We know Lefty is 5+♠ 0 ♥ 1♦ 2+♣ - 8 cards and Righty 5-♠ 2♥ 1♦ 2+♣ - 10 cards now Lefty did'nt make a two suited overcall so I reckon he is more likely to be 6034 than 5035 or 6025 so I finesse West for the other honour and I suppose vacant spaces makes it more likely it's with West? Steve PS Be gentle just a BILlie :)

System Files - was "Full Disclosure"
badderzboy replied to hrothgar's topic in General BBO Discussion
Hi all, One of the answers to standardisation is to agree on a text or convention card and use that as the baseline for each system. In terms of conventions then perhaps the set on www.annam.co.uk or bridgeguys is the baseline version and obviously open to discussion. EG the English Bridge Union has a PDF on Standard English Acol which details the system and the initial continuations with opener's / responders hand and as such may be the appropriate text on Standard English. It is not the form of Acol I play and it has some interesting bids like Baron 2♠ over 2NT showing a raise to 2NT or balanced 18+ no 4 card major! where slam in minor poss 4-4 but if thats the baseline so be it! You can always create addendums to merge in like Benji Acol 2 bids and 4 way transfers. The tool already sets the no. of cards expected so the rest of the text needs to be Point range or Min/Max etc - there is a danger of overkill in the explanation should ACOL 1♥ be 4+ Hearts 11*-19 points may be 4 if 4 spades and 4432 balanced 15+ or 4144 any pt count may be less than 11HCP if meets rule of 20. or 4+ Hearts 11*-19 points ? Final thought is there any way to put dummy/comment lines into the .BSS files? Steve -
I seem to be having a little trouble with 1.0.6. After closing and re-opening the application the newly input bids are not displaying whilst they are in the .BSS file. I have noticed that the definition is now appearing in the viewer for each bid and in the .BSS file in {} brackets for each step bid. eg. 001C{Std English ACOL }P1D{Std English ACOL }P1H{Std English ACOL }P2C=NYYYYYY0386-9 HCP Preference I have a backup so not toooo worried but is it just me? Pt2 - took out the spurious {} and re-installed and now seems ok maybe just a dodgy install Thanks Steve

Hrothgar, The easiest way currently is to open the file in a text editor and delete the relevant line Steve

Fred, How likely is the file format to change? Also when putting a team together it may also be worth people putting together a set of common conventions to allow people to merge them in. Eg for Std Acol I created a Benji merge in for the 2 bids now you need a merge in for Ogust or Feature asking 2NT and so on. Things like Jacoby 2NT would be interesting - so many variants but sites like www.annam.co.uk have a reasonable set of common conventions we could adopt as a baseline version of each common convention people could generate? Steve

Hi Fred, Just been looking at the Viewer side in 1.0.4, Couple of things I've observed. If you go into Viewer - Show System Summary stays over the 4♣/4♦ bid if you define that far? and obscures them and you can't select it (it highlights but no action) only the bids underneath. When you drill into a bid there is no 'return' or cancel button so you have to drill into the bid and select 'cancel & up' to go back. If you select a particular dealer position in the viewer it does not default to the standard 'any' view if no particular dealer specfic bids are defined. Also, unrelated to 1.0.4 but when you merge a file in it overwrites the system definition with the new one can this be optional(tick-box perhaps) so people can merge in conventions w'out over-writing their base system? Finally a suggestion which may be easier said than done is to be able to click into the bidding boxes to rollback to that point and to add in opps biddings etc rather than use the constructive and we-open options to get to the right place ? Will keep playing with it Cheers Steve

Can't be to play lol, I would guess pick ♦ or ♥ like sandwich NT at the one-level. The bidding suggests a mad hand 7♣ in one hand 7 ♠ in another I guess ptr has a 55 or better hand in ♦ or ♠s Steve

trying to understand
badderzboy replied to sceptic's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Hi Wayne, Not really, the better players will tend to win a tournament but there is also some element of luck involved if the quality of the field isnt uniform or people are playing different systems. For example, you face the weak pair on the 'easy' hands where 10 tricks come home and no chance of an 11th vs a swingy type hand where you tend to get a good result against a weaker pair. Also you find the odd hand suitable to a certain system will produce a swing board against that pair. A typical example is an ACOL pair playing on BBO you get a lot of swingy results anti-field when you open weak NT. Now if everyone was equally good with the same bidding judgement playing the same system then the person who makes the right guesses wins eg two way finesse or AKJxx vs xxxx - drop or finesse etc... Steve -
One small thing, I've been playing around and there is a minor issue when the opps open say 1♣ artificial where 2♣ is now a natural bid and vice-versa where 1♣ opener is natural and so 2♣ is artificial - any thoughts on how to include this in Full Disclosure? as you can't enter it as both artificial/natural :) Hopefully a useful small tip as well - I was playing with the defence to 1NT - if you play the same defence to 1NT-? as 1NT-P-P-? then save the file after compiliing your defence and then use Notepad to copy and paste your bids and then add PP in each copied line after 1NT in the textline so *001NTD... becomes *001NTPPD for example and so on... Also if you have any lines partially filled in you wish to remove it is easier to use Notepad to delete the full erroneous line then have then appear as blanks? Steve

I quite like the name 'Bidding-Tree' sums it all up in two words. Would it be possible to make the window a tad bigger both length and width ( about 10% more?) so we can see the full description? Will there be a section for carding and leads etc? When we can use this in BBO in partnership bidding / play etc it will possibly be one of the best teaching tools available (alongside LTPB/LTPB2 ;) )! Steve.

