  1. Yes flame you are right. Out of 12 pairs only two bid and made 4 hearts. The others were pushed to 5, that went down, or did not bid game. Some were in 5 diamonds doubled. Sayc is Standard American Yellow card. So right. I should have taken more time and thought about his play, but I took long enough already to check their cc and was running out of time :) and I did not know that people open 4 card majors in sayc...I thought he wanted to make an overtrick, since it was matchpoints, and thought he could fool me into believing my partner had the king. Remember he has expert on his profile and I have intermediate. Way too funny actually.
  2. Except that next time, when I duck, declarer will have 5 and I will give him an overtrick. . Yes we got a bad score because others were in hearts going down. No complaints here, the TD is my favourite acbl Td and this has nothing to do with her. And yes that was clever play and yes he could have made it but I said in my post *the way he played it*. Thanks for the info.:) I now understand why people would open one spade with that hand.
  3. Our opps in an acbl tourney today had sayc on their cc. I will post a link to the hand. 4 spades doesn't make the way he played it, but I assumed that in sayc if someone has 5 hearts and 4 spades will open a heart and vice versa. We had a bad score because I jumped up with the queen of spades assuming opener had 5 and my partner had none left. The td said some open with 4 in sayc, but I omitted to tell her he had 5 hearts http://online.bridgebase.com/myhands/fetchlin.php?id=6524379 Any comments or opinions please?
  4. Sceptic, if your response is to me, yes I know what opening a can of worms is :) What I don't know or understand is what you are trying to say in your post :) If I opt not to have a sub, and have permission to leave the tournament, the director can get two subs to fill in the empty seats. I can see where that can be a problem though on a day where there are a lot of bad connections. You might not be responding to me, or we might not be on the same wavelength...
  5. 1. Unfair to penalise subs for giving their seat back to the original player. 2. Unfair to expect a player to play most of the tournament with a sub. Tough one. If you get rid of the black mark against a sub who gives his seat back, you might have a lot of subs who disconnect if they don't like their partner, which will create more problems for the TD. Personally I would rather not play in a tournament if my partner cannot come back. Vicious circle. I would like to have a choice...play with a sub for the rest of the tournament whether my partner returns or not, or leave the tournament entirely. Is that possible or does that complicate life further for the TD? At this point, this is the only thing that makes sense to me.
  6. Marc, are you sure it was private chat? Maybe they log private chat in tournaments? I thought this whole thread was about getting views on whether to log private chat or not, so I have to assume there must be a misunderstanding somewhere. ;)
  7. I am sorry I asked. I just wanted to know the difference between closed and deleted. A simple explanation, without all the extras would have been much appreciated.
  8. [hv=n=sk109865ha7d3cak53&w=sa4hkj986dakqxcj2&e=s73h43dj9876c8764&s=sqj2hq1052d1054cq109]399|300|North is declarer in 4 after west opened and alerted 1C[/hv] 4♥ led by east , small from dummy ,8♥ by west taken with Ace by declarer. Spades led by declarer, Ace taken by west and a small diamond lead by west from AKQx to the J in his partner's hand to lead a heart again. Can you tell for sure that this is cheating? I kibbed this hand in a tournament. :o
  9. If I remember correctly I asked for the thread to be closed, not deleted. Is there a difference? I was under the impression that a closed thread can still be read. Thanks.
  10. I agree with Scoob. Go ahead and log all chat...I vote for that. I am sure that you will make sure that all the members are aware of it.:D
  11. You can't use bbo dollars to buy books and cds unless there has been a change in the last few days.
  12. Talking about yellows, why would a yellow log in invisibly and then play in a tournament where everyone can see he is yellow. Can you not log in under the same nick, and not be yellow? Actions of yellows confuse me at times. I understand that they can't be available all the time, and that they would like a game of bridge too, but then why log in as yellow...Maybe someone would be kind enough to explain. As to allowing TDs to go to tables invisibly, (suggested in another forum), that might not be a great idea. Yellows can enter Invisibly, private clubs, private tables, and in fact anywhere they like on bbo, except for private chat rooms. Some people might already consider that an invasion of privacy.
  13. I voted that I don't really care about different pricing but, as someone else mentioned, in poorer countries, people who own computers, have an internet connection AND play bridge can afford to pay a dollar to play in a tournament. At the moment I live in a developing country where one dollar is a lot of money for the man in the street. But the man-in-the-street, doesn't play bridge. I log on from a developing country, who is to decide whether I should play at a discount? My honesty? The whole idea is just beyond me but as I said, I do not care. Some people play in ACBL tourneys even though they aren't members and have no interest in masterpointsis . they play to give something back to BBO . This must be the best online bridge-site and obviously a lot of people are putting in a lot of time and effort to keep it running smoothly. But what really takes the cake? The people who will not pay to play and who say they will leave if they have to pay membership fees, are also the ones to make special requests about ads...i.e. no pop-ups please. I don't want to have to click to close the ad etc.....Geez, what is this world coming to! ;) :D
  14. Just one question. Who is We? Thanks.
  15. In shop bridge on BBO, you can buy the cd, Counting at Bridge by Mike Lawrence.I had it sent to a US address and it was received in a couple of days. Have no idea why it's called snail mail :)
  16. There are four tournaments going on as I write this, and three of them disallow kibitzing. Is this going to be the norm from now on? :)
  17. If you have 5 students, but other mentors don't get a response to their emails offering their services, then obviously something isn't working right. Especially if students have been on a waiting list for a year..
  18. I am not sure this 5th chair foundation works, as I have been on their waiting list for a long long time now too. In fact I sent three emails, over the course of a month, before I got a response that just said I would be added to the waiting list. The fact that Flame was assigned a student who did not respond to his emails, in my view, shows that there is something wrong with the system. I would assume that the person in charge of the foundation would first check with the student before assigning a mentor to him? Having said all that, I have done everything that Ben talks about in his post. Downloaded many sets of bridgemaster, had lessons on a one on one basis with professionals, had many books sent to me by my teacher ( which I have not read yet :) ) If there is a shortage of mentors, then I think that younger people with some talent should be given priority. I do not fall in any of the above categories, therefore I did not contact the foundation again. However it's a shame that people like Flame cannot find a student to tutor. I would ask, what is wrong with the system. I cannot find the original post of this thread :D but since I posted a short note on another thread, Paulhar, who is an advanced player , asked me to play in the main lounge a couple of times, an experience I thoroughly enjoyed. As dummy, he sat and watched me butcher many a hand, and I would like to thank him for his time and patience.
  19. Yes Paulhar. I read this thread every day and I am not an advanced player by any stretch of the imagination ;) Many thanks to everyone that posts here. :)
  20. Great post chamaco and a big thank-you from people like me who don't have the guts to post their views. Some commentators are great and we all appreciate their hard work. However, others feed us with information we aren't really interested in. i.e. In the course of ten minutes, one of the commentators mentioned her partner's name twice! There are a lot of good recommendations and ideas above on how to improve the whole experience, and I am sure that, others will come forth with new ones. Rona :)
