1) Who doubles with that garbage suit, and garbage hand? Is West really aiming for the case where East has KJx or Ax(x) and needs help (under)leading it? That seems a really small target. West 100% 2) Who doesn't lead the club with the Ace around and a diamond splinter? Set up your tricks. East 30%--you should still listen to partner. East at least seemed to have a thought when doing his error. The double only gave East a wrong option.

I'll admit that while writing "4H" above, I did think, "hmm, we may have a double fit--if partner has all the controls in hearts and clubs, then things could be good. I wonder if there is a bid showing a mild slam try and this double fit." Then I decided that my hand is barely that good since my aces are in short suits and partner needs to have a near perfect hand and the length in clubs--just bid 4H.

Some people play with the agreement that: "if any double has been made or left in as a penalty double, then all future doubles are automatically penalty." I like this agreement (occasionally with modifications for specific circumstances) and would apply it here. However, if my partner wanted to exempt this (or similar) auctions from that rule, then I'd play it as takeout.

I still nominate Phil as a crazy one.

Actually, that's Hammurabi as the "eye for an eye" and it's the Jewish bible that's "don't do unto others what you would find hateful done to you."

Ok, I'm bumping this thread again. Bridge base forums is now spreading, which is again great, but there are a bunch of posts now in (what I think is) Japanese, which I can't read. I'd like to modify my link above to mark the chinese and japanese forums as read when I come to BBForums so that they don't appear on my "read new content". Does anybody know how I can modify the link above to mark both forumid=63 and forumid=65 as read? The first couple guesses I made didn't work.

No. No reason to pre-empt partner, and while I did think about 2♦ and 1♦ both are big enough lies with only lead directing upside that I don't see the reason to.
