  1. and Fantoni-Nunes is the 1st runner up in 2004 Cavendish Pairs.
  2. Yes, Fantoni-Nunes is the reigning open pair world champions. But they didn't only excel in MP, their IMP result is equally impressive. Take a look at the most recent European Team Champion. They ranked 2nd to only Bocchi-Duboin in the Butler Scoring. So I guess their system is really a very good one.
  3. This style of 2 level opening has a striking similarity with Fantoni-Nunes system. Their 1 level suit opening promise 14+ while 2 level suit opening are natural bid with unbalance shape and 9+ to 13 HCP. 1NT is 12-14 including all bal hand and some semibalance hand. Judging from their impressive tournament result, I can see that their system is workable and actually highly competitive.
  4. I conclude here with the possibility calculation with the help from a computer. Ben's expert line: work on all S32 break and singleton SJ. The chance is 67.8%+5.7%=73.5% minus some chance of being ruffed in H or overruffed in D, the possibility shd be around 73% Ben's beginner line: work on when S32 with longer trump holder holding at least 3H, the possibility is 67.8%*77.9%=52.8%. It also works when E has Jxxx in S and squeeze works (complicated calculation for the squeeze work, but the result is 58.4%, never computable at the table). so it addes 11.3%*58.4%=6.6%. It may also work when trump J is singleton, then you have two lines: either draw all trumps and hope for squeeze or you hope for the one holding 4 trumps also holds at least 3H and 2D and you know how to get back to hand by ruffing C or H. squeeze is the same as above, 58.4% while the latter line is 62.1% (also not computable at the table). So you shd try to ruff the D loser rather than play for squeeze in this case and the chance is 5.7%*62.1%=3.5% and the total chance for this line to work is 52.8%+6.6%+3.5%=62.9%. This line still not too bad but is about 10% worse than the immediate ruff D line.
  5. can't think of a hand that can bid 2D but not redouble for SOS. Give up
  6. If you play with your pick up pd in BBO e.g., after the simple auction such as 1NT-(X)-2D? Is 2D a transfer? I don't think there is a unique standard. Then shd the responder self alert his bid and explain his hand to the opp his hand while his pd is perfectly in dark? I don't think this treatment is fair either. The opener has perfect right to pass or correct to 2H depends on his guess of the meaning of 2D bid. Both are perfectly legal bid. So I am still regarding that the explanation "no agreement" is the most correct answer. BTW, perhaps playing friendly match in BBO, the best way is the opener to ask publicly what is 2D. It is not fun for both sides if one side just win the bd because of opp's misunderstanding due to unfamiliar partnership.
  7. Is it possible to program in the following way: When one has registered to play in a touranment. He is allowed to play in any bd with more than 15 min from tournament start and he shd be allowed to continue to play the bd if it passes the 15 min time mark. But he shd not be allowed to start to play the next bd. If he accepts a tournament invitation, which is within 15 min to start, during any bd he is playing, he shd be allowed to continue to finish the board if possible but shd not be allowed to start another bd. I know the bd he is playing may not be able to complete but I can't think of a way to overcome this.
  8. When one sits down to play, he hopefully want to enjoy the game but if he found his partner is not up to his expectation, I think it is his own right to choose to leave the table. Why bother to play with a pd you don't want to play. So I have no bad feeling if one player did finish only one bd and leave without saying a word. But I will be annoyed if someone left during the bidding or play.
  9. As there are different ways to treat the 3S bid, you are using it with your own risk without prior agreement with your pick up pd. So why must you tell your opp what is the meaning of this bid? Your pd is also guessing. So your correct answer should be and definitely should be "no agreement".
  10. [hv=d=n&v=e&n=sa4hk97d9765ca642&w=s6hqj852dq832cj75&e=skqj82hat4dakjt4c&s=st9753h63dckqt983]399|300|Scoring: MP[/hv] It is a pairs event (not online). The bidding is as follows: W______N______E______S _______1NT(1)_X(2)___3C(3) P(4)___3D(5)__X(6)___3S(7) P______4C(8)__All Pass(9) (1) 12-14 (2) Penalty, equal strength + (3) Alerted and explained by N to both E & W in paper (South not knowing the explanation) as rubenshohl, inv+ in D (4) After the explanation, west decided his hand not good enough to bid (5) Since submin, settle for 3D (6) Penalty again (7) No alert was given by N this time (8) Realize that his pd's hand must not be the same as his explanation (9) Don't know why there was no further action from EW West led a D and after the 1st D was ruffed by south, he called the director complaining there was misexplanation by NS. Director asked all the players to continue the play. Result 4C-1. West then told the director if he knows that 3C was not rubensohl, he will bid 3H and his pd will surely raise to 4H (doubtful imo, may easily go overboard). Director asked for the convention card of NS. In the convention card, it is stated that NS plays rubensohl after opp's overcall but play escape method after opp's penalty double (However, the escape method stated in the convention card cease at 2S which is a natural call, no higher bid explanation is given). The ruling, table result not stand, correct to 4H by west just make. Director said that this was the possible most favourable result for the non offending side. As the result of this ruling, 4H was a top bd for EW and 0 for NS (a side note, EW won the event because of this ruling over the 2nd pair within 2MP). Questions: (1) Should EW be awarded the most favorable result? (2) Is there any responsibility by W of not taking any action noting that the obvious escape by S after the double of 3D and also the pass of 4C? W for sure knows that N has misinterpreted S bid. So is W taking a two-way shot? (3) Can S bid on even if as suggested by W that he will bid 3H and E will raise to 4H? Can S bid 4S to offer contract for sacrifice and thus 4H shouldn't be the final contract? (4) Is it fair to both sides receiving such score from this board (probably yes for NS but is it fair to adjust a top to EW)? (5) Can split result be awarded to two sides?
