  1. Today (5/17), playing hands with the GIBS, i am unable to see scores of others who played the hand if i use Matchpoint as a table option. In the past, i've always been able to see other scores when using Matchpoint. As a test, I changed the table option to IMPs. I was able to see the results for others who played the same hand. I tried setting up a Matchpoint table at different times during the day but still had the same problem. Any idea on what's gone wrong? Thanks Sue
  2. Is there a way to make preset hands off line and then load them into partnership bidding? My partner and I (both beginners) play f2f at a local club. We'd like to review problem hands from our f2f play at BBO Partnership Bidding if there's a way to reproduce those hands using BBO software. Thanks Sue
  3. I hosted a table at BIL. I set the table up for my partner and me playing against the GIBs. Both the UNDO and REDEAL options were not available (toggled off). I could find no way to toggled them on or to select that option when I started the table. Anyone know what i need to do to get those options available? Sue
  4. When I view the traveller after playing a hand, am I seeing scores from only the club where I am playing? For instance, if I'm playing in BIL are the scores on the traveller showing only those played by members at BIL? Or might the traveller show players from other club areas of BBO? Thanks, Sue
  5. Advancing beginner playing a very simple SAYC. I'm always uncertain what to open with a 6-5 distribution. In the following hand, do I open the longer clubs or the spades? I know that if both suits were equal length I'd bid the higher ranking. AQ1098 106 --- A85432 Would the bidding be different with higher point count so I'd be making a reverse? Such as: AK1098 K6 --- AJ5432 Thanks Sue
  6. Thanks....that did the trick. Sue
  7. Been a few weeks since I've been on BBO. Logged on today and something seems amiss. There are 777 tables in use in the main club BUT only 4 tables are displayed for me. I find it hard to believe that 773 tables decided to go "invisible." I don't recall changing any of my settings yet think something's obviously not right. Would appreciate any help. Sue
  8. New to bridge and to SAYC. Play with beginners at local club and on BBO. I understand standard opening bids in a minor -- diamonds if 4/4 and clubs if 3/3 when no 5 card major available and the better minor in a hand such as KJ83 AQ72 874 K4. Problem is, I like the idea of the short club bid -- bidding 1 club instead of the better minor -- since it leaves only the one minor with any possible ambiguity. My beginner husband and I are using this when we play together. I've not gotten any other beginner partners to consider it since they were taught to bid the better minor and uncertain about deviating from that. My question is, other than hoping my partner remembers to alert this short club bid, are there other disadvantages to using it? I wonder if there's problems with the bid I don't realize since it is not the standard bid. Thanks in advance for any help on this beginner topic. Sue
  9. This bridge beginner sat in on a terrific teaching session at BIL by "athene" (William Frisby) on Declarer play. Later, when I tried to open the movie to review the lesson all I had was a blank vugraph screen. I have the chat log but no hands to review. Where'd the hands go? Also, during the session, I could click the screen and view the "lesson txt." But there was no way to save that or to print the "lesson.txt" during the session. Thanks for any help, Sue
  10. Thanks...exactly what I was looking for.... Sue
  11. Is there a way to log the traveler score sheet (or log) along with the movie of the hand played. Might be useful to this beginner when reviewing the movie of hands I've played to see what others bid on the same hand. I can log chat and log the hand but lose the traveler. Sue
  12. North: K J 9 8 6 A K 8 7 5 A K 3 South: A Q 4 7 6 5 A Q 9 2 J 5 4 This bidding problem is from a Frank Stewart bridge column. The bidding question was simple. South "opens one diamond, next player passes. What do you say?" A jump shift of "2 Spades then support the diamonds next" is the answer. He goes on to say that if partner holds a minimum hand such as seen in South above "you can make 7 diamonds." Using SAYC, I'm assuming South would bid 2NT with North supporting Diamonds with a 3 Diamond bid. But after that, I'm don't know how each partner would bid to get to a final contract of 7 Diamonds. Would blackwood be used? Control showing Cue bids? Thanks in advance, SueW
  13. I'm trying to figure out the colors used to highlight players names in lounge and BIL club. I know Grey means the person will be right back. What does RED mean? How 'bout WHITE? Thanks WSue
  14. Can someone tell this BBO beginner (and bridge beginner) what's the difference between Basic SAYC and Full SAYC? I notice "basic" and "full" used in many BBO player profiles but don't know what conventions would change basic to full. I'm studying Fred Gitelman's SAYC beginner tutorial downloadable at ACBL. I've also printed out the "ACBL Standard Yellow Card Booklet" from the ACBL site. Only difference between the two is Fred doesn't introduce Jacoby 2NT and the Booklet includes it as a typical SAYC response. I had assumed if I learned the conventions in the ACBL Booklet I could claim I play SAYC. Sue
  15. Thanks Roland....Very clear explanation. A good exercise for me to attempt to reason out these problems and then learn where my reasoning goes askew--in this case poor arithmetic :) 18 - 21 pts plus my meager 5 HCP does present game possibilities!
