Hello! Last weekend I was playing in the league. We start after 5 hours in train at 13:00 and the last hand is over around 00:30 (not really important...), we play with screens. The last segment of the day had begun, on my side of the screen everything was fine (I had a goodlooking nice opp, our mood was very relaxed :D ). Suddenly my partner looked over the screen and asked my opp "Is your partner sick?" I heard before that on the other side was sth. going on but didn't care - focussing on the hands is not easy for me when it is late, I needed already all my energy. I wondered if my partner meant "sick" = stupid or "sick" = ill, all is possible as I learnt during my bridge career :D. Opp said "Yes, he is". In the meantime the sick man had left, TD came and told us that a doctor (another league player) was taking care because the poor guy had collapsed because of an allergic reaction! After some minutes poor opp returned and the match went on. I always catch all vibrations and I felt it won't be ok with him, we played on but my senses were on the other screen side. My screen opp played very well, it was possible but hard to defeat his contract but I failed. One good board followed and another bad one for us. Suddenly my p said:"He is lying on the ground!" Now the playing at our table definitely stopped and we took care of the poor guy (I made a foot massage, brought water etc.). Time ran out and we could not play 5 boards (--> 5 x 3 IMPs for us), no substitute was there. ALL went out for comparing the scores, except me, I was busy, things became worse and I scared and I asked a waiter to call an ambulance. 5 minutes later the night portier came back with a telefone, I should call myself. Huh??? When I was talking to the man on the line I got an idea why: he was very unkind and talked like a boss teacher. The portier said that they do not even send the ambulance when someone of the hotel staff calls! After 30 minutes and a bucket full of §$%&/ (opp had become green) the ambulance arrived. Happy end: next morning the player was back from hospital, looking MUCH better :D Isn't bridge exciting? The only thing I must work harder on is to keep concentration, no matter if a landslide ruins half the hotel, a wife murders her husband at the neighbour table because he misplayed the hand, a handfull of male strip dancers perform around our table, Santa Claus himself is TD, or what other minor things may happen.... Caren PS: that was not all that happened, I am looking forward to play the last 3 matches in april :) PPS: Luis, what about writing a book together?

Chapter 2 :) Hi all! Always those decisions.... [hv=d=w&v=b&s=s1097hkq85dk1064ck6]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv]You face strong opps and the bidding is: (1NT = 15-17) 2♦! = any long major (2NT! = Lebensohl) ??? --> p.o.c.?? If you decide to pass, it goes on (3♣!) 3♠ (pass) ??? My questions: 1. a.) What does partner promise with 2♦ (HCP, tricks, ...)? b.) And then with 3♠? 2. In general: a.) What is a minimum 4th hand for bidding a constructive game in such an auction when a 15-17 NT had been opened? b.) What are the pros and cons for this decision (a pro imo is for example if p can reach my hand for finesses)? Thx! Caren

--> Dopo 4♥ 4♠ e finito, solo 1 down ;) P ha sbagliato, come sempre. Ora meglio?
-
When you are somewhat scared (feeling ;) ) and want to learn more about partner's hand, bidding 1♠ might be another option. Partner will only pass with 0-4 and that must not necessarily end the auction or be bad. Otoh: when you have a system bid just bid it  Others open this hand already with 2NT, so you are "with the field". Or?

Hi! I know I interrupt a bit the process here but I would like to say that I really, really ♥love♥ this thread! The various ways of thinking and working out what is going on without complicated conventional stuff are very interesting. After the last BBP I did not dare to express myself here but I found my solution :) I hope for more of this! Fred, can I get an autograph in Verona? Perhaps I will wear a fan t-shirt :D Caren

We've got the rulebooks in the club, and I've got them at home as well, I was just being too lazy to look it all up :-). Usually other people in the club care about such decisions... Anyway this is an interesting case that could be used in a TD examination as well, probably :-). --Sigi lollll you were too lazy and I stepped into this trap... I thought you had a real problem and spent precious minutes trying to solve it :( To free: I think correct distribution implies also 13 cards for each player B)
-
What a mess... We have several rules that apply here: 1. German "Turnierordnung" § 12 (2) (shortened...) North has to write down the correct score, lead, distribution etc., East must control § 27 falsified board (1) the guilty pair shall get penalty points up to 50% of a topscore (5) 2 scores before detecting the falsification: - all 4 pairs get 60% (if equal score like we have here)--> has to be corrected when guilt is clear (7) - guilty pair(s) get 40% § 28 (5) (7): complicated stuff for scoring: Ave +, Ave - and how to build it because round average for the pair is important, too *sigh* Here one is VERY happy to have a validated PC score program...... 2. German "Turnier-Bridge-Regeln von 1997" § 7 B. 1. Players have to count their cards before bidding § 13 wrong number of cards A. (3) the cards were uncorrectly dealt --> new dealing C. has one player more and another player less cards after the hand was finished, the result must be cancelled --> the guilty players CAN be punished (§ 90, also § 23 Turnierordnung) § 87 falsified board B. how to score § 88 --> 60% (or their played round-average, when higher than 60%) for the pair that did not do anything wrong Which pairs are guilty? --> both pairs at table 1 because a.) 1 pair didn't count their cards, b.) N wrote down the wrong distribution and E didn't control correctly --> 1 pair at table 2 that didn't count the cards. When the distribution is written down, I don't know any E who controls this again in practise (only when it was a very interesting hand in any way), E normally only controls the score and pairnumber etc. But the rules don't say that it has not to be done, too :( 40% for all 4 might be ok... I would decide 3 times 40%, 1 time 60% The board must be redealt. The TD should give penalty points and can decide who earns most :) Sorry for my English today, it is hard to translate rules :) Caren PS: I have most of the time the rules in my bag when going to a tournament B) I am not sure but I think you can download them on the DBV-homepage

