Hi all, One interesting idea is what Garozzo currently plays: after a 3rd seat opening, and partner makes a card-showing XX (or here, double of Michaels), then opener's pass over RHO's action denies a full opening. All full openings must call. After handling charges, pretty good I think. Later, Dan

Hi all, When you adjust a score after the tournament is over, it confirms the change to the player and directors, but does it also reflect in the file presented when the "Tournament Results" button is clicked? These aren't ACBL tournies but perhaps the issue would apply to them as well. Thanks, Dan

1NT with a four point range
DJNeill replied to EricK's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Hi all, In my experience, a 4-pt NT rebid range, while required by the system possibly, is a significant weak point. So significant that it pulls in too many random bad scores to make it worth it in my opinion. It can be alleviated by having a very good (complex) checkback structure. Also, it's not as bad when the 4-pt rebid is in a precision or kokish context so that it is VERY strong like 18-21 so it can handle some aggressive investigation and sign-off opposite a minimum or no fit. Thanks, Dan -
Hi Glen, I was watching that board. Once a caliper sensitive enough to measure the level of TD-skill many of the ACBL TD's have on BBO, I think an answer will be obtained. Thanks, Dan

Hi all, This won't mean much to non-ACBL players, but WJ05 (weak 2's instead of multi/2-suiters) had its brush with fame, as we were 2nd in our NAOP-B district final by 2.5 matchpoints. At about a quarter-board, anything can be blamed, but of course some (ok how about throwing hand down with an outstanding trump "all mine") were worse than others. Let's see some more WJ in the US. Hi all, 1♣-1♦-2♣ is non-forcing, about 15-20. 1♣-1♦-3♣ is stronger, and promises a long good suit, but is still not forcing. 1♣-1♦-2♦ is the artificial GF, which can include the long club hand. All 18+ HCP hands open 1♣, which includes 5♦-(332) 18-19. Hi all, At the risk of pushing the price higher, I will probably pay for the GIBs: 1) practicing against interference in the bidding room 2) at work when you have to leave for a while in the middle of the hand 3) GIB interface on the actual program, which I own, sucks compared to BBO Thanks, Dan

Hi all, Checking the current rosters at: http://www.ecatsbridge.com/ for the Senior Bermuda Bowl, the American entry actually won the Open Bowl 4 years ago. They might have an advantage. Italy is fielding Garozzo-deFalco and Mosca, but also... Forquet! Watch him online practicing as 'pietraccio' on BBO. Lots of other big names that probably didn't win their local qualifiers that were old enough for the Senior event, from all countries. Hope to see vugraph of the Seniors too! Later, Dan

Hi all, In Innsko I remember encountering a good convention: 2S opening is 4+ cards in any suit. It came up! Later, Dan

Hi all, I know that garozzo (sillafu on bbo) plays this 3N as denying 1st round club control currently with his girlfriend. Thanks, Dan

Hi all, Try this 2-bid structure. Doesn't matter really what you play, but it looks fun. Later, Dan

Hi all, Also, on defense it gives current count quite faithfully (as my partner at least). I wonder if the declaring bots know this and take that into account in their simulations. Later, Dan

Hi all, For me as well the lobby names don't resolve to their profile quickly at all times any more. I am at work with a very fast cable line. Sometimes they'll be quick but very often now there's a lag. Thanks, Dan

Anybody have notes on Nightmare?
DJNeill replied to ABadPlayer's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
Hi all, If you don't have Nightmare notes, there's a pretty detailed writeup in the grainger-lavee cc from the World Junior Teams going on right now. http://www.ecatsbridge.com/documents/files...lavee+notes.pdf or click here Hope that link works. Else worm to it from ecats' main page. Later, Dan -
Hi all, The ACBL in Memphis has a recording system but it is not very useful for keeping track of undisclosed agreements, psyches, etc in practice because the whole reporting process is too much work to be worth it. On BBO, however, there could be a database-stored listing of reports, that might be queried by directors during a tournament, or at the very least later on when a report is submitted by email. It's much better than having every single director keeping a personal log unlinked to anyone else's. And I suspect many directors just have notes on people's profile, which makes importing them to a central DB pretty impossible. Is this viable, or is there any need/usefulness for it? Thanks, burned for the umpteenth time in ACBL tournaments by undisclosed agreements, Dan ('djneill')

Hi all, If anyone is staying within walking-distance of the Gatl. convention center and would like to split their room from Monday night April 11 through Sunday morning April 17, please let me know. Male, non-smoking, junior, scientist. Thanks, Dan

Hi all, I play OS off in the balancing seat. Thanks, Dan

Hi all, I think, if in Purple Twos, one opens 3S, it doesn't right-side an eventual 4S contract. Thanks, Dan

Hi all, Our city's first IMP League went off well this year, but one area for improvement was the choice of prizes. The winners will of course get the best prizes, but others get prizes too. Does anyone have good ideas for prizes? Thanks, Dan

Hi all, The upcoming Sept 9 ACBL Instant MP game includes, along with the hand records, analysis books, and diskette, a double entry score sheet. Apparently, you post the matchpoints received by each pair, and add up the lines of masterpoints and determine percentages, like the olden days. My question is, does anyone have experience with this to know why this sheet is included? Doesn't ACBLscore give a printout of all results both instant-matchpointed and locally-matchpointed? For any info on this, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Daniel Neill

Hi all, Say you play with a certain partner that forgets conventions whenever you bid quickly (how could a fast bid be a gadget?). Say that your normal pace is rather quick against most opponents (using the time generate your call-choices based on opponents's possible bids). Is it unethical to make gadget bids at a purposefully-slower pace, if that slower pace is normal for most people? Thanks, Dan

Hi, Back when I had time on my hands, I hosted 4 marathon tournies, 70 hands. They took about 8 hours. Uday was interested in the boundary-checking aspect of it. In all of them, only about 1 out of 40 pairs would stay the whole time intact. Maybe 2 others would stay individually. What happened was the first tournament had lots of (Av-)'s because there weren't enough players to scrape up in time. I spent all my time getting subs too. The second tourney I made much smaller, which helped immensely. Still nobody stayed the whole time, but subbing was easier. Now the sub-requesting software is better which helps. Also, more players seem in tune with how tournies go (lots of new users before). It would be more desireable for me to serve such a tourney now than then. Later, Dan