  16. Beginner here (studying Fred Gitelman's BB tutorial) but I'd like to take a stab....and learn from any kindly critiques on my approach... I wonder if partner should just pass your diamond bid? 1. Partner already showed a poor hand after your dbl by bidding his "best" suit at lowest possible level (showing zero to 7 pts and promising no more than 4 spades). 2. Partner could not bid 2NT after your diamonds since couldn't promise a heart stopper. 3. I wouldn't want to rebid Spades--might be thought as 6 card length. 4. I would have understood your diamond bid as forcing and showing pt strength (18 or more). I would expect diamonds to be your best suit but possibly only 4 diamonds. 5. BUT "you can't get blood from a turnip." I have 3 diamond support and have already shown my poor point count. Not wanting to make matters worse, I would pass. Sue
  17. Thanks....found it. Sue
  18. My profile page indicates a chat log exists. Does this log chat during play or only chat at a chat board? and How do I call up the chat log? Thanks Sue
  19. This beginner took the advise given here and started joining in BIL games. Yikes...Oh, the embarrassing mistakes I'm making!!! But have received only patience and friendliness at BIL. Yesterday I was deaf to partner's transfer after my 1NT bid, remained confused thru the whole bidding, and stuck my partner with a really nasty mess. And not one frustrated word from partner! I announce myself as a beginner when I sit. And after two or three hands I leave, feeling I've tortured my partner long enough. I assume it's a big no-no to ask a partner the meaning of a bid during the auction, right? I must say, being able to review the session via vugraph movie is a fantastic learning tool--that's when I realized partner's transfer. Just hope I'll learn quickly before folks avoid me like the plague <_< Sue
  20. I've been studying Fred's excellent on-line tutorial. If you are familiar with this tutorial you know it is a sort of "bare bones" SAYC. It does not introduce transfers, michael's, or jacoby 2Nt. I like it that way. Gives the beginner the opportunity to practice some good bridge without too many bells and whistles. I've been observing BBO games (have yet to have the courage to sit at a table). Beginners and Novices include tons of conventions in their profiles. I've yet to jump into these games. I have enough trouble remembering to bid Stayman. Can't possibly, nor do I care to at this time, learn all the advanced conventions of SAYC. Wondering if BBO might set up a "club" for those learning Fred's tutorial. Students could play at "Fred's Club," practice his lessons, not be burdened with so many advanced conventions, could discuss what they think they understand from the on-line tutorial, etc. Sue
  21. I've been studying this tutorial. How bout you? I've yet to find the courage to jump into any bbo games. BUT would feel comfortable playing with others that are also learning from this tutorial. Perhaps there's a way for nervous beginners like me to get together at a table and practice Fred's lessons. Anybody interested? I'm at Eastern Standard Time--I figure that will be important when scheduling. SueW
  22. I was never taught this concept when I first learned to play. I doubt the ladies from the rubber bridge group that taught me knew about it either. I recently decided to re-learn the game after a very long absense from the game and this cornerstone of bridge -- limited range and captaincy -- was the first thing I "discovered" from the books and on line tutorials I used for study. Bong! The Lightbulb Lit! I now realize there is no partnership communication without an understanding of this concept. BUT, I am now playing rubber bridge again and find the concept is still unknown. Bidding either goes on forever until one partner gets so confused he/she passes OR the bid ends at 2 diamonds with 35 pts between the two hands. Very, very frustrating... I made the mistake of trying to "teach" this concept. Eyes glazed over. But everyone was interested in learning Transfers. I am no expert. One still needs to play skillfully (which I'm still studying) even in the best contract. BUT at least the concept of limited range and captaincy gets the partnership to an appropriate contract. I'm curious.... Why/ How does this concept get lost? Sue
  23. Thanks for your suggestions. I hope to try them this weekend. Sue
