This hand came up yesterday: How do you find out the Q is NOT missing?

Dealer: ?????
Vul: ????

3 - 3

4 (3 losers)

- 4 (nothing in )

4 now shows missing Q?

Realistically, unless the bidding was Pass-Pass-Pass-3 or maybe Pass-Pass-3-Pass, West would bid 4 over 3. But if it did start, 3D-3H, the bidding is correct as far you gave it.

4 Denied any control in hearts

4 by opener says, great, no problems with hearts (I have a control there), but only the Ace is useful. If responder was counting the King as a control, that is wasted. So opener is known to have a singleton

Over 4, responder will bid 5 of a minor to "sign" off. This says, of my two possible covers, one was the spade king. If responder does not signoff, he is still fishing for slam. The only option left is 4NT (cheapest "step") after the ACE inquiry. This generally shows the ACEs (or with two losers, at least one sure cover) and is looking for missing queens. The rule are simple for missing queens. With space available below five of the lowest suit, you bid the lower suit to show missing queen in the lowest suit, and the higher of the vacant space to show missign queen in the upper suit. If there is only one spot (say suits were and so 5 would be available, you bid the one spot to show a missing queen (no indication which).

Here there is no room. So you have to make an informed decision as responder. Do you want to be in slam opposite any missing queen? If so, you can bid 4NT. The reason is clear. You have the King so one loser in partners hand is the club King, you know he has a singleton , so that is another loser. So if he is missing a queen (in either suit), that is his last loser. But do you want to be there?

If partner is missing a minor queen, the worse hand he can hold is... x AK AKQxx A9xxx, and of course you hsve no play for slam. Against that, he could hold same hand club jack and there is some play (3-3 diamonds and Club queen is caught). The best he can hold is... x void AKxxx AQJT98 where your "x" of clubs is the 7 so you can safely ruff two diamonds in dummy if suit diamonds split, as is likely, 4-2

If you were to bid 4NT, partner would bid 5 with no missign queen, 5 with missing club queen, and 5 with missing queen. In the first case (he bids 5), you pass. If he bids 5, you would probably choose to play in your 5-2 or 6-2 fit rather than venture to 6, and if he bids 5, you would bid 6 and hope to be able to ruff two diamonds safely in your hand, if necessary.

Note, playing in 5 in the 5-2 fit (partner has AKQ) when the club queen is not the end of the world. After all, partner might have six or even seven diamonds, and might have the diamond Jack too. Because of this, I would probably try 4NT over 4, but then I am aggressive. Any ask for missing queen with opener holding control rich six-six with jacks, will result in you being in slam very quickly. Although it is not clear asking for missing queens is a fair idea. Also, it is unlikely over 4 then 5 bid responder would accept five clubs as signoff with this hand anyway. Partner has to have one sure cover outside of the spade King if he signs off here, for his 4 slam try.

This hand shows the "bump" problem. The bidding would have been.. .3-4-4NT-5 at my table. Over 4 bump, 4NT shows 3 or 4 losers and both minors. Here, there is no way to investigate if three losers below 5. Playing hannie's modified MisIry, might help on this hand.. in that there would be no bump, so you would surely arrive at the same 4, 4 what to bid next decision point.

Why with 5 hearts and a 3 count would that player assume partner has a heart preempt after RHO passes. Either LHO has like...28 and a void, or partner has a strong 2 suiter. I don't think playing MisIry that hand should bid 4H over 3D.

I have a lot of experience with bids that can be weak or strong. Believe me, you get to know when partner has what after a while.

From yesterday's bridge tourney:

2 Multi

- 2 Pass or correct

2NT strong NT

- 3 Transfer to (neatly stepped out of partner's way by responding 2 and not 3 or even 3 with 5 3)
