Since this was the (wife of the ) edited 10/2/2009 Unit President that made the bad ruling, I suggest contacting your District Board and asking how to report this. Just as a general statement, directors do make mistakes (not always this blatant) and I am taking for granted that the ruling was already challenged at the club level and the director refused to change her mind after referring to her law book and/or a committee review was denied. You can also write "Ruling the game" and asking Mike Flader his opinion. He can be reached via email at rulings@acbl.org. He might be able to make some recommendations on how to proceed. As an aside, how did your unit ever elect a person with this unethical an attitude and make them president of the unit? Is this a new development in this person's personality?

Need more information. Was the family illness something that was discovered during the match or was it known before the match began? Was there no one available to finish the last 7 boards? Do you not have something in place to cover the situation of a player having to leave suddenly? In a regular club game, (ACBL land) I would adjust unfinished boards with avg + for non offenders and avg - for those that had to leave suddenly if I were unable to find a replacement player to finish out the session. My first thought would be to find a replacement player.

cherdanno stated my observation. When an opponent queried my bid and I typed in a description, the description covered up all the prior bids and altho I knew it was my turn to bid, I could not see what the bids were and had to ask the table to tell me so I could bid. Perhaps a fading of the description or placing it elsewhere rather than over the bids in the bidding area would help. Or even being able to move it ourselves to another spot is a possibility. I have noticed that when reviewing a movie and clicking on a bid for a description does the same thing. So, one either has to review all the bids first and then click on the alerted ones for descriptions after, or there is difficulty in reviewing the rest of the auction. I like the idea of having the description fade after several seconds. The results screen is really nice especially with the average supplied at the bottom. Gives me a feel for how well I'm doing without me spending the time to mentally add up the individual scores. I think it is a great product. Thanks BBO for all the work!

Maybe this is a little off topic, but why did the first pair (that started this chain reaction) want to move to the other section in the first place? I think your new club director was being unnecessarily put upon and the players were out of line for suggesting any of the changes once the game had started. I think that asking for the last sitout or a N/S seat or a specific section is something a player should make known to the director upon arrival at a game and only common courtesy. I do understand that there are personalities that sometimes clash and realizing that you are headed for your worst nightmare in 2-3 rounds can make you want to ask for special consideration. I also know that most directors quickly develop a good insight into their players skills and personalities and take that into consideration when assigning table and seat assignments. Since this was a two section non duplicated board movement, it should have been clear that the one started hand should have been redealt immediately IMO, but as in all these kinds of situations, calling the director for assistance right away would have resolved the issue without consuming more of the round clock time and without creating friction at the table. My sympathies go to the nervous almost brand new club director who was trying to please everyone and ended with more than one pair being upset.

Why do you think pard was asking about hearts instead of spades? If you believed that spades was the agreed suit and you answered accordingly and your partner understands your agreements as well, I do not understand why he could not be asking about the spade suit. He should know the quality of his hearts and maybe all he needed was to know he had running spades to bid the 7 contract. I see no faulty explanations nor misinformation. On the other hand, I also do not know anyone that bids 1H 2NT meaning a six card spade suit with max one loser.
-
What happened to misunderstandings and just plain bidding mistakes? I didn't think they were punishable as long as the agreements were explained correctly.

I think that a convention card is the place to put all that kind of stuff. I like keeping my profile simple and just putting things like....sayc, 2/1, precision...ask for more. Actually, if I see a profile with too much detail, I kind of skip over things that I should ask about and later it bites me. I do like the option of being able to put some specific notes on others profile such as...likes suit preference on trump leads... or udca. Things to jog my memory about what this person likes to play. To me, filling out a convention card with a new partner is the best way to start out a new partnership and you cover all the little differences player have such as 4 way transfers and super accepts.

I think you went one screen too far. 1. log on 2. click on ACBL Masterpoint Tournaments 3. Click on Update Your ACBL Number If you click on the 2nd ACBL Masterpoint Tournaments at number 3, it takes you directly to the tournament schedule page. This page is all blue and has 6 options on it. ACBL Masterpoint Tournaments Buy BB$ --Used for ACBL entries.....etc. Update your ACBL Number Examine your Masterpoint History Results of Completed ACBL Tournaments Learn More about our ACBL Masterpoint Tournaments GL

In v1 after you click on ACBL Masterpoint Tournaments, you get a screen with several options. One of the Options is "Update Your ACBL Number". On v2, enter ACBL World and you will see an option that says "Update Your ACBL Number".

You have not supplied enough information to allow a ruling on this issue. 1. Exactly when were the revokes established? 2. Did the offender win any tricks after the revokes? 3. When was the director called to the table? The issue of whether this player is a novice or not might also have bearing on the ruling.

With 19 HCP I double then bid. I expect my pard to bid hearts and that is ok by me. I then have a choice of bidding spades (asking for a stopper for 3NT) or bid one of my majors. Either way, I am showing my pard that I have a huge hand and I do not want to run the risk of having 2C passed out.
-
lol...actually roaring.... so, the robot games are a good exercise in "how to manipulate the bidding so you become declarer?" I've had pards like that before.

