  1. Declarer played a club from hand and asked dummy to play a spade even though there were still clubs to play. Dummy was the only one who noticed and pointed out the situation to declarer. One of the defenders objected that dummy shouldn't draw attention to an irregularity. Is this correct? If so what should happen (should the card be changed?)and how should dummy be penalised?
  2. Thanks Aberlour. Well done everyone. Looking forward to Euro 2012.
  3. I'm a lurker. I feel I have learned a huge amount from reading posts, but I don't have a lot to contribute. I do admire people like Jillybean who ask the kind of questions I'm afraid to ask.

  7. [hv=n=skq109hdc&s=s87632hdc]133|200|[/hv] You play small to the King, losing to the Ace. When you play small towards the Queen, LHO plays low. Should you finesse now? Also, if like me you don't know, how should you work it out at the table?
  8. I thought that playing 2♥ as "catch-all" meant a hand not suitable to bid a new suit, raise partner or bid NT. This hand can rebid NT comfortably (for me 12-14 or 18-19). If you don't open 1NT with a 5cM then you have to do it differently I suppose. I've no idea what is standard as I live in Acol land.
  9. Interesting - 10 replies, 5 say take out, 5 penalties. I thought it was penalties and had to go back to team mates with -1070. Probably partner shouldn't have bid it and I should have taken it out just in case.
  10. LHO opens 1♥, partner overcalls 1NT. RHO bids 2♦. LHO bids 2♥ and partner dbles. Is this take out or penalty? (1♥) - 1NT - (2♦) - PASS (2♥) - X Opps are vul, imps.

    Ruling?

At the table, the director didn't even ask how the defence was played, he just assumed that any defence that let 4♥ make was inferior. This certainly seems tough on NS.

    Ruling?

"( If, subsequent to the irregularity, the non-offending side has contributed to its own damage by a serious error (unrelated to the infraction) or by wild or gambling action it does not receive relief in the adjustment for such part of the damage as is self-inflicted. The offending side should be awarded the score that it would have been allotted as the consequence of its infraction only." This Law does seem to explain the ruling. However it does seem a bit harsh that NS have to defend against a contract that the opps weren't able to bid properly.

    Ruling?

This was a teams competition. The ruling given was that EW got -110 (3♦ making) but NS got -620 as they were not damaged by the bidding but by their own "inferior" play. The score for EW seems fairly straightforward but I thought the NS score was unusual. How bad does your defence have to be before you get a ruling like this?

    Ruling?

[hv=d=s&v=b&n=s5hqj64dj432c9876&w=saqt4hak73dkcaj43&e=sk32ht9852d875ct2&s=sj9876hdaqt96ckq5]399|300|Scoring: IMP [/hv] South opened 1♦, West Doubled and North raised to 2♦. East passed and South bid 3♦. West paused before passing and East bid 3♥ which West raised to 4♥. West's hesitation was agreed by EW. 4♥ made on poor defence and the director was called. What should the ruling be?
  15. My wife had the hand recently. She was playing a weak no trump and was worried that her partner had a strong no trump hand and would be shut out of the bidding (which was indeed the case). She doubled and her partner bid 3NT holding ♦765. This did not work out well. 3♦ needed a Spade lead to beat it and 4♥ normally made. I thought double was a bit much, but I had some sympathy with it - I agree it would be a lot better if the ♦A was ♥A.
  16. [hv=d=s&v=b&s=sj932h87dacq96532]133|100|Scoring: Total Points[/hv] 1♥ - (3♦) - ? Is it ok to double with this? thanks Allan
  17. I don't think he should take a card from his hand before it is his turn to play. However I would have thought he can play whatever he likes.
  18. For me it promises 4♥ and tends to have tolerance for ♦ - otherwise support for ♣
  19. Not an "obvious" opening for me but I think I'd bid 1♠ as I suspect that we've got a spade fit and opponents have a heart fit. If I don't bid spades first partner will not believe I have 5.
