quick opening poll
ardf10987 replied to gwnn's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Just because everyone love 4♣, let's me speak about a different point of view. 1) Obviously I'm not sure how points are divided, but it's more normal (I presume) they will be (near) 11-11-11. So normally "someone" have a partial to play. Not game. 2) Why they shoud pay 1100? Let's think about a more normal 2 off 3) Why p should double? Yes..he will double with a stack of trumps... but it's a correct hope? 4) Opening 4♣ make impossible for us to play 3NT (Lapalice dixit) No..No... I'm not hoping to play in ♥, because my idea is to open 3♣... my bet is for a normal and ordinary 3NT... yes...yes... this is the reason I'm lacking kibitzer when I play... B) -
How many hearts - and what is your bid?
ardf10987 replied to Helmer's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I think p it's simply informing you about a good lead. Sometime you have ♠ AJ109x... and not ♠AK10xx I don't think at all about HOW MANY... but about HOW STRONG are his ♥. Sometime 3♥ are bid with AQJ... think about something like ♠xxx ♥AQJ ♦xx ♣xxxxx. I think this would be an acceptable exemple... okok... I hope... -
1♣ dbl... often dbl means majors... so I see no reason to bid now 4♥, also admitting this to be a near normal bid. I prefer dbl + 3♥... just in case we can find some others contracts... - such as 3NT (why not? ♠Kxx ♥x ♦Kxx ♣AKJxxx), - such as 5♣ (♠xxx ♥ x ♦Kxx ♣AKJxxx) or, dreaming beautiffuly, - such as 6 ♣ with some slight variations (♠Axx ♥x ♦Kxx ♣ARJxxx). And don't tell me with last hand you would have bid 3♣ in complete misfit... Yes I know... some leads can beat us... but nobody is perfect... specifically me, finding correct examples... :)

To (cue)bid or not to (cue)bid
ardf10987 replied to ardf10987's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Just to give you, as usual and for history, the result. Very very very strong p happened to have opposite: [hv=d=w&v=n&n=sk832ha1097642d3ca&s=saj764hj5dj7652c2]133|200|Scoring: MP West Nord East South 1♣.....1♥....2♥....pas 2NT...3♣...3NT...?[/hv] So for him I SHOULD HAVE BID 4♣ (pretending to play his second suit), and he would have bid 4♥, so showing 6♥ and 4♠... Just now one thing is sure for me... I understand why I rarely play with very very very strong people... -
I'll lead a hearts. To bid this way ♥ are probably AKQxxx... for 2/3 small. They have probably all 4 aces and 3 kings, and this means 11 tricks... Only hope is some useful ♦ holding from partner... but we must not blow the 12° trick immediatly...
-
Playing with a very strong partner... very very very strong (just in case he is reading here...), as South you face this bidding problem: [hv=d=w&v=n&s=saj764hj5dj7652c2]133|100|Scoring: MP West Nord East South 1♣.....1♥....2♥....pas 2NT...3♣...3NT...?[/hv] You can suppose playing against SAYC... What's 3♣ ? You can obviously write answering all meaning you use in Nord for DBL, 3♣, 3♦, etc. BUT pools remains as stated. I obviously picked fourth answer...

I'll lead a spade. I don't lead a colour they already know. I don't lead trump with a singleton. I don't lead an ace. yes... I agree last lead can be fine... with one ♦ and a trump trick to make. This CAN happens, but I think it's rare... There are TWO factors to match... Hoping K♠ in front is mine (simple) choice...

Bidding 3♦, for all, is a massive underbid. Bidding 3♣, for someone, is correct, but I dislike bidding colours I don't have. Bidding 2♠ "out of tempo" would be fine. Partner will surely find a way to interpose some bid other then 4♠ with a 45 majors...Okok...I was jocking... but... Bidding 2♠ "in tempo" is unbeliavable. You can change it in incredible. And p is favorite to be 44 or 54 in M. What else we have? I have no tools to bid this hand (after 1♦ opening), so I MUST be creative. And my choice is... 4♦. I understand this show 6♦ 4♥, but I hope to make some jump to 6♦, just to show solid ♦. If 4♦ this way is forbidden, I'll choose 4♣ (splinter), with same hope. It's a little bet, hoping to find a useful ♥ suit in front. I know. But I found best showing 9 correct card (on 10) that showing 1 correct card (on 4+ supposed, with 3♣).

Restricted choice
ardf10987 replied to ardf10987's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Okok... I'll give you the entire hand, just and only for history. [hv=d=s&v=n&n=sq7653hq875d7cq105&w=s4hak1064dkq1083c76&e=sj1082hj3dj95ckj83&s=sak9h92da642ca942]399|300|Scoring: MP[/hv] After 1NT (2♦) X (pas)... my p opted to pass and we collect 2♦ x +1. 2♠ in this hand would have been fine. Till now I don't know why 2♦ (not alerted) was bid with a red 5/5... but our problem here was not their bidding style... -
Restricted choice
ardf10987 replied to ardf10987's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Playing t/o dbl doesn't garantee founding best fit. When ops open 4♦ and we are 5♠-4♥ with some points we dbl... we dbl and hope... Sometime p has 4+ cards M (which is fine)... sometime he has 3-3 and we will play our worst M. But bidding 4♠ over 4♦ is by no means better, because it's easy to find others hands when our p will have 2♠ and 4+♥... or would have passed the dbl with a ♦ stack. But in the long run p will bid some colours we have... and anyway, in the worst situation, HE will go down... :) -
Restricted choice
ardf10987 replied to ardf10987's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Thanks all for you help, also if contrary to my feelings on this matter... :) Why I think dbl is a better choice? Simply... a ) when we have a stack in their colour, we can anyway play 3NT (so any loss is a "differential loss", often near marginal) b ) when we have a t/o dbl, we will play our best colour and, sometime, even a game opposite no point in ♦. This is particolary true when we open 1NT with possible 5 cards M. I'm sure you would NOT like to play 2♠ opposite Ax RF10xx xxx ARx... Anyway I must some excuse to my occasional p, because I thought dbl as t/o was the expert meaning, and I was wrong. It happens... rarely neh? -
Unknow, but EXPERT partner... after this start 1NT (2♦)... you have [hv=d=s&v=n&s=sq7653hq875d7cq105]133|100|Scoring: MP [/hv] What's your bid over natural ops 2♦?

punish/save/bid to make/pass
ardf10987 replied to matmat's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
If you pass and lead an ♥, I think they'll probably make it calling director... Apparently it's not your lead.. :P -
I don't think you can take more then one option, voting. But you can list them writing... Added P.S. I asked some strong player the meaning of 2♠. Pls note it was only one opinion (I don't know too much strong players, apparently...). :( He confirmed me it shows (in his system, anyway) a strong one-suiter... I now fear asking someone else...

Pass with an 8 card suit
ardf10987 replied to jtfanclub's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
May be I'm alone in this raisoning... but... when I bid, normally, it to make (or hoping to make) a game. If I bid 3♥, does really p will give me four with stiff Q♥ and AQ♠? Or with A♥ and another ace? Now suppose I bid 4♥ beeing wrong (as usual). What I will pay? - 300? If they have game, it' fine - 500? If they have game, it depends from scoring... - My p will skyrocket me in a slam? Well... I have a lot of tricks facing aces... and... I always find Q♥ :P Okok... honestly... at the end, I'll probably bid 3♥ me too... But I'll admire all 4♥ bidders...
