I've read something like this somewhere, but it went without response, so I'll put it here again. Some club managers tend to send an overwhelming amount of messages (5/day) to club members. When you are not logged in, this turns into a mail message you get at next login. Now suppose you're away for a week, or just haven't logged in for a few days. Suppose further that you are a member of 3 clubs (that doesn't seem too much, does it?). Now just do a little arithmetic, that when you next login, you will get 5*3*7 = 105(!!!!) mail messages. And you have to read and acknowledge them all before you can do anything else. That seems quite ridiculous. Not to talk about the time it takes with a not so fast connection. And somehow usually there is some delay between the messages you get, so it takes easily 10 minutes to get to the real thing. Oh, and I forgot to say, that most of these messages are invitations and warnings for tourneys that have already took place. A few ways to improve on this would be 1) Create an option to completely disable mail messages. (not the best) 2) Disallow mail from enemies and put your club managers on the enemy list (surely not the best). 3) Put an expiration date to mails sent, which could be set by the sender. So at least one wouldn't have to read all the expired invitations. (this would be cool if people used it actually) Any other ideas?

"No table talk" in my opinion should never mean what it literally means. There are far simpler ways to cheat than agreeing that saying "phone" asks for a ♥ lead. It should mean that you are to refrain from talking about anything related to the current hand, since you might unintentionally convey some information when you do so. Also it might be a sensible rule to avoid excessive chatting that distracts the opponents.

No, I hope now everything is OK. The confusion was caused by the BBO setup of showing me in the south position all the time. We were E/W. The opps, N/S ended up in 4♥x and went down 3. And the adjustment was the opps (N/S) making the 4♥ contract. Probably if they knew my partner had only 5♠ then they would have made it, don't you think? :)
-
Seems I still didn't get everything right :) The adjustment was 4♥= for N/S... (which makes it only worse)... And normally I wouldn't mind bad rulings since it is only a game. But in a swiss tournament a -10 imp instead of the deserved +10 puts you on the last table, and you even lose the joy of playing against successful opponents.

Sry... I messed up the seats :) It was not me who called the TD, it was the South player. I think all other data were correct.

I was sitting as west in a no-psyche tourney. In the last hand of the first round... [hv=d=e&v=n&n=s7hq3dkj98743ck96&w=s8hak76daq2ca8753&e=sqj542ht84dt65cj4&s=sakt963hj952dcqt2]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] ... the bidding went 2♠ - DBL - pass 3♦ - pass - 3♥ - pass 4♥ - pass - pass - DBL ALL pass. Nothing was alerted, the result was down 3 for 800. After the hand south called the TD and complained about the strange 2♠ bid with only 5 spades and 4 points. The TD said "you need to alert weak and also that you only have 5" and adjusted the score to 4♥= for N/S. After I pointing out to TD that a weak 2 does not have be alerted and that I don't see why the adjusted score is not an AVE+- the reply was "no.... and also 5carder, prohibited opps to bid properly". Well.... The first question is whether a weak does or does not have to be alerted. (I know it does not hurt to alert it.) I do not question that the 5card suit should be alerted, especially since it was agreed upon. (Though nobody asked us.) I do question though that any adjustment is neccessary. (If BBO allows procedural penalty then that would be acceptable.) But what to do with such a TD? I read somewhere else that abuse@ does not deal with such cases. And in fact I do really appreciate TD's running regular free tournaments, and I haven't had another bad experience with this TD before. The best I can hope for is that he/she is a reader of the forum (and that I get some supportive respones). But any other idea is also welcome. Added in proof: In the original version of this post it was west who called the TD, now it is changed to South, which was what actually happened. Added in proof 2: I also messed up the adjustment in the first version, it should have been 4♥= for N/S, not for E/W. Now it is corrected. Sry for all the mistakes  I must have been very tired yesterday.

