  1. Using the flash version, on Safari on OS X.4.11 I cannot type in any character script except roman, central european, or cyrillic. Any font that is in unicode, or oriental I can *paste* and BBO accepts the characters, and they send just fine, but I cannot type them. This sounds like it might be a pretty unique bug.
  2. This is why you and I had the agreement that no competitive auction against that opponent could be passed out at any level. We either doubled (and took faith that they gave tricks to the defense) or bid on. Since the bidding was so random, we were usually just trying to protect ourselves from complete randomness. Ah well...that table is where bridge goes to die. Tough luck. I like Brian's acronym for this hand.
  3. This auction is very much related to a similar question recently posted here. http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/forum/5-beginner-and-intermediate-bridge-discussion/ You'll note I even advocated the psych when you suspect that your opponents are unprepared for it.
  4. no, you can raise with 3 card support here. 2♠ shows support, and (I believe) double is penalty oriented.
  5. Sorry, I just want to be sure I understand. I want to have everything still be in English, but be able to type in another language. This isn't supported either?
  6. Oh, ho, ho, irony! Oh, no, no, we don't get that here. See, uh, people ski topless here while smoking dope, so irony's not really a, a high priority. We haven't had any irony here since about, uh, '83, when I was the only practitioner of it. And I stopped because I was tired of being stared at.
  7. Is this another abbreviation I don't know, or is it the sound I imagine goes through your head when I see your eyes fume at the table?
  8. That's great! can you do King Lear's "Blow Winds" rant?
  9. LOL! Always the correct answer, and I learned a new word!
  10. Yeah, I agree (with our off-forum discussion). Nice catch.
  11. who are you playing with these days? 1) Certainly not worth a move in AA. Whether it is in general, I'm tempted by the nicely fitting hands, but I'm concerned the tricks may be "too slow". I think he needs AQ of spades, AK of clubs, and stuff. I dunno, I think I'll not worry about missing this slam. 2) I'll pass. My hand is a lot of slow tricks that seem better for defense. Not that I'll necessarily set this, but every time I tried to write "bid 3♠ aiming for -1" I thought, all those losers I have, and they'd be tricks on defense. 3) Partner couldn't hit this? I'm not sure I'll get any hearts tricks, but I figure to get 1, even on this auction. I have a diamond trick, and wth, I'll double.
  12. better now. Do you enter these with the hand editor, or just type them in?
  13. This sequence came up today with another forum regular. I said I'd post it to ask the consensus as we disagreed about the "standard" meaning of this auction playing a basic 2/1. 1S-2C 3C-3N 4C What's 4C? We agreed about the rest of the auction, but I said I'd post here to ask about the consensus for the 4C bid. Followup question from the other regular, "over 3NT if 4C isn't Gerber, I have no other way to ask about Aces." If it is not gerber, how could one ask for aces? Do people play this as minorwood here if they play minorwood?
  14. Ben, you should also correct the last bid so that East doesn't bid 4 spades.
  15. Would the ten spot be a better signal to partner, or should a low heart work just as well?
  16. FYP 1) This was not a difficult problem. 2) When you got the answer wrong, Mike did you the courtesy of (IMO) clearly and patiently attempting to teach you (note that in my previous post, I did not do you the same courtesy). Note that he does not benefit from this, nor do I imagine your responses give him any satisfaction. 3) There are no merits to a 1NT bid here. There's the discussion. 4) At this point the rest of the board is only interested in the same manner that we occasionally enjoy rubbernecking accidents. 5) I strongly suggest that you consider attempting to play with better partners. If you feel that you cannot trust your current partners to bid well enough that you can afford to actually make an honest descriptive bid, then either you or they are the problem. Probably both. Bridge (and in particular bidding and defense) is a partnership effort. Regularly making bids that are far off of system and description (no matter the expected length of suits...that's a red herring that ignores both variance and more importantly partner's intelligence) ruin that effort. Even if you get lucky on a hand, it will ruin the trust necessary to have regular constructive auctions. Sincerely, Ben
  17. [hv=pc=n&s=sat832h753dq76c54&w=h4dk3c2&n=s4h8d9c3&e=s9h9dajt8542ck986&d=w&v=e&b=16&a=1np3nppp&p=h8h9h7h4d2d6dkd9d3s4dad7dtdqc2c3]399|300|UDCA[/hv] CLICK NEXT TO SEE THE PLAY UNTIL THE FIRST ACTUAL DECISION Ok, I think that until you win the diamond queen, there is nothing to do. You give upside-down count at trick one, and then follow suit and try to look nonplussed about the diamond queen until it's too late for declarer. Now what?
  18. I'm there. edit: I am getting picked up sometime around an hour from now.
  19. Normal or not, I understood it at the time. Dunno if it's the agreement that experts (or even good) players would have in a situation, but I think that when pitching a suit that has nothing more to be said about it (except that you want to pitch it) SP is a nice default.
  20. I will bid 3♦ as a natural game try. There are many hands partner could have where game is on. I just need a trump honor, diamond help (either shortness or queen) and one other useful card (a black A would be nice or a second trump honor).
  21. Does that mean you meant to vote for "Takeout, and I don't know what expert standard is"?
  22. Out of curiosity, what was the auction? For some reason my computer has decided to stop running these specific videos. I need to steal my wife's laptop every time I want to watch one.
