  1. Unless I am wrong, there are now minimum requirements imposed by ACBL in order to open (a strong) 2 clubs. If that's true, what are the requirements? If not true, tell me. :( AT one time, you could just decide your hand was close enough to game to try for it. e.g. KQJ10xxxx, x, KQxx, -
  2. Very little reponse here to the question of continuing the preempt, so I will try to provoke more relevant answers with specific cases. They are vul, we are not The auction has gone P- 2H - P - You hold x, 10932, Axxx, Jxxx Opponents will almost always be a lock for 4 spades. If partner has a max for his weak 2H, maybe they only make 3S. What do you do? Suppose you hold a much better hand -same bidding. This time, you hold x, 10982, AQxx, xxxx What do you do? Thses are the types of situations I am asking about. I did not find them addressed in the references. I wonder if Mike Lawrence (my "go to" bridge author) has written on this.
  3. I have not been successful in finding for articles that address this specific situation. I have been having a debate with a sometime partner on this. We both have strong opposing opinions. The bidding goes P - 2X - P - ? There are tons of articles on opening weak twos, but not the specific situation of P - 2X - P - ? . The basic questions are when does one advance the preempt in light of: responder's hand shape/strength Whether X is a minor or major Vulnerability (your/opps) All opinions or references gratefully appreciated.
  4. Appealing to members expertise: There is an old (british?) film, 1950's maybe 1940's that I have been trying to locate. It takes place on a passenger ship. One ongoing joke in the film is four men playing bridge throughout the film. The only way they know what port they are in is that one of them is always seasick and whenever he sticks his head out a porthole to upchuck, he comes back to the table and says something like "We are in ______."
  5. A very elderly friend registered for an open pairs game. Just before the start, her partner got a msg that she (the partner) was cancelled and got kicked out. My friend was not kicked off. She had paid for her friend's entry. She called me in confusion and I told her I would try to get some information. (she has never used a computer, except for BBO). Any idea what happened?
  6. I am on but my partner is getting the msg. Anybody know if BBO is overloaded? Thanks
  7. If declarer claims some number of remaining tricks and defenders ok it, When if ever, should dummy point out an error in the claim? e.g. Declarer says "I have 5 of the remaining 7 tricks." Dummy sees three not two losers.
  8. The data could be used to confirm/deny a claim of inordinate delay. (that could lead to unauthorized info or even evidence of collusion) It could also help determine which pair is responsible for late boards. The data need not be maintained. It could even be discarded at the start of a new round.
  9. Several aids are readily available only when playing on-line. (I think maybe convention cards should be allowed even in face-to-face competition given the age of the average USA player - I recognize that this could be interpreted as unauthorized info.) Is this permitted when on-line? 1) Can I look at my convention card during the bidding and play? 2) Can I have reading material open that covers conventions and agreements?
  10. Can I play in a club I never played at. It is close to where I live ? Thanks
  11. I think it is clear that the pandemic is an opportunity to publicize and perhaps expand our wonderful game. I was disappointed to see that the chess community has apparently been more successful - Wall Street Journal On Chess in the Pandemic - in grasping the opportunity (or have I missed something). The ACBL/BBO story over the last two months is a remarkable one and should be told. Where in the media can I read or hear about service to home bound seniors, much needed intellectual stimulation, learning opportunities, ACBL/BBO unbelievably rapid response and growth, etc. I have seen nothing outside of the bridge media. I quote a rather opportunistic politician (bah !) " A crisis is a terrible thing to waste." Folks - The iron is hot !
  12. playing 2/1 standard (SAYC). North opens 1H p - 1H - p - 2C p - 2H - p - 2S p - 3C - p - 4NT (1430) p - 5D - p - 5H What does each stage of N/S bidding tell partner starting with 1H = 5+H 12+ points ?