Conventional responses require an alert. Natural responses do not and 3C and 3D with a minimum of 3 is considered a natural response. "1. An opening suit bid or response is considered natural if in a minor it shows three or more cards in that suit and in a major it shows four or more cards in that suit. A no trump opening or overcall is natural if not unbalanced (generally, no singleton or void and only one or two doubletons)."
-
For what is is worth, in ACBL talk, a response of a minor suit to a Major opening is considered natural if it consists of a minimum 3 card suit according to the GCC. Most 2/1 bidders have several ways to show a gf without resorting to using 2c (with 2) as an option. Many play that any 2 level gf bid except clubs promises 5 (and sometimes lie). Many have modified Jac 2 NT to be 3 card gf support. Many use 3NT as the gf force bid, and many just bid 1S over 1H even with gf values because 1S is forcing if bid by an unpassed hand. To get on target here, if 2C could be a 2 card suit, I think it is an illegal bid in ACBL land. I am not sure it is accepted even if alerted as "could be short". Can anyone quote GCC on this issue?

It is my understanding that a recorder only records incidents. (s)he has no power of disciplinary actions other than submitting a request to investigate to the proper regulating authority if the situation warrants. I think that the report can not be used as evidence either, because there is a privacy issue concerning the protection of those that have reported the incident. There is also the issue of protecting the offending party as well. We are a system of innocent until proven guilty.

Abuse of Freedom By Tourney Director
Sadie3 replied to sniwas1's topic in BBO Tournaments Discussion
I'm confused about why you are upset with BBO. They did not lie to you, the Td did. ...and I'm confused about why you are not upset with the TD that did lie to you. It seems you are putting the blame for the lie on the only one that told you the straight truth. I also think that instead of complaining to BBO about what the TD (that you seem to love) did to you that you should complain to the host of the tournament about what his TD did to you. If the TD that lied to you is worth salvaging (which you seem to suggest), it appears the TD just needs to be made aware that (s)he was caught in the lie by the tourney host and educated in how to handle this situation. -
I think I figured it out.,... 2way drury for South and then there is no problem..... 2d.....4h....all done. :)

Penalties for fogetting system
Sadie3 replied to fred's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Depends on what your local club is like. Mine is at least half players over 70, and several of them forget stayman on occasion. This club is not a "serious" event, and enforcement of penalties for forgetting serve no purpose but to make those that are already having difficulties remembering things feel worse about themselves. Stratifying the games help this situation, and several of the life masters, silver life masters...etc. are being downgraded to flight C as their skill level decreases. These players still love the challenge of the game and know better than to attend regionals, nationals, and world events because they are out of their element. Everything needs to be put in perspective. -
I do not think that a full disclosure care relieves one from alerting alertable calls. It may explain the bid, but it does not fulfill the requirement of alerting a bid.

Penalties for fogetting system
Sadie3 replied to fred's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Events are goverened by whoever runs the event. In my local club, I allow all conventions and encourage full disclosure. It is a learning tool and many mistakes are made. I think this is the level where these kinds of things should occur. I also think that the bidding and practice tables are great for this here at BBO. I would never tell a player they must take a convention off their card because they are playing it incorrectly. I would tell them them they must play it correctly, or be penalized if it causes their opps damage and follow through on it. Bridge players are not children and I believe they would be infuriated with me if I tried to tell them they were not allowed to play their conventions just because they hadn't followed it completely (for whatever reason). -
Penalties for fogetting system
Sadie3 replied to fred's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
My rule book seems to be very sparse in detailing exactly how much penalty to impose for a lot of infractions. For instance, I can not find where it says to penalize a full board or a 1/3 board for cell phone usage. Can anyone guide me to where it tells this? -
ACBLscore question
Sadie3 replied to mangurian's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I thinkI read that you are entering only the first letter of the player's last name. That will bring up all the names starting with that letter for you to select from. Try entering at least 3 characters of the last name. It will make your selection list much shorter and thus faster as well. Husbands and wifes or pairs with the same last name also go in much easier as the second name repeats for much quicker selection. Once you have your data base set up, it is not so data entry intensive. Good luck. -
Some questions regarding psyches
Sadie3 replied to EricK's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
How delightfully naïve... Pray tell: What do you think happens when you go off and report a psyche? Do have some bizarre notion that the director goes and files this information somewhere? Do honestly believe that this information will ever see the light of day again? Best case scenario: The director will come over to the table, listen to your tales of woe, look concerned, and pretend to care. 10 minutes later, he'll have forgotten this ever happened. I recommend trying a little experiment: Next time you're at an event, ask the director whether he he has any ability to actually look at any of these recorder forms. Simply put, if the directors don't have the ability (and inclination) to consult these forms, then they aren't worth a plugged nickle. Why do you think naive? I am a TD that logs every psyche reported to me as to date, time, tourney, who and which hand. I also report it to all the other TD's. I also say , "Thank you for reporting it, but psyches are allowed by law 40". True, I do not consider it my top priority to review all psyches unless one name raises a red flag and then I review more or report it to those that have the online tools to do massive reviews.
