Overcalling 1NT
bill1157 replied to jgillispie's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
playing X as takeout (suggesting majors) and suit bids natural works just fine. -
Yes, but easiest is just to get the hand record, duplicate the boards, wait a week and then use them. I don't remember them that long unless I have played them anyway. But, of course it is technically better to have not seen the deals before playing them!
-
Yes, that is what I am trying to do. Now if you can get that program on an android...
-
The difference is: I want to play the deals I duplicate, so anything that makes it harder for me to visualize the hands is a plus. and I want to avoid paying $400 for a handydup. If further encryption is needed, perhaps the program could generate 6 piles and re-integrate 4 of them into 2 at the end...
-
I noticed that the handydup can work with un-barcoded cards, if they are arranged A♠to2♣. Could the same be done with an android app? it opens a pbn file then shows where the first 4 cards go, then you hit a button, it shows where the next 4 go etc.

100% to south. south should be pleased to pass out 2♠
-
Actually, the point is: someone used her head to came up with an off-beat, but excellent solution to a difficult problem.
-
Actually, pass is an excellent action on this hand! very well thought out. I would score the bids: 2♣-10,Pass-8,1NT-6
-
I don't see why 2♣ be a game force: i think 2/1 is gf over a major opening (if you are playing 2/1gf...) I suppose if you do play 1NT as forcing, you would need a 1♥ response as artificial. So: 2♣ for me...

A few questions
bill1157 replied to phil_20686's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Would NMF be necessary in this auction? The situation is totally different from the case where opener rebids 1NT since over the 2NT rebid, new suits would be forcing anyway and therefore don't need to be artificial. Bill -
I would think 6♠ would be a much better overcall. I have tried slow playing in a goulash and it just never works. Did you think you would get to play 4♠? going further, I would open 5♠ on a hand that i might open 4♠ in standard bridge, since they are bidding to the 5 level anyway. Bill

another question on when an alert is necessary
bill1157 replied to bill1157's topic in Laws and Rulings
I am in the ACBL. so the above would apply. It looks to me like an alert would be nice but not mandatory. The bid is not a "weak bid that sounds strong" and is probably close enough to the expected meaning. To require an alert would be tantamount to requiring that all unsound bidding sequences be alerted! -
another question on when an alert is necessary
bill1157 replied to bill1157's topic in Laws and Rulings
yes, obviously I should have said 1♦-1♠//2♥...for the precision auction. sry :( -
In a club game last thursday, this auction came up, with our side silent: 1C-1S//2H-P. The director said the 2H should be alerted since it was non-forcing (opps got a good score btw). 2 questions: should the bid be alerted (in a precision auction, I don't think it would be alerted) I understand that the director can have his own standards on what is alerted, but shouldn't they be posted somewhere? thanks, Bill

i have the same problem with my acer tablet (android honeycomb). got on just fine, played a few games, now it does what you are describing when i try to enter password, only on bridgebase! Bill

Best is if the player(s) being "taught" can respond with an effective, non-combative response. s(he)-they should let the "teacher" know that s(he)-they aren't that interested in the legal aspect of the game!

do you open 1 Spade with this hand?
bill1157 replied to bill1157's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I know this is probably true, but it sure seems too restrictive. Why couldn't it also show a weak 2 with most of the strength outside the suit? -
do you open 1 Spade with this hand?
bill1157 replied to bill1157's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I wasn't necessarily in favor of opening 1♠, but was interested as to whether that was a serious option. People do, after all, open with 9 points sometimes with something like: AJxxx.Axxxxx.x.xx. I suppose that hand has two places to play etc. so maybe it is better for 1S versus the hand in question. Having opened 1S, you would not jump to 4S on the second round obviously. Bill -
do you open 1 Spade with this hand?
bill1157 replied to bill1157's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
So: if you were r/w would you open 3♠ then? -
do you open 1 Spade with this hand?
bill1157 replied to bill1157's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
My partner opened 3♠ with this hand and I passed with: ♠ 8 2 ♥ K 7 5 2 ♦ A K Q 10 6 ♣ J 5 so I guess the next question is: if partner opens 3♠ do you raise to 4 with this hand (same conditions, MP's)? -
All this discussion tells me that we should do away with stop cards and forbid anyone saying: "skip bid please wait" or the like. The stop card regulations (waiting 10 seconds,6 seconds,or whatever) is not followed and is unrealistic.

I might have opened 2♠...

After the last time I misplayed a hand after claiming and having the claim rejected, I claim, then if it is rejected, I call the director and have him(her) make a ruling. Bill
