening and 13-15HCP so there was no systemic bid for many 11-12 balanced hands with 2-3 diamonds.

4432  4423  4325  3425 4333 3433 3334 3325

That's basically how it works. You can choose to open a decent 12-pointer also depending on vulnerability and such. That's a judgement issue. The important thing is that you don't have a neboulous 1 for balanced hands weaker than the NT range.

The 1C-1D-2D does not show 4315, 3415 4414 or 4405 hands.  It shows Ds

Oops, I will correct that.

1C-2NT shows 11-13 or 16+(the 16+ version is left out of the notes)

Oops, I will correct that.

With 4225 you have the option of opening 1NT. With 4315 (oops I mean 4135/1435) you have the option of opening 1.

Hello helene_t

I appreciate the time and effort that you are putting into 'writing' down the simple Precision system outline notes. I hope that my comments are taken in the spirt in which they are given. Many thanks.

I am also a bridge system builder, so I know how hard it is to make evey little detail correct.

I am also a Type A person and I 'have to worry' about tiny details that I cannot change. I still 'have to worry' about them. Just the nature of the beast.

I did not 'know' about the 12+ option, when I read 13-15HCP for 1NT. It is certainly a playable option.

I have played a lot of Precision variants over several decades. I have played Precsion using a 12+-15 range, it was just not my style since I prefer 'narrower'

NT ranges.

Bridge conventions and agreements are a matter of 'style', please do not think that I would suggest any changes to reflect my own style. I am 'way past' mad science in my Precision methods so it is very unlikely that I would ever play a simple Precision method.

Best regards,

Robert

I have updated the FD-file in the first post of this thread.

More complete, but still incomplete: in particular, developments after major suit openings are rudimentary but I think "no agreement" will be realistic for many of the intended users :-)

I have specified devolopments after 2 and 2 in details since these are specific to (Vanilla) Precision. Some might disagree with the choices I made, feel free to comment.

I have included an escape-mechanism after penalty double of 1NT as suggested by Gerben. Also thanx to Robert for finding errors in the previous version. And thanx to all who contributed to the polls and related discussions that have resulted in this FD-file so far and hopefully a more comprehensive one in the future.

I have included some conventions that we (more or less) agreed upon which are not specific to Precision (fitbids, transfers, negative doubles).

I have updated the first post of this topic with most constructive auctions until and including responder's second bid. Some trivial stuf like "false prefence" and such is included: allthough obsolete for the geeks at this forum some users might need it :P

There are some details about the forcing character of various rebids that we have not discussed. Feel free 2 criticise.

We have not discussed forcing notrump response or not. I have specified the notrump response as forcing but not included any follow-ups.

We have not discussed check-back after a 1NT rebid. This has been left blank.

I have specified FSF as GF but not included any follow-ups.

As for inverted minors: I assume 1-2 is constructive but NF. With a GF hand you will have to fake a club suit. Does everyone agree?

Another thing to discuss is support doubles. I have not specified doubles on sandwhich overcalls, I suppose that's an a la card convention that could be added to any system.

2 as just invite seems like a waste. What you can do is to include 3 to the bids showing fit. If you want to keep this as SJS as some people still play this, use 2 as invite or better.

And please, don't ask me questions when I cannot respond because you are in a tournament :P

I would have bid 4 as your partner, your bid was ok.

Hi everyone

Faking a club suit could lead to some very strange(bad?) contracts.

How do you shut down a 1D-2C auction and still show diamond support?

If this is vanilla Precision, 1D-2D should be 'forcing' one round.

FSF played as GF makes some Precision auctions impossible to bid.

What do you do with 10-12HCP and xx or xxx in the 4th suit?

Is the xyz convention with 2Cs inv. and 2D played as GF, a possible solution here?

The Italian style of FSF forcing to 2NT might allow the bidding of more invitational type hands to be accurate.

Support doubles can be divided into two main camps. Optional(which I play) and mandatory which gives partners more information(or a much less accurate sort)

Another question is how high to play Support doubles. I play them up to and including 3H(for spades) while many only play them at the two leve.

Meckwell plays them to the 4 level, however, they are not known for passing when the auction gets to them. :P

Regards,

Robert

Thanks again, Robert, for your great debugging effort :P

Faking a club suit could lead to some very strange(bad?) contracts.

How do you shut down a 1D-2C auction and still show diamond support?

Gerben says that a single diamond raise should be forcing. This solves this problem as well. However, without a forcing raise you will still have to fake a minor suit after a major suit opening.

Of course, you can add Jacoby 2NT (or something similar) to this system. This raises a more general question: some of my comments will become obsolote when combined with certain conventions. Should such comments be avoided? Similarly, I don't define doubles that might be support doubles as "penalty", I just leave them undefined.

If this is vanilla Precision, 1D-2D should be 'forcing' one round.

Ok, I got it :(

FSF played as GF makes some Precision auctions impossible to bid.

True, but FSF as not GF makes it complicated, u need to specify what follow-ups can be passed. Is this more of a problem in Precision than in other systems? Otherwise, maybe I should skip FSF in Precision and make FSF an a la carte convention. But I was afraid that auctions starting with 1 would become messy if FSF is to be adopted from a module based on the assumtion that 1 is natural.

Btw, what about

1-2

3

and similar? In the poll, a lot of people voted that the forcing character of 2/1 auctions should be "SAYCish", maybe for lack of better alternatives in the poll. So that's what I'm aiming at. However, I think it makes more sense in a Precision context to play this raise as non-forcing. Any thoughts?

Hi helene t

You have been doing the bulk of the work. You deserve the vast bulk of

any thanks. Well done. ;)

I was just trying to help out a 'little.'

Assuming that a player 'knows' that he is playing a 1C* forcing system, s/he

should be able to count the number of suits bid 'without' counting the 1C* bid

as a natural suit for 4th suit forcing bidding.

I learned Blue Team Club system several decades ago and many of their bidding

ideas still remain in my current methods.(A Big Club system with 2/1 GF)

1M-2D- played as 'forcing' to 2NT allows opener to bid 1M-2D-2M 'waiting' and

1M-2D-3D as GF.

If you do not play something like this method, the Precision

system cannot bid some(many?) normal hand types.

1S-2H-3H is still passable.

You could switch to a 2/1 GF style, but I am not sure that the system would still be

Precision, since 'Precision' opens 11HCP hands and responds with the same 11HCP

at the two level.

I no longer refer to my Big Club system as Precision 'like' because the only thing

left from playing 'book' Precision is the 5 card major opening. :)

Regards,

Robert

True, but computers are less smart than people (at least when "people" refer to Precision players, lol).

1-1

1-2* alert! FSF!

may be the result if Precision is used with a generic FD-plugin for FSF. Donno if there is a more elegant solution to this than makig FSF dedicated to Precision.

New update:

- Bug fixes. In particular, it was not clear to me how to specify that continuations after all-seat openings apply in 3rd/4th seat when the latter have only been partially specified. So I have deleted all 3rd/4th-seat-specific openings. This means that it looks as if strong jump shifts apply after a 3rd/4th-seat opening :-( I someone knows how to fix that, feel free to post an improved version.

- Contested auctions after our 2/2-openings have been developed.
