  1. True, but no one on my team has more than 600 masterpoints, let alone a team average of 1000 (or 1500).
  2. Any assistance with a reference that states that this transfer response structure is midchart would be appreciated.
  3. Hi all. So we Q'd for the KO portion of the flight B GNT. The team we are playing tomorrow has one pair that says they play a "modified fantunes system". In particular they say: 1C has many meanings, most of them strong. Transfer responses to 1C 1D, 1H, 1S are sound and forcing 1N is weak 2C is 5+ 2D is "flannery like" with 5/4 in the majors either way 2H/2S is 6 card sound preempt or 5 card with a 4 card minor None of us have played against such a system before. Any help with a defense we can learn by tomorrow at 1 would be appreciated. Thanks, Ben
  4. To further explain Semeai's thoughts, if I were going to break a black suit from my hand, it'd be clubs. For one, that's less likely to blow a trick than breaking spades (starting spades from my hand blows a trick unless both honors are offsides, and starting clubs only blows a trick when the K is onside). Secondly, breaking clubs definitely gets me the entries to play on other suits. I would try a diamond to the K first, but then I'd just play A and out of clubs.
  5. So you know (in case you don't...I didn't until I got here today) the bus from the airport to hotels is relatively cheap (I think for 2 people it's still cheaper than splitting a taxi) and comfortable. I'd recommend it.
  6. Welcome to the forum. These are all interesting suggestions, many of which have been said before, but it's always good to be reminded of them. I will say that suggestion 2a is already implemented. If you click on the hand you wish to be playing from (either declarer or defense) it will only show you the hands that person could see.
  7. I think 4♠ is fine. I really hate 3♠, partner described his hand with the 1♠ bid. If he's not going to pass, he should double (bringing diamonds into the mix and showing tolerance for clubs). For that matter, I don't like how declarer played either, the play of the spade and heart suits was a bit spectacular.
  8. Last I checked we don't need a passport to get into Canada, but we need either a passport, or a passport card to get BACK from Canada. If you don't have either, get the card. You can get it quickly enough (maybe) and it's cheaper.
  9. I had to defend a slam once in an open pairs event, and I had to guess whether declarer had started with two small in a suit or a singleton (and partner's signal was not helpful). Since he had bid blackwood I could trust that he didn't have two small in any suit, and should have known he had a singleton. After I got this wrong at the table and hung my head about it, the declarer very kindly taught me this lesson.
  10. One other thing to keep in mind is that you can use this on defense when playing against better players. If one of them makes a blackwood bid, you can count on them not having a suit without a second round control. In particular, they will not have xx of a suit.
  11. I've been recently noting that GIB frequently tries to lead its partner's suit. It even will lead dummy's suit in this attempt. I'd play small, expecting to try and pick up the heart suit. GIB will not usually lead its own 4 card suit when Dummy has advertised that suit as well, but will lead a doubleton or xxx when Dummy has that suit. Just some ideas I've been playing with recently, Ben
  12. This is probably well known, but it is not known to me. In the sequence: (1H)-1N-(P)-2D what is 2D when playing "systems on"? Is it to play? Is it a cuebid of some kind? Likewise in the sequence: (1S)-1N-(P)-2H what is 2H? Is it to rightside a heart contract? Is it a cuebid? Thanks for the thoughts.
  13. From Proprieties Law 75 C: When explaining the significance of partner's call or play in reply to an opponent's inquiry (see Law 20), a player shall disclose all special information conveyed to him through partnership agreement or partnership experience, but he need not disclose inferences drawn from his general knowledge and experience. So in particular, I think you are SUPPOSED to speculate if you have some experience reason to believe partner has something in mind.
  14. Einstein's "Relativity" was a really good read. Dense, but very well written (and short).
  15. fyp. To answer your question, I think that neither is standard in these systems without prior agreements.
  16. The word you are looking for is "grosvenor" (probably spelled wrong).
  17. Cute problem, hope I think of that at the table next time.
  18. Also what to do if you forget a convention and your partner alerts a bid you thought was natural. You did well on the hand in the story. Good story. Edit: Changed the accidentally egotistical "I" to the intended "you"
  19. Sorry, I was unclear. The problem is that time was called before the hand finished and a result was assigned. I was curious how this result is arrived at. Especially when there is still a guess for declarer to get right.
  20. This hand was played in an automated free individual event. The clock ran out with 2.5 tricks to play, and was resolved in favor of declarer guessing correctly: [hv=lin=pn|romonuke,shayna15,~~M19760,BunnyGo|st%7C%7Cmd%7C3S7H5QD259KC3689JK%2CS26TKH46JD78TACTQ%2CS48JQAH39TKAD34JC%2C%7Crh%7C%7Cah%7CBoard%201%7Csv%7Co%7Cmb%7C1H%7Cmb%7Cp%7Cmb%7C1N%7Cmb%7Cp%7Cmb%7C4S%7Cmb%7Cp%7Cmb%7C5H%7Cmb%7Cp%7Cmb%7C6H%7Cmb%7Cp%7Cmb%7Cp%7Cmb%7Cp%7Cpc%7CDQ%7Cpc%7CDK%7Cpc%7CDA%7Cpc%7CD3%7Cpc%7CD7%7Cpc%7CDJ%7Cpc%7CD6%7Cpc%7CD2%7Cpc%7CH3%7Cpc%7CH2%7Cpc%7CHQ%7Cpc%7CH4%7Cpc%7CC8%7Cpc%7CCT%7Cpc%7CH9%7Cpc%7CC2%7Cpc%7CSA%7Cpc%7CS3%7Cpc%7CS7%7Cpc%7CS2%7Cpc%7CSQ%7Cpc%7CS5%7Cpc%7CC3%7Cpc%7CSK%7Cpc%7CH6%7Cpc%7CHA%7Cpc%7CH7%7Cpc%7CH5%7Cpc%7CSJ%7Cpc%7CS9%7Cpc%7CC6%7Cpc%7CS6%7Cpc%7CS8%7Cpc%7CC4%7Cpc%7CCJ%7Cpc%7CST%7Cpc%7CCQ%7Cpc%7CD4%7Cpc%7CCA%7Cpc%7CCK%7Cpc%7CC7%7Cpc%7CC9%7C]400|300|[/hv] Note that if West pitches the diamond 8, then North has to guess if hearts are 1-1 or 2-0 at the end. Now that I look at the hand more closely, I realize that there is no misguessing (as pitching the spade 4 and finessing, or ruffing the Ten and playing for 1-1 both work). However, I'm interested in what would happen if the J and 8 of hearts were switched. Would the computer play double dummy?
  21. No I meant that since East made the first "bad bid" East derailed the auction first. The bid of 1D was fine.
  22. I agree with the two previous posters. If you are playing good/bad 2NT then 2NT is a good bid. Otherwise I bid 3C.
  23. I assume you were playing a standard 2/1? I personally don't like the bids 2NT, 3C, or 3NT. So I guess that makes it 75-25 East (2-1 for # of bids I don't like and a bonus for the first bid in the auction that I don't like). I think Easts second bid should be 2D or 2S (depending on whether 2S shows extra strength) to better show shape. After 3C it's a must that East show shape better than just 3NT. After 2NT, I think West will do better to bid diamonds and show 4 cards than clubs again to show a 6th club. It's still possible that East is 3=3=5=2 after the 2NT bid, and diamonds could be a great strain to play in.
  24. 1N-2C 2D-3H(smolen) 3N-4N 6N or 1N-2C 2D-3H(smolen) 3N-4N 6C (choice of slam)-Pass
