Actually that's the most benign explanation. A more cynical person might suggest that the goal is to protect top pairs who prefer natural methods from those who don't. If you really can't handle a one level bid that has an anchor suit you don't belong in tournament bridge anyway. The more cynical might suggest that, but they'd be wrong. The drive behind this change in the regulation did NOT come from the top players. It's almost to trivial to bother, but needing to procrastinate, here goes: It is not even a secret: The most common introduction to a great lie is: "A survey has shown that..." It doesn't require a genius to see, that there is often many drives to change things, and that those in power can choose to support the drives they like. And it is so easy to make a survey give the result you desire! I have no idee how the mentioned comments were recieved, but important questions should be: Which questions was asked? Who was asked? How importent was the questions presented to be? Was the possible impact of the answers made clear? What was the context? (Lead up questions etc.) Furthermore; even if all criteria were met for a balanced survey, it doesn't nescesarily make the decision right. The refrence to "Not top players" obviously plays the "democracy-card". But decissions to target something specific, as opposed to a general rule, is often considered undemocratic. (And it is written into many constitutions, that it cannot generally be done, but only in extreme circumstances, and with great care.) Now bridge is not life, and few people, if any, will go to bed hungry, because they were denied to open 1M without the suit. And if we don't like the game we can leave it and take up another hobby. (For me chess, model-railwaying and soccer springs to mind.) But claiming that because "of comments received about 1H and 1S openings.", the decision is fair and obvious, is nonsense.

"The L&E and the Tournament Committee have met to discuss possible changes to licensing in the wake of comments received about 1H and 1S openings." L&E = Lions and Elephants? I agree.

Well put. Agree Agree Agree But maybe it doesn't, we should investigate. Agree  Agree, thus the poll seems right. If a poll is unavailable, I would adjust. I believe there is a significant percentage of passers.

Actually that's the most benign explanation. A more cynical person might suggest that the goal is to protect top pairs who prefer natural methods from those who don't. If you really can't handle a one level bid that has an anchor suit you don't belong in tournament bridge anyway. Quite right. And still they wonder why the game cannot attract young people. We tell them, this is a mind-sport, a clash of intellects. And when a young player then thinks: "Oh, maybe it is smart to let 1♥ show spades." They're told told it is a tactic to difficult to defend against. Mind-sport??? A real hilarious one is this one: The opponents open 1♦/1♥/1♠, and you bid 2♣ showing excactly 25 hcp, 3-3-3-4 or 3-3-4-3, and a sure doublestopper in their suit. Sorry, not allowed. To difficult to defend against.

They are calling a spade a spade, but they have no heart for people who consider bridge a competition, rather than a passtime for the better middle-class.

Isn't this the cat who shot Kennedy? You know, Lee Harvey Catwald. No, it's the other shooter.

Can I get a pair of glasses that turn reality into 2D? I really don't like anything that appears different from what I see on my monitor.

I'm human.

Neither do I. Just imagine: 1♠ - (1♦) - ??? If my regular partner accepted the bid and double, it is highly likely we would be on the same wavelenght: Hearts+limited values. If the opponents asked, I would tell them: No agreements. (As it would be illegal to have one.) If we had made an agreement, my opponents would be better off. Strange???

I know, and I'm goading KFay a bit here, in case you didn't pick up on it. Of all of the casualties of the internet, I miss irony the most. Disagree. On the internet, you have to write your irony well, you can't announce with a huge grin and smiley face to everyone who can't get out of your 1000 feet radius quickly enough. Yeah, bad irony is a casualty, but good irony will only be misunderstood by a few dumbnuts that we can then make fun of. Problem is, they will not get the point.

It's virtually guaranteed.

very mature. poor kfay :( You're only young once, but you can be immature forever.

Professor: "A positive and a negative makes a negative. Two negatives makes a positive. But two positives cannot make a negative!" Student: "Yeah, right!"

I'd try 3♣. Keeps the bidding low, and rightsides 3NT. If it promises a club-stopper, it's obviously not an option.
-
They might thank you too. When you bid spades next time, they have exchanged a lot of information, and will be well placed to make a good decision.

very mature. poor kfay :( Honestly I've never done anything like this before. Ok... I did get in a fight one time at bridge club... but not on the road!!! Maybe I've been in a bad mood lately... I just wasn't going to take it from this guy. I don't regret it yet... If "flipping the bird" is the standard crude sign language Im thinking of, it should be standard countermeassures. A good slap on the roof should be reserved for drivers endangering others through sheer negliance. Vandalism I've only perpetrated against a guy who hit me on purpose. The bidding went: He opened with an agressive honk, and I overcalled with a ***** finger. He balanced with a new honk at the next level, and I rebid my ***** finger. Then he hit me on purpose with his car, I persued and scratched it. He tried to hit me harder (rather dangeruous), and I considered fisticuffs (which in my case would often be an overbid). Instead I made an SOS-redouble, and bolted down a side road. He went after me. Closing in on a group of pedestrians, I decided it was time to call the TD. The blue boys arrived. Him being in a wheel-chair (solo motorcycle accident), and me being bald, bicycle rider and signalling left wing* all over, made them give a ruling completely in his favour. After the session they adjusted the score to -$1400 for me. It went to the appeals commitee, which changed the ruling to -$300. So I've learned my lesson: Never trust the police to excert justice. * By left wing, I do not mean "Democrats", but rather one step from full blown commie.

As usual; Partnership agreement. In my partnership it qualifies easily.

Made my day start with a genuine and good-natured laugh. Thx.
