I do not upgrade or downgrade for tactical reasons (like making it harder for them to find majors). I just make an evaluation of my hands worth then put it in the appropriate range. I do see merit to upgrading a 14 that is say.. 2254 more often than one that is 4225. I don't do this but it makes sense.

A question for those who often open 1 and rebid 2 with 4+5:

What is responder expected to do with a 2533 invitational hand? Say something like:

xx

AQxxx

Qxx

Kxx

With most of my partners I would bid 3, but my partners guarantee 5+4 on this auction so I'm jumping into a real fit. Playing 3-minor on a 4-3 fit with something like 23 high doesn't really appeal to me, and this is potentially a much more serious problem than reaching the correct partial when responder is weak. Perhaps 4th suit is used as a non-GF asking bid? I'm just curious what methods people use to sort out the longer minor on these hands, or whether people just ignore the problem.

;) Awkward hand. Different treatment at IMPs versus matchpoints. At matchpoints I would probably open 1 or 1 and rebid 1 NT. At IMPs I'm gonna open 1 and rebid 2 on the theory that looking for a game is more important than finding the better part score.
