  1. Instead of just bidding 6S directly, I'd consider bidding 5C voidwood on the way to 6S--If I hear 5S (2 w/o queen) as the response, I may bid 7 and hope the opponents don't lead clubs--and that we aren't missing the A of spades somehow.
  2. Please read the entire thread. In particular, MrAce already explained above "why". I see no reason to question every person who agrees with him that North is 100% to blame (and yes, South has additional blame on top of it) to elaborate on all the same reasons every time. I too think North is 100% to blame. I refer you to MrAce's post to explain "why" for myself and every other person who thinks the same way and does not explain further. Furthermore, Free didn't say that you wrote said things, but that he Fixed Your Post (FYP). It is his way of not so subtly reminding you that a large majority of this forum would appreciate fewer symbols--just as we appreciate when people DO NOT WRITE ALL IN CAPS and do not use excessive and abusive symbols!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  3. Maybe I should start another thread, but I'm curious what "reasonable methods" are. Could you elaborate?
  4. Wow! that's great. I'd heard of it, but didn't know how to do it.
  5. While I normally support with support...in particular I like to tell partner when I know what the trump suit is, in this case I'd like to describe the nice secondary feature of my hand so that partner can make an informed decision later (or so I can...my hand is gold if he raises me in hearts). I'd have loved if the opps bid 2♦ so I could make a 3♥ fit jump, but unless I'm playing 3♥ as a fit jump, then I'll just bid 2.
  6. The weirdest error for me was that sometimes one of the voices would stop working (and I was able to confirm that it was still working for other people) and the only way I could get it back would be to log out and log on again. Other than that, the voice, setup, and commentary were wonderful.
  7. Doesn't cuebidding the heart show a lack of concern about clubs? In particular, if North had xx or xxx of clubs, shouldn't he just sign off? So cannot South conclude that clubs are taken care of and make another try? I'm not saying South's hand is worth another try, I'm just trying to understand the related situation with cuebidding.
  8. Bill Gates is funding the Seattle NABC, so it only makes sense...
  9. It would also be way too easy for a NS pair to cheat and not get caught.
  10. If you wish to read up on such a system, I'd recommend Berkowitz's book "Precision Today". I believe it has this as one of the variants.
  11. If you play that it is exactly 3 card support with a 4333 hand and GF pts, then it is alertable. In fact the box on the ACBL card that should be marked is the "3nt" special meaning box.
  12. 1. Not really, but I might be w/r if I'm feeling frisky. 2. I'll win the A, play spade to the K and diamond back to the K. I'm playing for 10 tricks (I'll lose the Q of H, the A of D and A of C). This is worse than cashing out 9 tricks only if the A of D is in the East and Q of hearts in the West. 3. Probably not at your club at matchpoints. If he can make 12 tricks, then it's probably a top anyways. That said, I don't hate a 4NT bid, but I don't like stretching so much at matchpoints. With 14 flat points and 5 hearts 12 tricks is probably hard to come by. If he has Kx, KQxxx, Kxx, Kxx and hearts 3-3 then 12 is on one of a couple finesses or squeezes, but I'd rather just be in 3NT and outplay the other tables.
  13. Some people also play that jump cue bids are intermediate raises.
  14. The general rule of thumb is that when your partner is unpassed and you have an opening strength hand, just open...don't pre-empt.
  15. It doesn't look completely unlike a winkle either.
  16. More so, I don't understand why anyone would consider this a violation of trust or privacy. If you receive a letter, e-mail, phone mail, PM or other message then it is yours to do with as you see fit (except use as blackmail). If you don't want something you said to be public, then make sure the person you message is a friend--otherwise, don't say it!
  17. Most people do not play that 4NT is any key card bid on this auction. It would simply be a "two or more places to play" bid asking partner to pick a suit.
  18. 5H would have been the winning bid. It only goes down 1 (as opposed to 5SX= at the other table). The 4S bidder (of course) had 8 spades, heart void and a 15 HCP hand (not counting the void) with good controls. My partner had Qxxx, AKQ, xxx, Axxx. I (of course) left the double in.
  19. This hand came up in a side game in Toronto at a BAM: You hold: Void, J987542, 983, JT8 R vs W. RHO deals and bids 4S (4S)-P-(P)-X (P)-?? What now? Edit: We play that this double shows points and is not takeout oriented (we are of course *allowed* to take it out)
  20. My teammates came back from a swiss event and informed me of an unusual sequence their opponents had had. We were unable to figure out what the bids should mean in a 2/1 structure: 1S-1N (Forcing) 2S-3D 3H-4C 4S
  21. Not really. The system swings came from right/wrong siding on their weak notrump. My partnership never ended up playing them (they chose a different partnership in the first quarter, and we were so happy with the setup we left it that way). The match was entirely decided by card play, opening leads and the like.
  22. Won that match, but got KO'd today in the round of 8.
  23. As it turns out, their openings were 15+ with 1C just to compensate for this GCC issue (I had tried to figure out their system from online references but was a little off). The director at the game said: 1) If it was 14+ it would be disallowed to bid transfer responses. 2) Since it was 15+ they could do what they wanted. Thanks for the responses, they were very helpful, now time to sleep.
  24. Ok, thank you. Sorry that I had not provided all the necessary details to this point. I'll ask the directors just to be sure, but I understand now the situation. Thank you for your suggested defenses as well.
  25. It seems that the "weak" meaning is a sound opening (14+ HCP) with 5+ clubs.
