There are a row of buttons. Does switching them to orange stop strangers joining a game that is in progress? Thanks

I have just joined and was host for 3 games. Twice so eone joined us and took the place of my partner and a couple of times our opponent6were replaced by robots.is there any way I can stop this happening? Maybe I'm doing something wrong when I set up the table. I will be grateful for any help. Thank you. Patricia
