Hello bridge players: I would appreciate advice on this. How do experts bid when the opps double your RKC response? Eg. 1H P 3H P 4NT P 5D X ? Does a XX show first round control in diamonds, and what would a pass or a bid mean? Eg. 1H P 3H P 4NT P 5D X P and 1H P 3H P 4NT P 5D X 5H Also, what would XX mean in this sequence? 1H P 3H P 4NT P 5D X P P XX Thanks.

Thanks for the responses. This hand actually came from a beginning bridge player, and she wanted to know how to bid the hand. You,re right, ArtK78. The strong hand does have 14 cards. The correct West hand is ♠ A K 7 ♥ A K J 9 ♦ A K 8 ♣ Q 9 5 East has ♠ Q 5 ♥ Q 6 4 3 ♦ 9 5 ♣ A K 10 7 4 How would you bid to a grand slam if either East or West opens? 1. I understand the 2C-3C part by ArtK78, but you didn't say how the bidding should continue to get to a grand slam. 2. Question for FrancesHinden. I would think holding ♣ A K 10 7 4 alone without the side queens would be sufficient for a positive 3C response, don't you think? Then how can you be sure you have the queens for the grand slam? I would not be able to count all 13 tricks. 3. And Mike777, please explain your initial bids. I don't know how to put your reply in a box, so I re-copied your answers. 2c=2d 2nt=3c 3h=4s(rkc in h) 4nt(4)=6c(kC, grand try, deny other kings) 7c=now 7h or 7nt. -- Assuming that you bid 2d as a waiting bid for all types of hands, and 2nt shows 24 HCP, what is the name of the convention when you use 4S as RKC for hearts? And then I don't understand the rest of the auction. Can you then visualize the responding hands having the right cards for you to bid the grand slam? Thanks.

How would you bid to a grand slam with these hands? W has ♠ A K 7 ♥ A K J 9 ♦ A K 8 ♣ Q 9 5 2 E has ♠ Q 5 ♥ Q 6 4 3 ♦ 9 5 ♣ A K 10 7 4 Please explain any artificial bids used. Thanks

We are not playing new minor forcing or fourth suit forcing In this auction Opener Responder 1C 1H 1NT 2D 1. Is responder’s 2D rebid forcing? 2. Instead of a 1NT rebid, opener bids 1S. Opener Responder 1C 1H 1S 2D Is 2D a forcing or non-forcing? 3. Responder hand is ♠ 3 ♥ KQ754 ♦ QJ432 ♣ 76 a. What should he bid after opener’s 1NT rebid? b. What should he bid after opener’s 1S rebid? Thanks in advance for all the expert replies!

Thanks everyone for your thoughts on this. And kenrexford for taking the time to explain it in detail. I really appreciate it!

Holding ♠ AJ9 ♥ AJTxx ♦ KQxx ♣ x I opened 1H, and partner responded 2H. At the table, I bid 3D, and partner bid 3H with ♠ T8x ♥ KQx ♦ Jxxx ♣ KJx I passed and made +170 Two questions: 1. Should I bid 2S or 3D as a help suit game try? And why? 2. I felt partner should have bid 4H because he had a maximum raise, even if he felt we did not have a "fit" in diamonds or have too many losers in diamonds. What do you think? Thanks.

On page 8 of Modern Constructive Bidding by Marshall Miles, he mentions a bidding system called Blue Jay by Tom Wood in California. Does anyone know where I can find out more information about this system? I am interested in more bidding examples than the ones Marshall Miles indicated. Thanks.

Awesome! Thanks for the link, Jari!

Thanks Roland! I feel your description makes the most sense to me. And I like your examples!

Hi Everbright, I believe registration opens 10 mins before the start time. You have to be quick as the 10 spots fill up very quickly. What I do is open the window showing the tournaments starting within the hour available say about 11 mins prior to start time -- 4 mins after the hour, or 26 mins before the hour. As soon as I see the tournament pop up, I get in and register. You usually only have a few seconds, or you won't make the top 10. I don't understand why BBO does not add more spots. Good luck!

By standard, I'm thinking of Standard American Yellow Card. Good question!

Recently in a club game, the bidding went 1H P 1S P 2H P 3C 3C was alerted as forcing and artificial. I know in standard bidding, a new suit by responder is always forcing, but I don't understand this artificial part. Does anyone else play this way also? My questions are why would you do so, and what is the advantage over standard methods? What is your hand like that you would want to use a convention like this? And would 3D be natural? Just wondering. Sorry, I don't have the hands, but I don't think it's important. I'm just curious about this convention, and it's really bugging me! Thanks.

I have one more thought on this. You don't have to agree with me. Frankly, I don't care whether BBO staff plays or not, since I don't play in these tournaments, and this is not going to make me lose any sleep over. And if the staff plays, I think all participants should be aware that BBO staff may play in these money tournaments, whether the money involved is negligible or not. So if the players choose to enter, at least they have been warned. If you don't like it -- don't enter. It's that simple. But there should be a warning.
-
In my humble opinion, I don't believe that BBO staff will cheat, because I am sure they all adhere to extremely high standards. However I feel that they should NOT participate in money tournaments, because there MAY BE a perception, whether true or not, that they may have an unfair advantage. It is the same reason why in contests or prize draws that anybody working for the company or associated with the company in any way, like relatives of employees, cannot enter, because there is a PERCEPTION that they may have an advantage. I also think that BBO staff playing in money tournaments under another identity is wrong.