Why isn't it better to download a users profile only when I bring my mouse over the name? Usually during a session I look at most at say 100 profiles. Never 5000. So altogether you could save a lot of traffic this way. Maybe it would slow down the mouse movement a little, but probably downloading a profile doesn't take more than transfering a chat message. The login time changed from 30 seconds to 15 (DSL,counting the downloading table list as well). But even after being logged on for 5 minutes I still get the "downloading profile" message for a positive percentage of players. Is the reason that previously a profile was only loaded when I pointed at a player, and now all profiles are loaded at the beginning? If yes, then I'd suggest to combine the two methods... When I move over a player, give priority to getting his profile. Gabor

Hi! What about making the team-match work like an 8-seated table? I mean the TD can open it like a new table, reserve some seats for whoever he wants to, and for the rest people could sit down on their own. The "start new table" interface is perfect, you can set to ask for permission, kibs, etc... The only difference would be that once the game has started, noone can stand up. Gabor

Hi! Yesterday we had a team match with 20 boards. After it finished the movie window didn't quite work properly (sry if this is already mentioned anywhere, couldn't find it). First of all the scroll up/down buttons didn't work at all. You could only use the keyboard arrows to get to the boards 17-20 and back to the top. But even worse, when pressing the "other table" button most of the time the program started to switch back and forth between the two tables at about a 10 switch/sec speed, and when it stopped, it mostly stopped on the table where it started :o . Seemed like a coin toss :P . After that this symptom came up even more often. I didn't have to press the other table button, just click on a board to invoke the "flashing mode". Anybody know the reason/solution to this issue? Gabor

I have quite often experienced that after registering for a tourney, it's starting time or the number of boards etc changed. I'm not talking about the "we start as soon as we have x players" tourneys but those that do this without warning, while others tend to extend the registration time by 10-20 mintues. These symptoms can be very annoying for the players: -Starting earlier then scheduled (without warning) can cause that people have to wait a lot for a player who went to take a 10 minutes break before the tourney. -Starting later without notice can cause that the registered player who thought he would have enough time to play the tourney suddenly finds that he doesn't. -The same with adding boards to the game, or increasing round-length (btw why isn't the round length or total length of a clocked tournament automatically displayed in the information window?) or any such action. I know its not easy, since the interest of TD's and players seem to contradict here... But still, some of these changes I think should not be allowed at all, while with the others the registered players should at least get a warning so that they have a chance to withdraw registration. (Although when registered with an unknown partner withdrawing can be very uncomfortable even if you have good reason.) Gabor

I have lots to say, but most of them were already said before me... but this interface is so nice I just can't stand using it... I'm completely in favor of "resubbing", but only if the program doesn't penalize the sub, and only if the sub agrees to be resubbed. Maybe this is because I've twice been subbed out of a tourney without even being disconnected ;) and the director would not put me back, wouldn't even ask p or the sub. Of course both the director and my p denied having me subbed, so it was really strange. Of course as Skorchev pointed out a sub would never want to stay when asked to leave (or would soon get on my enemy list :) )... so after all asking is not much better than taking action without asking first  . On the other hand I think that "subbing" should be considered as an opportunity to help other people (while you also enjey it), and not an opportunity to get into a tourney you just missed on the expense of the first one to get disconnected. This is more like behaving as a scavenger. This is again in support of resubbing after a polite ask. What more, I'd suggest that being resubbed should not increase, but decrease your black marks as a compensation of your efforts. Maybe even simple subs could get this type of present. You screw up a tourney and then help one out to get in balance (with your conscience too :) ). What do you think?

When there are say 20 people waiting for a partner, you browse thru them, but don't find a good offer. Then 10 minutes later you check again, now there are 22, but you have to browse thru all of them again in order to find the 2 new guys. And so on... The suggestion: It would be nice if the order of the people appearing at the partnership desk would not be alphabetical. A possibility would be in order of arrival (first is on top so you can't "get to the top" by reentering the que). This would mostly sorts out the problem I put above. An other possibility would be to sort by "level", so everybody can look for among the appropriate ones. Best would be the mixture of the two. Regards, Gabor

I think you shouldn't forget that this issue is also unresolved in real-life tournaments. There the solution is that either the pair who isn't playing slow calls the director during the play of the hand, and then the director can decide himself, or calls only after the hand. In this case the guilty pair "should" admit they were actually slow. The same should work here as well. The only problem would be "unfair play" :P but if someone wants to cheat, there will always be a way to do that. Gabor

I think it would be a nice idea that you could get a warning whenever someone creates a new tourney or maybe when a tourney is about to start, so that when you are just hanging around in hope of a fresh tournament you don't have to watch the new tourney box all the time. Of course this should be only optional. What do you think? Gabor
