I think 4♣ is better.
-
Against an expert's jump preempt here the doubled penalty you will get is usually 500, no matter what vulnerability. ... But since we are red, i throught we could have earned more by bidding, for +600 or even happen to +1370.
-
To make it simple. I would like to play the second one. Double = "Make your decision depends on unbid suits", Pass = "Make your decision depends on bidded suits"
-
Of course you can double just with 18+ HCPS and 4351 hands. But in this case you must put nearly all other hands besides freaks into pass. I think that it is much more useful to give double the meaning: I like to defend. This may be based on HCPS or on flat distribution or whatever. This is less accurate then your definition but makes the pass much better defined. Double = Peanlty , pass = Cooperative ? or Double = Negative "How are your side suits?" , Pass = "It is up to you!"
-
With no honors in opened suit he should be cautionous. I would rather not open with KQx xxx Txxx AKx. ----------------------------- Gee! Would the 5♣ advancer being down 3 ?
-
I will just pass. When you bid opponent may call 4♥. You are very short in side suit and is likely that they have one to be established. You may not use partner's trumps in ♣ so you can expect him to have nearly nothing offensive. If he has respective length in one, then opponent may have another.
-
Gee looks like i "have to" bid 3♦. ... and of course my p shoots. Anyway my p sitting pass-out will normally re-open.
-
Let's forget about HCP!! Well, assume opponent have 5-3 fit. Unless partner has 4 hearts without any 4 card minors, we will usually takeout to an 8 card fit somewhere. The total tricks are 16. We will quite ofter turn 2♠= into 3?-1 (-90 -> -100) :( or 2♠-1 into 3?= (+50 -> +110) . If they have a 9 card fit and we also found 8 (Total Tricks are 17), we may even turn 2♠= into 3?= too! (We might find 4-3 heart here, but TT is still 16) So instead of letting partner hesitating, i will double right here! Hope this is convincing at least 50% of the time! :P Take-out =/= other major, that's my partner's rule! Even if you happen to play 4-3 ♥ , unless partner's 4-4-2-3, you will always have an 8 card side suit fit, increasing the total tricks actually avaliable. (The side suit can be established only in our own contract!)

Why must partner have at most 11 HCP? RHO have at least 13 LHO have at least 6 I have 10 40-13-6-10 = 11 Thus partner have at most 11 HCP.
-
Partner have at most 11HCP, you have 7 useful HCP + singleton(+2 or 3DP) + 5th card(+1 or 2) , making a maximum of 23 to play at 3♣♦♥. Thus you better double before it is too high! ------------------------ Gee I throught for a moment and I may pass first. If opponents bid on partner will have less. If partner have 10~11 HCP he will bid. Sorry!
-
One of the problem is on the 5 card suit. If the suit fits well, the 5th card worths an extra trick (3 points). Otherwise it does not worth (1 point, however not much in a slam). However we never know unless you say somthing about it. -------------------------- Gee i guess i just PASS HERE. If only Aces is his concern why don't he just use gerber? Obviously partner wants something more than A's (A five card suit ? or extra honors ? I can't tell). :(
-
This case is marginal between Pass and Double. In our style, An overcall here is a opening hand and a takeout Dbl is 16+DP(11+DP with void , +1 DP for each 5th 6th ... card in any suit). It depents on what actions your partner are likely to take. Playing with my slammish partner i will choose to Pass.
-
With your assumption it is quite easy through: Here, Partner passed, and I bid 5♦. (I guess he don't have any ♣ honors, so every honor in his hand fits for you!) If partner doubles for extra values, then I bid 6♦! :P   I am still afraid that partner has ♣ void and both cases make an overtrick!
-
For those who play new suit forcing: I will splinter as responce to 1♦ (3♣ for 13~15 HCP) :P
-
For just one thing 6♦ is worthwide : Partner is not minimum.
-
1) It is alright to bid 2♦, through 3♦ is also ok! 2) If i were his partner, holding ♠ --- ♥ AQxx ♦ AJxxx ♣ QJxx , , with partner's 6~9 "fitting" HCP, I will choose bidding 5♦ right over 4♠. (Down -1 to Making+1) :P In the pass-out seat if you assume all partner's cards are in right position you can bid 5♦. If he got a singleton ♠A then he may not have so many fitting Q's or J's for 5♦. ----------------------------------------------------------- The decision between 4♠ or 5♦ is a matter of wheather the side suits ♣♥ fits. However we have completely no information on that. Anyway i will try 5♦ as if partner is void in spades.
-
I bid 5♦ ! I am optimistic. I haven't showed support, partner's pass doesn't mean anything, so I make a bid. (I hope partner raise to 6♦ with medimum hand)
-
I think the trump honors make 7♥ worthwide. I am certain that he has full control of the side suit, but his trumps. Well all in all it depends on the scoresheet and your partner. (Does he drink?)

ATB - unanimous?

We play new suit forcing, so i do not encounter this kind of problem much. B) -
It makes me think of a hand I played. Partner[N] ♠ AKxxxx ♥ - ♦ Kxxxxx ♣ A Me ♠ x ♥ AQxx ♦ AQx ♣ KQJTx The bidding was N----S 1♠ 2♣ 3♦ 4♦ 4♥ 4N 5N 7N If on the other hand partner takes captaincity N----S 1♠ 2♣ 3♦ 4♦ 5N 7♦ We would have missed 7N (7♦ makes but 7N is better) I think that may be the reason of your 4♥ cue appears instead of 4NT
-
Double! If p responce ♦ or ♠ you are very, very happy (Might have a slam). If 4♣ is reply then bid 4♦!. Assume partner passes weakly with doubleton ♦ and the rest break 3-2, u have 7 tricks and he can ruff spades for the 8th and even the 9th. Your partner and RHO have the rest share of 16~20 HCP so 4♦ / 5♦ is making at least in this case.
-
I think u might cash a second round of ♦ before playing ♠Q so that opponent least likely to return a ♦
-
Couple of slams to bid
MinorKid replied to el mister's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
If my partner is a little more clever he should had bid 6N and do not cue bid. :D 2N 3♣ 3♦ 4♣ 4N 5♥ 6N Anyway i've made it! -
Whether you reverse instead of jump shift should have to do with the relative lengths of the suits rather than the quality. It is not standard to reverse with 5-5. It should be a good suit for 1♥ ? 3♦ and good 5-5 here is a standard one. Because we play new suit forcing, he can go 1♥ ? 2♦ ? 3♦ to show 5-5 shape instead. 1♥ ? 3♥ to show 6x♥, too strong for that (Ax-AQJxxxx-AK-xx) just rebid a 2~3 card 2♦ but not 3♦! Why waste a whole level while we cont find a fit? :o
