Curtis is a very close friend+ a mainstay for us for our Juniors. There has never been a time when I have asked him to play at our Juniors Teaching Table on Wednesday &, if available, he wld ever turn me down!! Our thoughts & prayers are with him in this very sad moment, Valerie

We have decided to allow Multi at our Tuesday Tourneys, but not BSC,s, HUM's, & other odd conventions (read: forcing pass as an opening bid) As far as scheduling, we try to accomodate a world-wide membership, where, in some parts of the world it is some ungodly hr of the night. Yes, we do get a lot of American players as well as players from all parts of the world. Our players range in ages from 8-26 and of disparate levels of play. Judging by the saber-rattling on these boards for the past couple days, we are not neanderthals, have a total grip of what is going on in bridge and are trying to run a program tailored to more than 2,000 members, which, as you may not know, we do totally pro bono. Nor do the WC's & Hall-of -Famers that play every Wednesday at our Teaching Table get compensated! Valerie Westheimer :)

Well, after all this hullabaloo, I really feel I must weigh in here. First of all, MtV took my comment a bit out of context, wihtout all the other parts to it. HWG: They did not allow Multi at the Cavendish Invitational Tournament and there was an article in one of the Daily Bulletins by Leckie excoriating it. They do not allow Multi at most ACBL events or the Trials. When they have allowed Multi they let us bring 20 pages of Defenses to the table that we can look at during the auction! We have been back & forth w/this more times than you all know &, quite frankly, this is a no-brainer for us. Just because a few players (pairs) wld like to use Multi, we do not want to be shouted down by the (vocal) minority, when we are trying to help the majority. We are trying to get young people interested in the game, not discourage them from playing due to arcane & tedious systems to prepare against. We are attempting to teach them bridge: how to think, how to count a hand, the logic behind bidding, etc. KFay's reference to our Teaching Table I do not quite understand. If he means that Fulvio, Benito, Curtis, Bob Hamman as well as a panoply of our distinguished other Hall-of-Famers & World Champions do not want to teach the Juniors Multi out of ignorance, well that is silly. When Juniorsbbo was started, there were rules that were set down & 1 of them was that we did not allow Multi, Therefore, we did not think it necessary to keep repeating it. The purpose of Lynn's Coaching Program is to teach you all how to think, in all areas of the game. We want to keep the bidding real simple (KISS), so as to not defeat our purpose. That is not to say that, as you progress, you cannot add your own personal touches w/yr favorite partner(s) If you have any questions about ANY bridge topic, Lynn has volunteered to answer them. She also has readily available any information on conventions, as well as defenses to them. Her e-mail is: lynn@lynndeas.com Valerie (vdoubleu) :D

Hi all :) Thx for yr posts & suggestions. We have discussed different start times for our Tues. Tourney &, at present, it is under consideration. Bearing in mind that we are trying to cater to a worldwide community of players, all on different time zones, we, in no way, want to exclude Americans ;) Looking forward to seeing you all at our events, Valerie Westheimer

After reading a lot of the comments over the past several days, I would just like to remind all of you, before you get in a twist, that this clearly is a problem that should be addressed. Now, perhaps, some of you have some other suggestions about how the League should go about it. Then why not mention those, rather than ranting about what you might do w/o the use of yr cell for several hrs. They are trying their best to deal with something that few of us would care to even acknowledge exists: cheating. Yes, I realize that if players want to cheat, they will find all sorts of ways to do it. Valerie Westheimer :)

Unqualified Vugraph Commentators
vdoubleu replied to rogerclee's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
As a Vu-Graph Commentator, I might repeat what some of the previous posters have already stated as well as adding a few. We are appealing to an audience of disparate abilities. Often, I will make a comment that needs clarification: i.e. "Declarer will eventually strip hand, and 'end' East" ....or "This is clearly a case of the STA (Striped-tailed ape) striking again":) I, personally, try to take the time to expatiate on the themes, time permitting. Also, most VG Commentators that I know personally try to respond to as many questions & comments from the specs as is possible. Also, it is often difficult to get a full grasp on all the varied systems the players are using spur-of-the-moment. Rest assured, every Commentator is trying his or her best & am sure, at least speaking for myself, wld welcome all comments, even criticisms:-) VDOUBLEU :P -
