No you are not. Noone who posts so many questions, baring their potential mistakes for all the world to see and risking looking like an <insult> could possibly be described as too sensitive. I bet there are many B/I lurkers who would like to post, but do not have the nerve. They could not tolerate being told they are wrong; that they made a mistake; that they are unworthy. Those lurkers are grateful to you. And even if some of the questions are repeated, it is new to the new lurker. Absolutely right SoTired. Count me among those grateful lurkers. Please continue posting JillyBean.

I dunno Han. These thread titles... :)

I'm bidding on. 4S could easily be making here. I don't really expect to have a slam on but 4NT rkcb it is.
-
Why can you not stand a 3♣ raise, don't you have an easy 3NT bid? I would expect my partner to raise to 3♣ on a good 8 count with 4 clubs.

What does partner have?
nick_s replied to Trinidad's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Do you think that partner should bid like that, unfavorable at IMPs with an 18-19 balanced behind him? Rik Well, no I don't. Sorry, I wasn't paying enough attention to the vulnerability. Perhaps something more distributional than my example. My point was that I would expect the spade suit to be too weak for a weak 2 or a dutch 2. -
For me this is very close between 2♣ and 2♦. I chose 2♦ because I can't stand a raise to 3♣. Make the hand very slightly stronger - enough to convert 3♣ to 3NT, and I think 2♣ is the better call. Edit to fix symbols.

What does partner have?
nick_s replied to Trinidad's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I'd expect partner to have about 10-11 points with a weak 5 card spade suit and short diamonds. Maybe something like 10xxxx KQx xx KQx. -
:) I did a couple of searches before posting, but I guess I searched for the wrong things. A search through DrTodd13's previous postings uncovered this thread: http://forums.bridgebase.com/index.php?showtopic=21012 Evidently there was an even earlier request for this feature, but I can't find it.

I'm fixed. 2S might work out... 2Hx might work out... and so might 3NT. Who says partner has to have a minimum? If RHO doesn't have an outside entry, this might even come in. We play direct denies so: 2N (leb) followed by 3N.
-
Fair point... and you're no worse off than you were before. OTOH, suppose you /do/ find another regular partnership to play against. There's no way do this right now - unless you already know the people involved and invite them to a game.
-
This isn't really pertinent to the question, and I'm no expert, but... Assuming I respond at all, I'd respond 1♥ on this instead of 1♠. The reason being that I'm not planning on making a rebid, and this way we don't lose a 5-4 heart fit if pard isn't strong enough to reverse.
-
I'd like an option to find another pair to play against. What often seems to happen is that my partner and I create a table in the main bridge club, then wait for other players to show up. We then spend a couple of hours playing while various opponents of varying ability and varying seriousness switch in and out. I'd like to be able to request another pair to play against instead of a couple of random singles. I think you could accomplish this by having a sign-up sheet for pairs that want to play against another pair.

If I am reading this table correctly, the number on the left is the number of tricks taken, and the number on the right is the number of times. Right? Please explain your conclusion that it is worth "exploring" a heart fit, or that Hearts made more than spades 158/1000. Because I sure dont see the same thing. Assuming my math is right, spades took 10+ tricks a total of 911 times out of 1000 or 91.1% of the time. Hearts tooks 10+ tricks a total of 558 times out of 1000 or 55.8%. (For 9+ tricks the numbers are 98.2% vs. 67.6%) Hmmm, lets see. 91.1% vs. 55.8%, this is a no-brainer for spades, imo. Following on: I guess what I'd really like to know is when hearts was a better contract than spades, when the same, and when worse etc. I'm asking a lot, I know. :)

I think Wayne pretty much nailed the answer to your original question. Just out of curiosity: what was your double? Support? Whether it was or not, I think it should show a non-minimum and may have contributed to your getting too high.
-
Well, let's ignore the hand above, and whether it's worth an invite or not. What is the difference between: pass - 1♥ - 2♥ and pass - 1♥ - 2♣ - 2♦ - 2♥ and pass - 1♥ - 2♣ - 2♦ - 3♥? I guess I should have just asked the question I really wanted answered. :)

[hv=d=n&v=n&n=sxxhakxdjxxc10xxxx&s=sakxhj97xxxdaxxcx]133|200|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Opponents silent: pass - 1♥ - 2♥ - pass We're playing 2/1. 1NT is semi-forcing by a passed hand and 2C is rev Drury. Not sure who is really at fault here - maybe both of us. In the port-mortem I (South) claimed that pard should have gone through reverse Drury (2♣-2♦-2♥) to show a good raise to 2♥. Since he hadn't done this, I didn't make a game try. Pard claimed that using Drury alway promised a limit raise and he didn't have one. In retrospect, I've no idea where I got this idea about Drury from, and I've since apologized. This still bugs me though, and it still seems like a good idea (to me anyway). Is this a common treatment or should using Drury always promise a limit raise?

Advanced Bridge Lessons
nick_s replied to Richardrls's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Hi Richard, I'm not sure where the 2 over 1 club is on BBO. I found a private club called 'The 2/1 Study Group Bridge Club' but the notice at the entrance said: 'This club is NOT accepting applications for membership...'. I tried anyway, but have not received a response. Help would be appreciated. Thanks, Nick -
very interseting hand !

1. a 2. a 3. b 4. a 5. a 6. No - unless playing with a novice 7. jtfanclub has this right for me: At pairs B, at teams A 8. a - I'm not confident I know all the options and even if I were, I wouldn't want to try convincing the opponents that I did indeed know them. 9. a - but I don't play tournaments on BBO 10. yes If I'm not 100% comfortable with my actions, I wind up thinking about what I should have done for several hands afterwards. It's my higher power's way of letting me know I screwed up.

Acol: Opener's third bid
nick_s replied to helene_t's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I would play both 3♣ and s♦ as game forcing. 3♦ would imply nothing in clubs - probably a stiff, and at least Hx in diamonds. I would bid 3♣ because I want partner to bid 3NT with Hxx in clubs and an otherwise suitable hand. If I bid 3♦, I would only expect partner to bid 3NT if he thought there was a decent chance of making the contract opposite a stiff club. -

Hi Richard, This sounds perfect for me - although I'm not exactly sure what Disciplined Standard American is. I'm a recovering Acol-ite trying to restart my bridge game in the US. The problem is that I can't make either Monday session. Would I still be welcome on Wednesdays? Thanks, Nick -
I wouldn't bid 4NT since I play this as takeout for all 3 suits - particularly hearts. I thought this was the standard treatment over 4♠. Am I wrong about this? I would double.
-
You can also play the card in tempo and then not turn it face down while you think. ...not that this has anything much to do with the question asked (sorry!), but it gets you around the potential UI problems associated with playing the card face down. ...or is there some problem with doing this that I'm unaware of?
-
I vote for pass as the worst bid. North is easily worth another move.
-
Wow! Great problem. Thanks for sharing.
