place the contract
BunnyGo replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
This is true. This is false. Bid on when you know what partners hand is. The way Art has described it, every 5m response to blackwood cannot be followed up by 5NT. When you're the one who knows what's going on, don't be afraid to bid. -
It'd be amusing to actually bid 2C-2D 7D with a hand not completely inappropriate for it, just to see the look on partner's face.

A defensive situation

Got it. I'm calling him Timo or Mista from now on. -

I don't understand. Why Ace? Sounds like we agree that declarer has another club. -
Defensive Play THIRTEEN
BunnyGo replied to BunnyGo's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Yes, that is true. It's also true that the more B/I problem would have been partner's at trick one. Sadly, this was the hand. I didn't think to modify it. Next time... -

A triple squeeze is a squeeze in three suits that gets you a trick {sometimes more}, a progressive squeeze is a triple squeeze that when you cash your new trick squeezes the victim again for another trick.

Be nice, that was a thoughtful, well written post. While I don't agree with his conclusion, it's an honest post that raises reasonable points. On that note, VM, there's one main reason I don't agree with your conclusion. The double is simply meant to give partner the chance to do something good. I believe that more often than not he'll leave the double in when we'll set it, and he'll bid when we'll make something, and the times when neither is possible is, oh well, then we're hopefully getting a cheap sac against 3S making. In fact, most of the time I disagree with you seems not to be in your ability to analyze the deal from your hand, but that I think you don't appreciate all the ways to utilize your partner's input in the auction. Just my two cents on the pattern of when we disagree.

Defensive Play THIRTEEN
BunnyGo replied to BunnyGo's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I'm now realizing I probably should have presented the defensive problem from partner's point of view at trick one. At the table, my partner thought "great, my hearts will be set up because the holes are filled. With three hearts in dummy no way declarer will not hold up till the third round, and I can overtake the next trick." This is a nice example hand where realizing a quick switch is needed is good B/I defense. The hand as presented is probably INT+, but it seems that every poster so far has figured it out. -
Yeah, I was. Thanks for taking the bait.

This. Although, a quick amusing story. My grandfather used to be an excellent player, but later in life his memory (especially for bidding) wasn't there. He did bid 2NT on a hand like this, and I didn't give up on it not being "unusual" until we were in 4NT. Every other table stopped in 3NT -1. Grandpa made 4NT, showing he could still play cards.

You did indeed play this hand (you were East). -
Defensive Play THIRTEEN
BunnyGo replied to BunnyGo's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
As close as I can recall, this was the hand and play to the first few tricks. -
This hand occurred in a side game at the Boston Nationals a couple years ago (the hands are the same give or take some spots). I think this is our first Matchpoint defensive problem, where one has to consider overticks just as much as setting the hand. [hv=pc=n&s=h84cq3&w=sqj5hq3dkqt854c94&n=s763ha72dj93cak62&e=h96c85&d=e&v=e&b=6&a=p1c1d2dp2sp3hd3nppp&p=hqh2h6h4h3hah9h8c2c8cqc4c3c9cac5]399|300[/hv] CLICK NEXT TO SEE THE FIRST FEW TRICKS. Being a good partner, you obeyed the double and led a heart. What's your plan now? Be specific. You and partner were playing UDCA.

well that deal generator

Grover's algorithm is a searching algorithm. It'd help you find a specific deal in the list of all deals, but I don't understand how it would help generate deals faster. -
Ah, sorry. Didn't realize that it was different on the download version. Sorry to say that they've announced they won't be updating the download version. If you care to try the flash online version, what I said above is true.

Defensive Play TWELVE
BunnyGo replied to inquiry's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
The moral of the story (for me at least) is to always pay attention to the contract. I was defending 3NT, and only just now realized it. -
Recap of Defensive Plays ONE - TWELVE
BunnyGo replied to inquiry's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I was trying to think of some. The next couple hands I was thinking of posting were definitely Int/Adv. I was actually starting to think that most defense problems are not "beginner". I think of beginner as not taking a practice finesse. Counting tricks, etc. But a lot of these problems are more difficult when your partner's hand is hidden. Maybe a hand finessing against dummy is beginner? Maybe one that requires overtaking trick 1 for an "obvious" switch that needs to be done now? Is ducking trick 1 at NT to maintain communications beginner? In some sense, I think all of them are, but in another it's harder to visualize the other hands on defense. Maybe executing a pumping defense? That's beginner. Not getting confused about ruffing while trying to pump. Just some thoughts. -
Welcome to the forums. You do realize all this is already implemented. You can set the table requirements to 95% completion (or less if you prefer).

well that deal generator

You have to then remove the rotational symmetries, but that's just a /4 at the end...Unless you count the same hand but rotated as different. There are also dealer and vulnerability issues, but I didn't consider those. -

A good point, I was discussing "deals". -
Or what should we do? Partner was saddled with this problem online a few minutes ago. IMPs, unknown but seemingly competent opps. [hv=pc=n&w=saqt9843ha83dtck4&d=n&v=e&b=9&a=pp1h1s4hpp]133|200[/hv] Agree with 1♠ I hope? What now?
