To set the record straight here: - Australia came 3rd in the 1971 and 1979 Bermuda Bowls - Australia came 4th in the 1989 Bowl, Marston Burgess were playing a system where 2C was 0-6, any. - M-B came 3rd in the 1986 World open Pairs. I can ask PM but I doubt they were playing a strong pass system. - Fiona Brown came 4th in the World Mixed Pairs in 2006. As far as I am aware these are the only signifcant results by Australia in World Championships, plus a couple of Youth medals at the world level. nickf sydney

1a) I dont think so, but I assume 3C was forcing to 3H only. 1b) same 2) I'll bid 6H 3a) Pass on the basis I dont believe we have established ownership of the hand 3b) same nickf sydney

Within the frame work of a standard system, what's contemporary expert thought on the requirements for fourth seat: - 2 level openings (not including 2C), when in 1st-3rd seat they would be some sort of weak hand (say any of the one and 2-suited varieties)? - 3 level openings? - 4 minor openings? nickf sydney

[hv=d=s&v=n&n=skjhajt32dqj98ck2&s=sa972hk8dk32caj43]133|200|Scoring: MP[/hv] Your idiot partner (me) puts you in 6NT. Opps lead the ♣6, East plays the queen. Plan the play. However, you will discover: - When you play the ♥K East will play the 9 - the spade finesse, if you take it, works. - West has the diamond Ace but the Ten does not appear on the first two rounds. Essentially, what's the premium line? nickf sydney IL

How about sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health for starters? Oh and I forgot to add: Brought peace. nickf sydney

Yes, it's deplorable but not really a huge debate. Some minion in the Dept of Immigration made that decision but as soon as the Health Minister found out it was expected to be overturned. nickf sydney

I know for a fact that the # 1 selling bridge book for the past decade has been 25 Bridge Conventions You Should Know - it has sold 10,000 copies every year for the past ten years. That's an extraordinary figure for most books, except the well known perennials. As for others, depends on the market. But I can confidently say that writing a bridge book is not a path to riches. nickf sydney

[hv=d=n&v=e&s=sa42ha42d73caq832]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Partner deals and opens 1D (natural, strong NT system), RHO overcalls 4H. Your call? nickf sydney

Australia didnt prepare themselves properly for this series. If you watched day two, the only bowler they had in their squad who was turning the ball was part-timer Katich. It's the sub-continent factor too. The pitches are prepared to suit Indian teams (not a gripe by the way). But the contention that the English will regain the Ashes this summer - ha. Let's wait and see. nickf sydney

What happened to USA team?
nickf replied to flytoox's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I disagree that the cutoff was too low (8 teams out of 74). In fact the whole event was overswissed as it was - I dont know the exact formula but to fairly determine a winner in a Swiss the number of rounds you need is something like: - the square root of the number of Teams plus 1 With 74 teams I suppose that means about 9 rounds is sufficient to fairly find a winner. I'd have thought that if the top 8 teams cant sort themselves out after twice that many rounds then they probably dont deserve to be in the top 8. Either that or they were unlucky. nickf sydney -
If you were the last person on Earth why would you make your bed? Why wouldnt you just go down to the nearest Ikea and loot it? nickf sydney

ref: WMSG site Bridge is a game among four people with each two play in a pair work. A contract is decided during the first phase, called the auction. Then the second phase involves the play of the cards, and is based on information gained, together with the probabilities of card distribution. After finishing one round, the two pairs change their cards and play again with the opponent’s cards, in which way no luck is involved. Bridge is a kind of game which needs the ability of techniques and judgments, and is called a real mind sport. Bridge provides the efficient brain exercises, including the ability of calculation and data calculation as well as the improvement of people’s memory. Tacit understanding between partners plays an important role during playing. Therefore, bridge is a game in which communication and friendly cooperation counts. nickf sydney

[hv=n=sakxhqxxdatca8xxx&s=sxxxhakxdqxxxckxx]133|200|Scoring: IMP[/hv] You're in 3NT after an uncontested auction and the lead is the CQ, RHO showing out. What's the percentage line in diamonds for your 9th trick? nickf sydney

I think they should be forced to attend the Victory Dinner with t-shirts bearing the slogan "I voted for Angela Merkel". nickf sydney

RHO deals and opens 1D in some Polish Club variant system which is 10-12 balanced. You hold [hv=d=e&v=n&s=sakxxhqxxdkxxxcqx]133|100|Scoring: Swiss Pairs[/hv]. Your call? nickf sydney

I agree that 2C is so far off the radar map that it's on another planet. At the table I weighed up the five options: - Pass - X - 1S - 1NT - 2C and quickly removed 2C as a viable option, then X. At this stage I had a brain implosion and stopped assessing the other 3 when I realised Pass could buy me a chance to X hearts later. So I passed and a few seconds later was on lead to 1D. Damn. Ultimately, however, I think I was right and rank the options Pass, 1S, 1NT, X, 2C with 2C being just about never. nickf sydney

I butchered this last night, what's your call? Pd dealt and passed, RHO opens 1D. [hv=d=n&v=n&s=sak96hadkq9cqt872]133|100|Scoring: Teams[/hv] Over to you. nickf sydney

Last night my pd sprung this 2C opener on me (12-14NT, 5443) nil, MP AKQxx Q QJxx AKx I probably lean towards those that think it's a bit filthy for 2C but pd whose opinion I respect argued at the time that he hated the thought of jump shifting to 3D over a possible 1NT response from me. Who's for 1S or who is for 2C? nickf sydney