Hello, Not sure which thread I should put this in, so thought I'll start a new topic. I enjoy playing in these free MBT, even tho sometimes I am very frustrated by how the GIB bids and plays. Thanks BBO for doing this. I have one complaint however. It is hard to register for these tournaments, as registration is usually full in the first minute the tournament opens. What I am complaining about is that after the tournament starts, there seems to be sitouts and red players. This is NOT fair to all the other players who wanted to play but could not register. I'd like to see that people who don't finish the tournament, no shows, or who've registered for other tournaments while these tournaments are running should be banned from future FREE MBT. After all, we all know that they last 25 mins and if a player registers, they should make a commitment to sit through the whole time. Does anyone else agree with me on this?

Claim refused then Ave- for slow play
tenbrvc replied to Chamaco's topic in BBO Tournaments Discussion
I'm adding nothing new here :-) I fully sympathize with chamaco, because the same thing happened to me in one tournament where the t.d. hosted a clocked event with no adjustments for ANY reason. Even told us not to ask! In my case, because of what I perceived as deliberate slow play by the opponents, but they had time to chat amongst themselves, I claimed all the tricks with 2 mins remaining on the clock. They even had the gall to REJECT my claim after about 1 min. I tried to reclaim again but time ran out on me. I had to admit :) , sorry to say, that it got to me, and I told the opps that they'll never get to play in any of my tourneys, even though I'm normally a very relaxed person and couldn't have cared less To add insult to injury, it was a survivor tournament, and instead of a very good board, I got an ave- which sent me packing. I did add them to my enemies list, and asked the t.d. to do the same. Whether he/she did, I do not know, and I am now wondering if there is more I could have done? Should I have notified a yellow so these players could at least be put on a watch list? My feeling is that other players should not have to experience the same thing, because it really ruins the game for the affected players. That's my two cents worth! Thanks for reading this. -
Wait a minute! I don't understand two things here. :-) 1) Are you saying that if you register at the partnership desk for a tournament, and if you are not paired up when the tournament has started, that you are then moved automatically to the sub list? 2) When you click on the "Show substitutes" box, that people from (1) above are listed first, and then the sub list is in the order of who applies first?

Hi, I'm unclear about a few things. First, when do cuts start happening? Can they occur after the first round? Or only after the second round? Are you able to specify when the cuts occur? That is, do they happen after every round? Is it possible to set it after certain rounds? Are you able to change the % cut after the tourney has started? And is it a swiss type format after each round? Thanks!

IMHO, I think these masterpoint symbols are kind of silly. First of all, you only get them by playing in ACBL tourneys, so I suppose it's a way of promoting those games. And I don't have a problem with that! So for those of us who don't plan to play in the ACBL tourneys, we will never get the recognition. Would other players think we are no good because we're not ranked? And here's my wish item related to these "symbols", lol. How about a flag that shows a player's nuisance factor? For example, like average time they take to bid and play a hand, and % of disconnects or being replaced when playing in tourneys, etc?? This might be a way to improve their behaviour on the site!

Intentional logouts during tournaments
tenbrvc replied to guggie's topic in BBO Tournaments Discussion
Hi! The other day I had a person who because I refused to make a score adjustment (that was in my tourney description, btw), he consistently harassed me by pressing the call director button. Eventually, I guess because I ignored his calls, I felt he deliberately slowed his bidding down in a clocked event. I eventually had to sub him. I have added this person to my enemy list. And even though this is not an intentional disconnect, I see Gweny's point in reporting such persons so they will not cause problems in tournaments hosted by other T.D's. -
HOWTO: Tournament conditions of contest
tenbrvc replied to uday's topic in BBO Tournament Directors Forum
Great instructions and reference material, though I have to admit I haven't tried it yet. May I ask here how you can create and upload a set of prepared hands for a tournament? Thanks! -
GREAT idea about "Whenever a player is subbed for any reason or by anyone, list this message on TD's chat." Do you know if we have this feature yet? P.S. I can't figure out how to quote from a previous message and reply to that! How do you do it?

Here are two wish items! The other day when I was hosting a tournament, I had many disconnects, intentional or otherwise. Please advise if I am wrong, but I read somewhere in the past that the software keeps track of these players and prevents them from entering future tournaments. (I don't remember -- How many of these disconnects before a player is barred? And for how long?) Going back to my wishes! (I have a habit of going off topic B) ) I also had to frequently sub players who are non-responsive (connection problems?) or very slow. Maybe the software can do something about these players also? While the nuisance factor is lower, they do cause problems when running tournaments, especially in a clocked movement. My second wish item is sometimes I wish all directors can have their own private clubs. It is so much easier to screen and manage players when running tournaments. Players cannot enter your tournaments unless they agree to abide by your rules. I know you can add players to a private file, and perhaps maybe this process can be made easier. Hope I make sense! Have a nice day!

What exactly is barometer scoring? How does it compare to swiss? Can you apply either of them to individual tournaments? And does 'survivor' work for individual movements? The option does not look grayed out when creating tournaments. Thanks!