This seems incredibly powerful, Is it worth co-ordinating our efforts to define the 'normal' systems and conventions like stayman/tfrs etc then it becomes a menu for people to choose and build their system card using the merge facility. Fred, have you thought of creating a web-page in Bridgebase where standard cards can be downloaded ? I've created a 2NT puppet Stayman card and OGUST card for example and will draw up a standard English card (based on EBU)with the typical opening bids and typical initial responses and a Benji ACOL card for starters B) Steve

My rule of thumb, Also r u playing better minor? 0-4 Pass almost definitely unless I have a 6+ suit OR a void in the bid suit and I can tolerate the next bid somewhere . 5 A good 5pt hand - shape with expectation of a fit somewhere I'd bid 6+ I must bid! Remember partner expects you to have up to 19ish points so if you bid with 23+ points there is a reasonable chance they'll pass 17/3 = 5.6666 Not the end of the world if partner passes as you may get the opp to bid again - people hate leaving 1-level contracts lol. The reason is discipline in your bidding , the Hog's comment with 19 points opener is bidding game over a response! far worse with 0 zero pts playing 4H-3 or 3NT -4 etc than 1C=! Steve -
Hi Wayne, I do  as does Ron A & John C - rather than get into the relative merits of feature asking vs Ogust - I find Ogust much easier . Steve

accept invitations
badderzboy replied to sceptic's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Yes I would always accept - imagine you refuse and 3 makes - you have an unhappy partner alternatively you bid it and go off - they asked  you had a max... Did you think of bidding 3♠ and the way showing 3 of them - you still only make 9 I think with a loser in each suit? Steve -

Think before you play

Hmmm , bound to be wrong lol but.. Steve -
My humble opinion... 1/. the 2 diamond overcall Pushy but u pays your money 2/. the x of 2 diamond (what can or should it mean) i.e. stolen x or anything else Hmm I play it as penalty with 2NT showing a limit raise not necessarily including a stop but ok. Not a bad hand for Leb I suspect with dbl penalty... 3/. the lead J spades and why you think it is good or bad Don't like it we know West doesn't like Hearts so attack East's holding Lead 5♥ and partner can place every ♥! - we can signal for Diamonds v.soon we get 4 Hearts tricks virtually off the top b4 opps can set up some ♣s (ptrs holding gives us 2...! 4/. the final x Damn right swat them pesky opps ...

Quick question what is West's NT range... We know about the 4♠ and 4+♦s in West hand but if he is 4-2-4-3 or 4-3-4-2 it might be handy to know or eliminate these shapes... My solution is to delay the Club/Diamond issue for as long as possible by counting out West's hand. So take the A♠ no harm done and a mild chance of an elimination and exit a high Heart from South leaving entries in the North hand If both duck ok play another but if West wins it and cashes Q Spade we win next round and play another Heart - if West follows then cash A clubs and play to dummy with another Heart so we find out the Heart distribution If West is 4-2-4+ or 4-1-4+ play for the Club Jack to drop and hold the fallback of the Finesse of Diamond Jack (Q in East) If West is 4-3-4+ then he has at most two clubs so play for the J to be in East and finesse the 8 after cashing A♣. Probably wrong... Steve Steve

[hv=d=w&v=b&n=skqxxhdxxcakqxxxx&s=saj10xhq5432dxxxcx]133|200|Scoring: MP[/hv] West opens 1♦ and North Doubles (1) What do u bid as South - would 2♦ show 2 places to play? (2) I bid 2♥ then after partner bids 3♣ what do u bid? (3) I bid 3♦ forcing ( asking for stop more info)... Should I bid 3♠?, Should Partner bid 3♠ and should it be natural? 5♣ makes but so does 4♠+1... Steve PS For info West had 4♦ and 5♥'s so everyone else 'should' have found their spade fit grrrrr as they would open 1♥...
-
Now assuming opp who bid 4♥ must have A or K ♦'s most likely the A and have something like [hv=s=s543hkqj109876dac2]133|100|[/hv] for his bid, we're getting three tricks for 800 then ptr has [hv=s=s543hkqj109876dac2]133|100|[/hv] which suggests we can make 6♦ for 920. I'd try 6♦ and when opp has rubbish just grin and bear it! Steve

How do u bid this hand?
badderzboy replied to badderzboy's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Hmm, Should the dbl promise tolerance for any unbid suit or a v.strong hand in a sinlge suit (likely ♦) and if partner has 2♥ even he must have ♠'s so we have a dbl fit? If we go slowly will opps find a minor suit game / sacrifice? Steve