  11. but how would you know who will become the declarer? So that means you will not see all the hands during the auction and until the opening leader leads his 1st card, you won't see any hand. Is that exactly what you want?
  12. Ron, your hands did not prove anything. Hand 1. If 6D play be north, it is an excellent contract but it is normal to play by south, then the chance may just slightly better than 50% (good opp likely to lead C). Hand 2. You have a sure loser in C, and you have to hope H breaks and you have to establish either C or D, seems that the total chance less than 50%. Hand 3. Almost a straight 50% bear any ruff possibility. So the result can be either way if cards are placed the other way round.
  13. You can try the Viking Club relay structure (very powerful and logical imho): 1C-1NT (1NT = 8-13, no 5 card M, for range 8-10, you can include even 5422. For 11-13, 5422 shape is excluded) 2C-? 2D= 11-13 2H=8-10, 4H 2S=8-10, 4S, deny 4H 2NT=8-10, no 4M, no 5m 3C=8-10, 5332 with long C 3D=8-10, 5332 with long D 3H=8-10, 2245 exact 3S=8-10, 2254 exact 3NT=11-13, 3334 exact After the above response, the 1C opener add one step to relay for the exact shape, e.g. 1C-1NT-2C-2H-2S-? 2NT=4S 3C=4C 3D=4D 3H=3433 exact 3S=2425 exact 3NT=2452 exact After 1C-1NT-2C-2D-2H-? Then: 2S=4S 2NT=4H, no 4S 3C=5332 with long C 3D=5332 with long D 3H=2344 exact 3S=3244 exact 3NT=3343 exact Using this structure, the only hand pattern that will give u pass 3nt before you can relay the responder's exact hand pattern is 2353 exact (the sequence being 1C-1NT-2C-2D-2H-3D-3H-4C or 1C-1NT-3D-3H-4C)
  14. wlc to BBO forum, bowbells I guess you have missed one pass from the opps. The bidding probably shd be like this: 1S - P - 2C - P - 2H - P - 3S Suppose you are playing sayc. Then pd's 2S will not be forcing. So I think this 3S shd show 3 card support and game going hand.
  15. You cannot review the hand until the hand has been played for 16 times by looking at the webpage. But you can open two BBO windows at the same time and you can look at your most recent bds.
  16. You can click on NetBridgeVu.exe (shortcut named "Bridge Base Online") and choose the button "Open Bridge Movie from your computer". From the popup window, you choose the folder bearing your login name and select the latest lin file which contain your most recent hand records.
  17. Suppose you and pd agreed to play Michaels with weak or strong hand. How will you bid after RHO open 1♥ with: Hand 1[hv=v=n&s=skqxxxhxxdkjxxxcx]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Hand 2[hv=v=n&s=skqxxxhxxdkjxxxcx]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Hand 3[hv=v=n&s=skqxxxhxxdkjxxxcx]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] I guess most of you will bid 2♥ with hand 1 and 1♠ with hand 2. How about hand 3? Some may choose to bid 1♠ because of the great imparity between ♠ and ♦. Some may still bid 2♥ to show the shape. OK, let's assume you start with 1♠ with hand 3. The bidding continued as follows: 1♥--1♠--2♣*--2NT P----? * Non forcing What do you make of your pd's 2NT bid? As your NV overcall only promise 8+ (may be lower for many of you :) ), so I assume the 2NT bid shd show somewhat good 11-13 pts. Will you continue bidding with 3♦ with both hand 2 and hand 3? Bear in mind that when you bid 3♦ with hand 2, you are thinking that you are showing a medium hand with 55 and so it must be a forward going bid looking for the best game contract. While when you bid 3♦ with hand 3, you maybe thinking that you are expressing a will to play in the denomination. How should your pd, the one who bid 2NT, interpret your 3♦ bid? And how shd he bid with:[hv=v=n&s=skqxxxhxxdkjxxxcx]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv]
  18. Well, Ben's idea is absoultely workable but as our partnership will bar the double at the 1st round (which promises the other 2 unbid suits). Then let's working from here. E's 1st pass and the 2nd round double (we play this double takeout) should surely indicate hands similar to 4H (with 5card more likely he will take action in the 1st round of bid 2H now), <4C, <3D(we won't double with length in D here) and by deduction, we must have length in S. And with vul as shown, E must have at least a decent hand to risk the double after pd's silence in both rounds. The 3rd round pass by E indicates that he probably didn't have 5 card S (although he might). So the most probable handshape is 4423 exactly. Let's turn our attention to North and South bid. North did not rebid his S in 2nd round so nearly for certain his S is a 5 card suit. Consider S's bids. The 1D then 2C should promise at least 9 cards in minors and with the final bid of 3D, he must hold at least 5 card D. So we can deduce the distribution for all hands (seldom