can't see any other bid but X :P even at red V white because "It's NOW or never "(to quote Elvis totally outside bridge and irrevelant ;) ) seriously IF you don't X with a decent 14 count how do you ever bid anything? -- you don't have a decent suit of you own  AND you have at LEAST 3 card support for any suit P might be forced to bid if LHO passes WTP ??? ;)

I don't think that penalty doubles of this type should have to be prealerted (because then there would be SO many things on prealert that it might take AGES to list them all :P ) HOWEVER it is my belief that all calls have to be alerted if they convey information which is contrary to the "USUAL" meaning of the bid -- which in this case I believe is 'usually' negative  I am surprised that you felt it necessary to ask what the double was though -- did you have any suspicion that it WAS for penalties??

Pass
-
3♦ showing a good ♦ suit and more than minimum opening --- P can still rebid a good ♠ suit if he has one
-
I agree  I too would pass
-
1. for me not worth mucking around with my system (Precision) as I have sufficient to remember anyway  2. NO
-
I pass wtp?
-
I pass

who missed slam?

WHY open 4♠ (ESPECIALLY in 1st position)when you have perfectly good 1♠ opener ?????  It's almost impossible for partner to bid over the "weak" 8 card prempt  -
Competing with Partner (off-topic)
bearmum replied to Finch's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
WHY should one be on COMPETITION with P??  surely it should be a GREAT thing if as a PARTNERSHIP you can bid (and make) 7NT  In a 'Regional' competition a few years ago (where we were in the LOWEST flight because we had only just moved to the USA) -- I opened (playing Precision ) 1♦(11-55 2+♦) and my P bid 7NT ( he had 22 points and a SOLID SEVEN card spade suit ) :P The really funny thing was when the director of our flight asked HOW we got to the (unbeatable) 7NT and I told her -- she informed me that SOME of the TOP flight didn't bid it!!!!!!!! -
This also depends on your style. My style is that a 1NT rebid shows exactly 2 or 3 spades, not 1. So then partner will often sign off in 2♠ if he has 5. Wrongsiding may be an issue but you will rarely have a pure suit-oriented hand like the one shown. In many situations you have some suits that you want to have led from your left and some that you want to have led from your right. Too much fear to bid NT because you then have to play it from your side is also not good. As usual, there are two sides to everything  WOW I agree Gerben ---- if P has a 5CM I really hope s/he will rebid it

What to do until the next board comes up?
bearmum replied to 42's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Yikes! LOL -
OK my 2¢ worth  1. Assuming the 1NT overcall means 15-18 (and WE are playing SAYC or 2/1)I would ONLY double if I had a hand which would have bid 1♦ 1X 2NT(showing 18-19 I believe??) AND after this type of auction I rely on PARTNER to play me for a STRONG NT and transfer me with a REALLY weak hand unsuitable to defend 1NTX (using whatever system we had agreed over a 'normal' 1NT opener)
-
I dpoble -- mainly because I have 2♦ and only a minimum hand for my previous bidding. :P
-
ermmm... there's no need to reply quite in that way... you have already got an immediate answer giving the auction in detail. The bit that you missed was in the write-up saying "unopposed auction, starting North" OOPS sorry I guess I would have said the auction went " P 1S P ---------------- etc" Forgive me for posting
-
1. NO I don't think this is a 2♣ (game force I presume) bid B) ESPECIALLY if playing 2♦ waiting (rather than step [or control]responses ) 2. Not relevant because I don't think u should have opened 2♣ I would have opened 1♣ then over pards 1♥ reverse to 2♦ Then P bids 2♠ (showing longer ♥ than ♠ I would expect 6/5 or he would just repeat ♥'s) 3. P 's 4♠ bid SAID "I HAVE 6/5 ♥/♠ bid P and sufficient points to override your 3NT 4. IMHO the TOTAL blame should go to NORTH for opening 2♣ initally  B) :(
-
The total auction makes NO sense to me as W was the opening bidder -- and presumably passed?? AFTER W passed and N bid 1♠ I am assuming that E alerted the 1NT overcall as "6-10 with 5/4 minors" ?? If that happened WHY did S bid 2♦??? IMHO with the bidding as quoted ALL the players were COMPLETE beginners and asking what level you need to play at the table is SILLY but I guess as usual I am missing something ????? and will never get an answer as these boards seem to be only for the regulars to talk to one another :P :) :P
-
I STILL don't believe that ACBL (or any other Country's system) would allow BBO (or any other online site) to run tourneys where players can accumuate "ACBL" (or any other Country's points) Cos it's TOO easy to 'talk' to partner online (by whatever method you prefer) and get a good result BUT MAYBE it's all to do with collecting MONEY???????(WOW can I be so crass?? ):) :P :P I think post might be censored
-
I would overcall 3♥ as we are green V red :)
-
Only in some states. LOL :P B)
-
well I would prefer to open ANYTHING but 1NT with S hand ---- but then I am a consertive bidder B)
-
I don't think there is a "scientific" way to bid the GS BUT I will bid 6♠over the 3♣ prempt
-
I will PASS 2♥ because I don't figure we have game on so prefer to play in possible 4/3 fit rather than play ♦'s at 3 level

ITA -- if Justin agrees to keep score - for goodness sake ALL of us folk who parcipitate should NOT complain on whatever scoring Justin decides to do -- UNLESS you are prepared to take the job (and the complaints) on Believe me I LOVE trying to get a good 'score' but will participate whatever the scoring method is -- just for the fun of it