Thx all :) Very helpful again, like all the other times before. Yes, BBO rocks! And you rock B) Caren

Just returned from the psychiatrist. He said I should give up playing bridge and forget trying to understand men (3 minutes for 130 €). Before I do: I didn't really think that partner had many ♣s. What I don't understand is the message of the SPL here. Why not 4♥?
-
Responder did not bid - 2♣ = GF with ♣s which buries 4♣ as KC - 3♣ = 6 crds with 2 top honours - XX 1♦ may include 5-11 pts with a m (5-6 cards, not qualifying for a jump to 3m) Perhaps the intention of responder is to put as much pressure as possible on opps because the ♠s must be somewhere and 4♠ is down :P I listen to my inner voice and pass. But I did not yet talk to my psychiatrist... And it is really late...

This discussion is very useful! Nobody here would dbl instead of bidding 2♣ with the S hand? One of my friends would and in his opinion the bidding would go on: pass pass 1♥ dbl pass 2♣ pass 2♥ pass 2NT pass 3♠ pass 5♣ end. Since 2♣ shows 11 to ...hm 17 bad (??): is the 3♣ raise an invitation or just a bid to make life harder for opener? All are red. By the way: I was silly S. I must admit that I sometimes bid according to my feeling (please don't flame me for that! I still have partners that I don't pay :P ) In this case I must also admit that I didn't think until the bitter end: which honours exactly does partner really need to have that we succeed in 3NT. This imagination is a tough problem for me. Perhaps I was hoping to transmit the message: I have a maximum overcall with stoppers everywhere, are your clubs fine? Or so... I will ask my psychiatrist. Perhaps he has also a recipe (or pills) how I can get rid of wishful thinking....

Still only 8 tricks: 5♣s, 2♥s, 1♦. We are 1 tempo behind :) Well, I knew I couldn't count :( Normal for a good mathematician (I know a lot of them :D ), so don't worry! And if you must have had to count to 13 (higher mathematics), you would have been successful, I am sure! ♥
-
Ok, thx :D So what would be YOUR bid after 3♣ and why?
-
Still only 8 tricks: 5♣s, 2♥s, 1♦. We are 1 tempo behind :D

Hi! This hand was no success, one must be in 5♣. How would 2 experts bid? A ♥-cuebid leads to the same disaster, which leaves 3♦ and 3♠, or? I am thankful for arguments! [hv=d=e&v=b&n=s986hk5d932ck10765&s=skqjha98dacqj9432]133|200|Scoring: IMP bidding: pass pass 1♥ 2♣ pass 3♣ pass 3NT[/hv] Caren

Hi! We meet once per week with our teammates and play DOOP: every player has his own 52 cards and a sheet with hands on. We pick out the cards for hand xy and play it then. After the session we have scores for comparison. This is better than shuffling and playing because one of us is very interested in writing down "points" to have a winner at the end of the session :D (for me it is just a training session... points - schmoints) You can imagine what happend... the arguments (not mine LOLL): - "what a weak field", - cards are in favour for only one side (NS or EW) over the session - someone decided to collect interesting hands for a session of 24 boards (*hehe* I am the only woman there, so forget about female arguments) I have some questions: A. Do you know where the hands are from (as far as I know they are from played tournaments somewhere in US. Which quality? The results are more plausible than those of my local club :P)? Did really someone pick out only interesting hands? Not that I find that bad! B. Do you perhaps know another possibility to have a f2f competition with only 4 involved players? PC is out in this case.... But I could prepare something (of course without going too deep into the hands :P ) Caren

I partially disagree. Life is a constant fight (for example have a look on all the cosmetics in a lady's bathroom... and all that just to keep the man). We need to rest at the bridgetable * :) I slowly start to understand why women and men have so many misunderstandings  We often cannot agree on the basics, we want to talk whilst they want to go hunting... * Ladies, please don't take this too serious ;) ♥♥♥ It is nice feeling to win! ♥♥♥

Hi! Short explanation about Woolsey = defence over nat. 1NT (here 15-17): - X = 2-suiter, any 4crd M + 5crd m - 2♣ = both M - 2♦ = any long M - 2♥/♠ = this 5crd M + 4crd m - 2NT = both m The confusion goes on.... What do the last bids show? 1. (1NT) X (pass) 2♥ 2. (1NT) X (pass) 2♠ 3. (1NT) X (pass) 3♦ 4. (1NT) X (pass) 2♥ DBL 5. (1NT) X (pass) 2♠ DBL 6. (1NT) X (XX) 7. (1NT) X (XX) 2♥ 8. (1NT) X (XX) 2♠ 9. (1NT) X (XX) 2♥ DBL 10. (1NT) X (XX) 2♠ DBL 11. 1NT (2-suiter-bid other than DBL) DBL 12. 1NT (2-suiter-bid other than DBL) cuebid 13. 1NT (2-suiter-bid other than DBL) suit-bid :) THX!!! Caren
