High Level Decision

Echognome

Recommended Posts

I'll pass, pard will lead from AK, it may make, then the opps are set.

If its ruffed, I'll get in and lead the other minor, and that may make, for down 1.

This seems reasonable to me.

Pard is likely void in hearts, and has something like 2-0-5-6, or 1-0-5-7 or 1-0-6-6

If bid to the 7 level - there will be a Spade loser off the top.

If I'm wrong and they make the slam, its MP not IMPs so its not as costly.

Partner was willing to bid to five level by himself....so tell me a little about partner. He didn't jump to 4NT immediately over 2. What would that have been (WK/PRE minors or STR minors?).

This is matchpoints. I suspect the bidding (if RHO) at other tables will be

(2H)-3(di)-4NT and they will know to stop in five or go to six, or even (2h)-3D-(5D) exclusion or the like.

Ok, without any prior knowledge, their "multi" has prevented them from using blackwood, so they may off some stuff. On the other hand, 6 could very easily be an advanced save (EAST.. xxxxx xxxx xx xx), and partner loaded.

So there are two inferences here.

1) Partner who wanted to SAVE over 4M would have bid 4NT immediately, not 3D

2) Parnter could have bid 4NT,over 4 to suggest very long diamonds or strong diamonds and so-so clubs.

So, while it maybe wrong, I am going to double on the premise that partner has some good stuff on this auction and I certainly don't want him thinking to bid 7C/7D. Since he went ot the five level by himself, he may very well take a phanthom save if I pass. All this is based on if he was very weak and very distributional he would have started 4NT....

Pass. I assume dummy will have solid spades, and either 0 or 1 loser in the minors, and some help in hearts. If he has no minor suit losers I don't really want to X. I am not worried about partner taking a save, he bid 3 only diamonds, and then bid 5C, he presumably knows that I have heard him.

One thing to note is that you are in a pickup partnership where your partner couldn't be sure how you would take 4NT. See earlier discussion on freak hand at kitchen bridge where several people thought a direct 4NT after a weak 2 should be blackwood. Of course not having an agreement may make this an untenable problem as you don't know who is bidding to make and who is bidding to sacrifice.

2* - 3 - 4 - P

4 - 5 - 6 - X

All Pass[/hv]

* Multi

Oops. Finally found the hand records and had missed the diamond Q in the south hand. The Multi was a bit ripe, but the contract was untouchable. The play went K - A - x - x. Then the top 3 spades pitching a club while I helplessly discarded. Then a spade ruff. Diamond and a heart up and it was all over.
