We deliberated on the proper bidding and landed on the above. I will explain our thinking: N - 1H (13+, 5H) S - 2C (GF, 3+C)...we believed that skipping 1S was acceptable since Partner had hearts support and confirming GF was more important N - 2H (6+H, nothing about points) S - 3H (16+ pts, 3H support)...with 13-15 pts, would just jump to 4H N - 4C (1st or 2nd rnd control) S - 4D (1st or 2nd rnd control) N - 4S (1st or 2nd rnd control in both hearts and spades) S - 4NT (1430) N - 5C (1 or 4) S - 7H ...must be 4 due to cuebids As mentioned it is a practice hand working through our system, hoping some experts can shed some light on if our thinking and offer suggestions for improved thinking or bidding system. Thanks in advance for the support!

  3. Hello, I played a game recently and missed a game in spades. My partner bid something I was not expecting and wanted to know some expert opinion on what the best bidding for this hand was. Appreciate the help! Question 1: On other boards, East opened with 1S. Whats the expert opinion on this? Rule of 20 does pass. Question 2: Was Wests re-bid of 2 clubs the best bid? If not, why? At another table, West raised to 2S. However I only had 3 spades and assumed the 1S response to my minor was 4 not 5? Is there a convention that I am missing that says this should have been 4? There was no overcall so negative double showing 4 vs bidding showing 5 did not apply. Thoughts? Question 3: East then jumped to 3 diamonds. Although I was not balanced, I figured our best contract may still yet have been 3NT. How could I have known East had 5 spades? Whats the expert opinion on East second bid? If I had east hand I would have jumped 3S to show 5 and a medium hand. Thoughts? Question 4: Although 3NT was down 1, what else would West have bid after that sequence. In hindsight, would 3S have meant to East: "I dont have 4 spades but I do have 3 so bid 3NT if you only have 4 spades and 4S if you have 5"? Thanks for all your help! 4. Hi All, Thank you for your analysis, this has been a great teaching for me. Not overcalling with the West hand is interesting insight. First thought I saw it as maybe general interference not likely to be doubled, worst case partner knows the strong suit for lead direction. Maybe partner has 4 hearts and 10HCP and we steal a bid for a top board? Anyone recommend further reading on why this is a poor choice to overcall?
  5. Ok, so you all have uncovered another nuance. If you ruff the heart at trick 6 and then exit a club. With a diamond lead from East you are set 1. You all are correct the most obvious play is the ruff heart. If you however follow what Cyberyeti said and ruff the heart not at trick 6 but at trick 4. The line of queen finesse does make. So, something to note, is it generally a rule to take your ruff as soon as you can rather than wait until the last trump? In this case it actually made a difference. I'd really like to see if someone knows what that 2S limit bid is as this is exactly as the team played it given the 4S jump after the limit raise. Your comments are all great. Thank you
  6. Hi All, Sorry, new to the forum :) I was playing a hand which had a few interesting things happen and wanted to see if someone could share some insight into what the bidding was and the thinking process at the critical trick which was trick 6. Question: Should West have doubled instead of bidding 1H overcall? with singleton points are 9HCP + 3 singleton. do you downgrade to 8HCP + 3 (ie not enough for X) and therefore bid your 5 card overcall? Interesting thing #1: What convention is the 2S limit raise? All the other auctions for this hand used the 2H cue bid limit raise. It appears as some sort of inverted major however I read those are typically used as an alternative to drury. Any thoughts or direction to where I can read more about this type of bidding response. Interesting thing #2: at trick 6, what does declarer lead and why? It would be best if someone who responded played it with closed hands and explained reasoning at trick 6. Double dummy makes it easy to figure out what do do next. Thanks for your help all!