you will have such informative bidding auction that you can deduce everyone's pattern before you see the dummy). From West viewpoint, the most likely shape for South will be 1354 or 1255 and north will be 5233 or 5323. North should have honors in S suit so the most of the remaining HCPs must be with south. Then now west has to decide whether he should pass or bid 3H. If partner has some C minor honor (such as K, Q or J), they rates to be useless and now you are almost dead because either they will make 3DX or caught you with 3HX. So we must hope that East to hold CAxx. And he rated to hold the HA as well. For S, any reasonable holding is OK, because we can easily finesse vs North. Again, DK in the west hand shd likely score. From then, we can easily conclude if SA is with North, opp will make 3D and if partner holds at least KJxx is S, 3H will make as well, so pass will be a success. If East holds SA and he also possess SJ. Then, 3H will be a make and 3DX will be one down. If East has SA but not another honor, then 3H will be one down and 3D will be one down also and this is probably the only losing situation that if we continue with 3H rather than pass 3D. So my conclusion is that 3H bid by west is the likely winning action. Someone may doubt the last double by East but please bear in mind that partner does not promise to have such good H (may even have only 3 card H when he considered passing 2DX is fatal) and equally possible is that he holds Kxxx in H and KQx in D, then 3Dx will be a success. Of course, the final double by East is very risky but it may be equally rewarding. One final note: the final result shown that if 3D undoubled just make, you will get an exactly avg score. If you make 3HX, you will get a top of course and even if you are not doubled, 3H just make will give you a share top in this board. And I don't think opp will sacrifice in 4D and even they do, 4DX -1 will give you a second top.
  19. I play 2/1 GF unless rebid minor with my favourite pd and the style is as follows, though not the mainstream: 1) Does rebidding your major show extra lenth, or is it a catch-all? Yes, promise 6+ cards and strength undisclosed yet 2) Does rebidding 2NT show a balanced hand? Stoppers in the unbid suits? or is it a catch all? A catch all bid. 3) Does a raise of partner's minor show 3 or 4? Does it show extras? shows at least Qxx support and extra value. 4) Does bidding a new suit above 2M show extras? If bid at 2 level, it does not promise extra while at 3 level yes. 5) What should we play a jump in a new suit as? (e.g. 1S-2D-3H). Splinter. 55 just bid at the cheapest level and rebid the 2nd suit 6) What other questions should I discuss with a regular partner. The most important thing imo is the bidding style. e.g. Light or solid opening, preemptive style, etc.
  20. [hv=d=e&v=e&w=saqjxxhxxdkxxctxx&e=skxxhktxxdaxxcaqx]266|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Last night watched the Euro Youth Champion England vs Norway. On the vu graph, EW bid to the almost hopeless 4S (everything wrong side). By using Keri 1NT, 3NT should be easily arrived (far superior contract than 4♠) W E 1NT 2♣(1) 2♦(2) 2NT(3) 3♦(3) 3NT(5) (1) Puppet to 2♦ (2) Forced (3) GF relay (4) any 4333 hand (5) 5332 vs any 4333, 3NT rated to be a better contract Please note that West can start with 2♥ (transfer to 2♠) first. But in the book, the writer has specifically mentioned that 2♦/♥ then 3NT, though also representing 5332 hand but the suit is weak (not better than QTxxx) so to differentiate from the suggested sequence which guarantee a better suit. BTW, who can tell me how to align the auction and how to include quote from others?
  21. Yes, the pre-balance double is risky but considerably less in MP. You won't get a good result in MP if you let opp play in their suits NV when you can have 2M to play. For the hand concerned, I don't think west can take any action if 2 pass comes to him after the 2D by north.
  22. So does this mean that if W has 109x Kxxx KQx xxx, he shd pass while with his current hand, he shd try 3H? (and this strategy fits with the hand well)
  23. [hv=d=s&v=e&n=saj862h1063dq52cj3&w=s1094hkq52dk97c954&e=skq73ha974d108ca72&s=s5hj8daj643ckq1086]399|300|Scoring: MP[/hv] So everyone has the same answer but the full hand is as above. EW has 3H and NS has 3D (big violation of LOTT, B)). So who should be at fault, E or W? Seems that the answer is obvious that E is responsible for all faults but please explain which alternative action he can take? Should E bid 3H himself? Or should W venture 3H after RHO bid 3D? Please remember, this is MP, even if NS went down 1 may not be a good result for EW if they can make 3H. Or EW should accept the fact that they are done because of the vulnerabiltiy and keep silent after 3D.
