This is true, and for any newer players reading this and looking for useful discussion, this auction does warrant some thought. One bid that is available in this auction that maybe isn't immediately obvious is 2♠, which can be used to show a really good raise to 3 of the minor. That makes an immediate 3♦ raise something like 8-10ish points and a 2♠ bid something like 10-12ish points. It can be very useful for finding 5m or thin 3NT contracts. Obviously this doesn't exist when the opening bid is 1♠ rather than 1♥.

I'd be surprised if you could find three people, let alone in the same room, who think it's right to bid 2C or 2D with this in 2/1.

this will be unanimous

Fortunately, someone else asked this very same question very recently and it was answered by a bridgebase rep! link

The timeline doesn't tell us anything, though. Here's an article about a problem a B772 had in Egypt. IF this or a similar malfunction occurred on Malaysia Flight MH370, it would explain why there was no radio call/ACARS message/ATC radar contact. The plane could literally fly in any direction for any number of minutes or hours, until fuel starvation or autopilot malfunction. ATC in this part of the world does NOT have the capability to monitor “raw (radar) targets” with any reliability. But anyway, here is probably the latest and greatest answer to your request: article

the best system must be to open 1C as dealer and let partner relay
-
passing with a strong hand seems like a terrible idea. we don't even have to guess what to do by preempting, we could open 1C and just keep bidding till we find a fit and judge how high to go before letting you in

I would definitely pass some forcing bids and psych a lot

what 3 events had most profound effect on history?
jjbrr replied to onoway's topic in The Water Cooler
This is obviously flat out wrong. Tensions had been growing forever and war was inevitable. Otto von Bismarck said in 1888 “One day the great European War will come out of some damned foolish thing in the Balkans.” -

Or the achievement system in every video game since 1998. I didn't say it's an original idea.

Slight derail to respond to this as an idea just popped into my head, so feel free to move this to a new thread. Has BBO considered implementing a sort of "trophy" system or achievement system based on player results? For example it might be nice to win an award for making 3NT 10 times, 50 times, 100 times, 500 times, etc, and receive a little trophy icon in an awards page in the profile or whatever. I can think of literally hundreds of little awards that might be fun to try to accumulate that would incentivize players to stay longer and play more hands. You could even have a set of awards that you earn only by playing with lots of different partners, eg bid and make game with 100 different partners or with partners from 100 different countries or whatever. Maybe as you accumulate achievements, you can have another little icon next to the red circle number with how many masterpoints you've won online. Obviously the awards wouldn't need to require a certain level of skill - they should be accessible to beginners and experts alike - but obviously having lots of awards would be an indication of how much experience you have on BBO and probably correlates well with skill. It might also be a good way of getting people acclimated to the features in the web client of BBO; give people a trophy for setting up a team game or a teaching table or whatever in the web client. Anyway, just a thought.

While you're at it, life is so, so, so much better with adblock plus. Just disable it for all bridgebase sites!

I found the service road/frontage road/access road question interesting. I'm certain I've used all three, so my answer should be "I use them interchangeably" but obv that wasn't an option. I don't recall which option jlall picked, but it was unique to Dallas and San Antonio and presumably was a big influence on the test's final (correct) results for him.

The language test is great. I'm from NH originally, grew up in TN, and currently live in TX, so naturally it thinks I'm from Anchorage or Phoenix.

I watch very little TV, but I try not to miss anything with Anthony Bourdain in it. I'm a big fan of his CNN show, and the NOMA episode was pretty good, as was, of course, the El Bulli episode when he was still on the Travel Channel.
