  1. Where does the 33 HCP guideline for 6NT come from? I realise that there are lots of other factors such as shape, teams vs pairs, vulnerable vs not vulnerable, the quality of the field etc. Presumably there has been some computer modelling over millions of hands to support the basic guideline. I think I read somewhere that two flat hands with 33 HCP makes just over 50% of the time on best play. Many thanks in anticipation.
  2. Can you create a deal at a teaching table, play it, and then export it as a .lin file with play? Thanks
  3. [hv=pc=n&s=s32h976dkjt9765c6&w=sq9875hkjd432ct54&n=s64ha832daq8c9873&e=sakjthqt54dcakqj2&d=s&v=n&b=15&a=2dp3ddp3sp4sppp]399|300[/hv] A pickup partner led the ♥A. Could you explain the rationale please. I ran this through Jack - Jack led the ♥A so it's obviously OK. I thought that vs a suit contract you should not lead the ace at trick 1 unless you also have the King.
  4. How do you create a document incorporating hand diagrams and separate text boxes for auction and commentary? I have seen lots of them with 4 or 8 boards per page.
  5. We have a teaching group of 'improvers'(Acol) and want to extend their use of Stayman and Transfers to include 5-4 and 5-5 major holdings. There are different schemes and differences of opinion as to which one should be recommended /taught. (We don't want to introduce any new devices such as Smolen at this stage) One scheme that Andrew Robson and others advocate for all responder hands is: Stayman with all 5-4 hands - Transfers with all 5-5 hands (except Stayman with 5-5 weak). It has a weakness in that you can't invite game with 5-4. Other schemes I have looked at have weaknesses in other areas. If you use transfers with 5-4 I don't think you can differentiate between 5-4 and 5-5 holdings.
  6. I open 1NT with 13 HCP (playing 12-14) The bidding goes (P) 2♣ (2♠) I am assuming from the overcall that partner has hearts and I have 4 hearts. I'd like to bid 3H - game invitational but what little I can find on 4th seat says I should not bid a suit at the 3 level. My choices are to pass or double for penalties. I don't understand why this is so. Would a double not normally be for takeout? We play transfers so don't play Phoney Stayman and given the spade overcall it is unlikely that partner is playing weak Stayman 5-4, so I would assume partner has 11+ HCP and a likely 8 card heart fit, and it does not feel right to pass that. Can anyone help?
  7. Everyone else played in 3♠ making 10 tricks
  8. RHO opened 2D (they play 3 weak 2s). I had 7 points and a good 6 spades (KQ10852), so not enough to overcall a preempt (strong over weak etc). Their partner raised to 2D. Turned out opener had 10 points and a 5 card diamond suit J9752 and said she had miscounted her diamonds. Everyone else made 3S+1 and we got our opponents down 1 trick, a bottom I guess it's just tough - she misled her partner as well as me, so no adjustment. Is that right?
  9. I had a situation recently where a player thought she was registered for the tournament but her computer had frozen. I got an alert from the BBO system. Eventually the player rebooted and rejoined, and the tournament started. If it had been necessary to de-register the pair then how would the system have dealt with it. Would the tournament start automatically and how would it adjust movements. movement-wise. FYI the event was set up as a +howell+ +rounds9+ but without the deregistered pair we would have changed the movement.
  10. Is there a way to create a deal, play it, save it and then play it back with only declarer and dummy hands visible. I want to make a video where I talk the viewer through the play as they would see it in practice, without the distraction of seeing the defence hands.
  11. Is thee no way you can do it using the BBO screen view? I want to make a movie where I talk my student through the play of a saved board where they are not distracted by seeing the opponents cards.
  12. Is it possible to playback a movie of a saved board with the defence hands hidden?
  13. A relative novice (no LTC) has asked whether opener can count shortage ( 5-3-1 :void-singleton-doubleton) after something like 1H-3H -?, or is it just opener, who has discovered the fit, who does so. Responder may already have counted shortage.
